It is 100% a cash grab for Topps. They haven't sold a Topps Chrome basketball or football product in *years* and they aren't too far away from having licensing, they should have waited until they had their license.

They compare this issue to 1996. In 1996 Topps Chrome was advertised as premium cards. Now they are advertised as "high-quality, collectible basketball cards." That's a big difference.

I have pretty strong feelings about Topps Chrome basketball. I think it's the most hideous set I've seen in quite a while. I honestly wouldn't pay $100 for one of those hobby boxes if I had to keep the cards. As someone with a limited hobby budget it's insane to me to spend over $500 on a Wemby lottery ticket. And as always, love watching your Sunday morning videos with a cup of coffee and the Premier League.

Hello Mike, another Great Circling the Bases Podcast,I bought a Rickey Henderson PSA 8.5 back in 2018 which I am keeping in my PC the other one I have looks like it was Run Over by a Truck but I have keep it since my Childhood, the Buyer who bought that Brock Purdy at a Card Show got Screwed I heard that the Back of the Card wasn't as Bad as the Front,Buyer Beware what you're Buying at least at the show he could inspect the card 1st,Good Day to you All.

You talked about a pack of cards costing .59 cents. I am 75 years old and hated spending my money on cards because I would never get White Sox cards. We were spending a nickel at that time. I could have had a Mantle and didn’t care. If I had one it probably would have ended up in the spokes of my bike. Since the 80’s it has escalated until today, money is the driving force. Grading isn’t a scam but it is a means to driving card prices up. Just because a card is in a graded holder and someone tells you is authentic doesn’t mean it is. What are people willing to do to make a dollar? Right now collecting is on the hype train. How long will it last? I have my memories and am looking to get off at the next stop.

As crazy as the hobby is - I predict CGC will offer a service where they “Guarantee Pack to Slab” so no chance of trimming with a special label denoting as such. Buy your box from Topps (Fanatics) and for a fee of X CGC will open and slab every card in the box.

Interesting that on the ‘72 throwbacks, Topps chose to swap the team name & position. Having “CENTER” really big looks odd to me. “SPURS” would have been much cooler (not to mention more in sync with the ‘72 set)

A lot to recap this week, especially with Topps Chrome basketball. It will be better when they have the NBA license. I understand people complaining about breakers today, but the hobby has changed as this is what it is today, it will never go back to the days when packs were $0.35. There is still room in the hobby for all type of collectors, except for opening low priced packs to get a mega hit card. Sounds like that auction company that sold the Ruth ball is not reputable similar to Mecari. Definitely buy the Rickey at SGC 9.5 if I’m a collector. Buy the card not the grade. Great clearing the bases episode.

The "damage" on the bat relic could be the blue ink transfer from an MLB ball after being hit by the bat. So, I guess Topps is inferring the bat relic shows wear and that it came from a bat that was actually used in no specific game, event, or season.

I stared at that Witt card the first time I saw a post about it & it never occurred to me it was a smudged autograph. I just assumed they used a scuffed up piece of the bat for some odd reason.

15:03 eBay’s definition of “Ungraded - Excellent” is a card that has “clearly visible signs of wear” and a PSA 5 grade is “EX - Excellent” so I don’t think the seller was unreasonable to describe it that way. On eBay, the condition below excellent would be “Ungraded - Very Good” which they define as “moderate to heavy damage all over” which seems a little too harsh. Wouldn’t be surprised if the card actually made it through eBay authentication.

@@JunkWaxHero Not that it matters, but the same consigner sold the Purdy card again on eBay on August 5, after it had been graded authentic and they listed it as “damaged” in the title for that auction. So in all likelihood the seller at the card show was the winner of that auction and would’ve absolutely known it was damaged and put the price sticker there to hide the dented corner intentionally. Buyers still gotta be aware but shady move by the seller at the card show.

There are alot of topps wemby chrome auto's, but this is one of the few products that have his auto's in it. So overall even with so many in Topps Chrome there is not going to be that many wemby rc auto's relative to other players from this year. I don't think topps is going to produce to many wemby rc products the rest of this year, so overall the numbers are still pretty small.

Buyers like that should be booted off the platform (that sub $13 card, with the buyer issuing demands on how he wants the card sent). It's all well and good the buyer wanting their item protected throughout delivery, but communicate that with the seller BEFORE you hit 'BUY', so that the seller can either agree to accommodate reasonable requests, or put you on the 'BYE BYE' list (blocked). Just like Panini baseball, I'm not a fan of unlicensed cards. Personally, I think those all look like trash without logos. Topps went for the money grab this year when they should've waited til next season and could've made the product way better being licensed. If it weren't for the KZbin influencer hype, this stuff would've been sitting on shelves and be on clearance in a few months.

I think saying 70 percent of the topps chrome cards don't look good is generous, I'd say more like 95 percent! I think cards and shoes are similar in the sense a shoe can look very ugly but if has a nike logo it will sell, just like there are some great looking shoes with a less popular logo and they sell much fewer and for less money. As far as the big breakers hitting the big cards, I'm absolutely a conspiracy theorist, I'm just not sure how it works anymore? I used to think breakers were being given these boxes, but the more I think about it, I would think the breakers are paying more for what they get, why would topps need to feed the breakers for all of us to see what's being pulled when these products are selling out in minutes anyway? I'd say if you're a breaker you'd pay more to get more subscribers and viewers, just my thoughts. Thanks for the great videos!

Almost every video I see now on the price of sealed product is FINALLY talking about the incredible rip off and scam all of it is. Its not collecting. It’s sports gambling. I hope we all start to just call it what it is. I hope this talk continues and changes the industry. I have no clue why people continue to throw away so much money on garbage. I can only conclude its gambling addiction straight up. I think this will all become a more serious issue as time goes on and more spotlights are shown on it. It’s really sad and as a whole makes me second guess my own buying habits even as a small dollar singles collector who does not buy sealed product. Imagine how many people are buying this stuff but behind on their mortgage, not getting their children what they need, etc.

There's very much a part of the culture that probably are addicted and totally caught up in this. I see folks tied to my local card shop that spend hundreds of dollars a week doing online sports gambling, then spend their profits on high end cards, getting them graded to then flip them, rinse, repeat. I figure if they are at least spending their winnings on $500 boxes that's better than spending their paycheks.

Regarding the Purdy damaged card. Blaming the buyer is akin to endorsing the seller's unscrupulous practices. As potential customers, we should demand better ethics from any seller who enters the card market. There is no way that seller did not know the card was damaged, because if he didn't, he sure as heck can't price cards. Would any of us blame ourselves for getting food poisoning from a restaurant saying, "it was my bad that I ate the food they were selling". Nope! I feel for the buyer and admire his humility, but in the end there is a seller out there dealing 4 figure cards that was unwilling to give the buyer a full refund, which is proof to me that the seller was fully aware and happy to pass on the card to the first unfortunate oblivious buyer. The whole situation stinks and gives all sellers a negative stigma.
