Wolverine and the X-Men was my very first introduction to the wendigo. I had no clue they were based on an actual, real-world myth. But, I've been obsessed with them ever since and I can't answer why. Ironically, I think the Marvel version is less scary than the actual wendigo. It basically looks like the Beast from Beauty and the Beast, only spray-painted white.

Yeah, I agree. He should be more of a Wolverine villain (Can you also do one on Bloodscream and Cyber too?). Hopefully Ben Percy (Or somebody.) brings him back in a BIG way one day! Actually, I'm surprised that Al Ewing never used him during his Immortal Hulk run (He's used every other character from the Hulk mythos.). . I'll have to check out that Wolverine one-shot from 2010, that sounds interesting.

While I was a kid, my grandma always told me that the Wendigo is punishment for someone who turns against his own tribe. There have been non native tribes that eat human flesh for ceremonial purposes or for survival, thusly not being turned into a Wendigo. But if someone turns against their own people, and starts enjoying it, they start to change and reflect the monster that they are on the inside. I'm a Native American, Oji-Cree from Sandy Lake, Ontario, Canada, and this was basically a moral story that elders would tell their tribes to warn against taboos lol. I was told that anyone could turn into a Wendigo, but it isnt a viral infection or a curse that can be spread. It is a violation of nature, which Manitou punishes your soul for crossing the boundaries of nature. Turning you physically into the monster that your soul has become, being damned to live forevermore with an insatiable hunger that will never be satisfied. You'll live forever, hungry, damned and in exile.

@@phantom_blade555 she told me stories about the Island Turtle, The Man With no Face, Manitou and the Elemental Spirits, Thunderbirds, the Little People, Skin Walkers and a few others. You can look them up basically and most stories get the basics down right lol. But keep in mind, most of these stories have been changed to fit a certain narrative, like the Wendigo. A lot of authors and editors change the basis of these legends to make them fit the narrative of the story they're telling. Most of the basics are there, but they aren't exactly accurate and have been bastardized like the Wendigo by pop culture lol. The Wendigo nowadays is basically just another Werewolf when in my culture, it is something else entirely.

Some cryptozoology enthusiasts have speculated that wendigos and skinwalkers could almost be one and the same. The only difference is skinwalkers don't have themes of cannibalism, and they have the ability to not only mimic voices and animal sounds but appearances as well, hence the name _skinwalker._

The "Deer Head" image is a recent redesign dating back to 2001. In the original Algonquin folklore, they simply resembled malformed humans.
@TheOther6442 жыл бұрын
@@christophercase6042 True the original folklore doesn't depict with a deer skull like head is from 2001 movie, though I think there is another that goes back a little before that. But the whole horn thing goes back to 1983 and I think there was something back in the 1930's or 40's? And I think Algernon Blackwood 1910's book The Wendigo depicted it with antlers and a deer skull head.
@Bluesit322 жыл бұрын
Why not? They weren't supposed to have a deer head either. The original description was of a tall starving human. Their flesh is pulled tightly over their bones, as if they had no fat or muscle tissue left for the body to resort to consuming. They look as pleasant as they smell.

In legend, they are eternally hungry, always hunting and killing, including love ones. It's a spirit of evil that is haunted by the cold and hunger. So imagine never being satisfied.not a curse of the gods by the possession of an evil spirit. Hard to kill and your not in control.

Why do they say Wolverine’s most Underrated mythology monstrosity when The Wendigo is one of Hulk’s main villains(well not main main)? They even said Wendigo first appeared in Hulk’s comic not Wolverine’s. And majority of Wendigo’s appearances are in Hulk’s comics. Idk why people try to include Wolverine all the time. I have no problem with him he’s not one of my favorite characters but I don’t have a problem with him either though. But compared to Hulk Wolverine has barely even fought the Wendigo hell, Hulks even been turned into the Wendigo before. He called himself WendiHulk. But I just wanted to point that out right here because spreading misinformation like this can get people confused. Yes, Wolverine has fought Wendigo on multiple occasions but Wendigo is a Hulk villain more than he is a Wolverine villain and this channel should’ve known that before putting out this video. Oh, and just because Wolverine and Wendigo are both from Canada doesn’t mean that The Wendigo is one of Wolverine’s main foes! I say that because the Wendigo is not only based on Canada it’s where someone brings the curse to, it’s been at a bunch of different locations. The Wendigo curse was in Las Vegas one time and there were like 20 Wendigo because a man killed another and put the body into a food grinder and feed his body to people who didn’t know and all those people transformed into Wendingo. And guess what, that was a Hulk comic not Wolverine!

@TheOther6442 жыл бұрын
@@j2174 I think it looks cool some time, with the antlers and deer skull. But agree, it's not accurate to the myth. Marvel's Wendigo looks great, but a few times they oddly gave him horns, and the race thing? To me it looked like the curse was being manipulated during those stories, and not Marvel turned it into a race or I hope that's what happened.
