Been a hobbyist tool/knife sharpener for many years and a retired Vet. I’ve decided to start my own sharpening side business and this is one of the first pieces I have bought. Knife sharpening is therapeutic for my mental health from the demons of PTSD. Great video!

Good tutorial. Very informative nice pace in walking through the learning curve. Good shout out for others teaching sharpening that you believe helped you. I just bought an EverVolt wet sharpener. I was looking up how to lock guide at angle selected. When I saw you operating the standard jig that came with stone. I slapped my forehead "So Thats how they do that !?" Every chisel comes ground to the correct angle. We non pro sharpeners tend to mess that bevel up. So I am going to set up my dull yet never sharpened chisels by moving the manufactured bevel angle to the stone. Then set the screws. Long flat shank chisels are a plus. I liked also that you showed flattening and honing back of chisel as well. Very good work for sharpening and relaxing the mind as well.

I thought you sharpen from behind the wheel? Wheel turning towards you and less material off wheel going away from you? Thank you for your video, I have no experience sharpening knives.
@fakeitormakeit83 Жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for watching and taking time to comment ! To be honest im new to sharpening this particular way myself! Lol from what i gather is you can use it on the sharpening wheel in either direction. But sharpening with the wheel going towards the blade has a more aggressive cut the the wheel going away from the blade you are sharpening.
@keales9564 Жыл бұрын
@fakeitormakeit83 Lol! Did you notice a difference from shopping from the front or back or sharpener? I picked up my machine a while ago but isn't there a toggle switch to control the direction the wheel turns? Did the angle finder tool come with your machine? If it it did, mine is somewhere lost on my work bench. 🤪 Thanks again for taking the time making your video.
@fakeitormakeit83 Жыл бұрын
@keales9564 yes you can switch the wheels fwd or rvrs and you can move your rest to the opposite side . I have had better luck in my uneducated opinion to use the machine with the sharpening wheel going down towards the edge and the stopping wheel going away from the blade . The angle finder is meh . Because as the wheel wears down the angle finder doesnt work the same as it does on a wheel of new diameter

I read that the Tormek truing jig on a WEN does not allow you to grind away the entire width of the stone without using some sort of a shim. What did you do to make it work?
@fakeitormakeit83 Жыл бұрын
I havent experienced that on mine its very close to not being able to catch the entire stone but i am able to get the entire width on my particular machine

You happen to know the size of that thumb screw on the knife jig? It seems to get in the way when you turn it over to sharpen other side. What’s the purpose of putting the support rest on the side?
@fakeitormakeit83 Жыл бұрын
That is a great question. I havent messed with that particular jig but a few times and i noticed i had to do some readjusting. Flipping this way and that. But this weekend when i get a chance ill see if i can figure that out for ya! Thanks for watching !
@robertmunguia250 Жыл бұрын
@@fakeitormakeit83 yeah I think it needs a low profile screw like the tormek jig.

I have a question about the Wen; it seems to me that when using the guide bar to sharpen chisels against the rotation of the wheel, the guide bar is too short on the left side. I cannot use about 3/8" to 1/2' of thew grinding wheel on the left side because the hand plane blade support falls off of the guide . Do I do something wrong? Thank you for your help.
@fakeitormakeit83 Жыл бұрын
I had that problem too! If im not mistaken , if your doing what i did you need to turn the blade holder in such a way that it will allow you to go all the way to the side thats stopping you if that makes sense. The blade holder is A semetrical . So try turning the blade holder and let me know if that helps!
@zezoseller6 Жыл бұрын
dear, plz answer my question, i contacted the Wen manufacturer in china to buy this machine, they sent me a video of the machine, and i noticed that the wheel is wobbeling!! they claim that this problem belong to the wheel quality not the machine itself,,,and they may have right, because they sent more than one video of different wheels, some wheels were less moving while others r wobbeling to much....will that wobbeling affect the sharpeness?
@fakeitormakeit83 Жыл бұрын
So from what ive seen in my personal experience. If the wheel wobbles enough to unevenly contact the blade it could affect the edge profile. However if it is a minimal amount of wobble and your edges are still consistent i wouldnt worry about it. I guess it depends also on what you are trying to sharpen as well. If your sharpening a axe or somthing its not a big deal but if your sharpening a expensive kitchen knife it could be a problem. Mine wobbles slightly but it hasnt affected my chisel edges negatively so far i guess it just depends on how much wobble it is.

Can you tru it with that stone instead?
@fakeitormakeit832 жыл бұрын
I suppose to some degree you could . But the cut the stone makes is very subtle. Enough to change the grit of the water wheel depending what side you use. I think the main advantage of the tormec trueing jig is that it cuts faster and is more accurate due to the way it references off the tool holder . Its definitely worth experimentation, maybe better to try a diamond plate much the same as flattening a Japanese water stone . Thanks for watching and taking time to comment!
@robertmunguia2502 жыл бұрын
@@fakeitormakeit83 oh yeah diamond plate would be better. Thanks.

As you wear down the grinding wheel you can accurately get the angle you want by using an angle gauge. 😊
