Caltrain, Amtrak and ACE at Santa Clara (January 28th, 2016)

Three hours of Caltrain, Amtrak and ACE action at Santa Clara, filmed on January 28th, 2016. Santa Clara is the first station north of San Jose Diridon, located at the junction between the JPBX (Caltrain) and UP (Union Pacific) routes used by Amtrak and ACE.
Three Union Pacific locomotives make a cameo appearance in the sidings, but there were no freight trains. This year I decided to keep filming into the dark as long as I could, trying to make the best use of the station lighting. I had to leave at 7pm to catch my flight to Seattle.

8:34 and 20:31 should both be noted. At those timeframes, ACE Cab Car #3309 and P42DC #47 were seen. You know why I should point that out? Because both were destroyed in wrecks soon thereafter and (i'm pretty sure) have been scrapped.

The original ACE Cab Cars and the P42DCs are still going good right now. The P42s should last several more years against the Chargers, and I don't believe there are any plans for ACE to replace their existing Cab Cars any time soon.

Now that I watch this video again, there are a few more timeframes worth pointing out too. 11:24 That's Cab Car 120. Anyone who ever catches that unit leading is said to be permanently blessed with miracles and good luck. It's horn and bell are also absolutely angelic. But it's horrifyingly rare for 120 (or it's equally amazing brother, 119) to ever be leading. Now that you know this, you should cherish that you have a real video of it leading a train. 24:55 ACE 3309's death was only a little over a month away at the time this footage was filmed. That consist was the very same that would be involved, only instead of 3309 leading, 3307 was. Shortly after this video was taken, they took 3307 off and replaced it with 3309, which then, that exact consist would be involved in what would be involved in the Sunol Disaster, and 3309 would be completely destroyed.

I didn't know that all three roads shared tracks. thought they all had their own lines. well except toward San Jose were Caltrans and Amtrak share a bit of track. When I took the CZ back from Emeryville in 2007 wee had to detour on the ACE for a bit because something happened on the rails toward Sacramento. ACE Changed the C to Corridor.

I wish the Ace SC 44 charger train locomotives 🚂 models were in service they're My favorite train 🚂 locomotives models it be fantastic if they were running in that year

They were still in the design phase at that time. From what I've seen, it's nothing but Chargers everywhere these days. The P42s are on their way out, the F59s are virtually all gone... In my opinion, there's nothing more boring than a homogenized fleet, everything the same. No variety.

+Dubstep Dog03 Yeah. I decided not to record it as I was too close. I stopped filming and moved aside so it didn't blow me and my possessions over. (I actually had a backpack, suitcase and shopping bag with me as I was flying back to Seattle in the evening from SJC airport).

Why are so many of them 'going backwards'? Is the signaling good enough that line of sight for where you're going isn't needed?

+Norman Rasmussen The trains 'going backwards' actually have the driver at the front of the train (in one of the little windows) in a 'cab' with controls which the engine on the rear of the train responds to. It means the whole train doesn't have to be turned around on either end.
