Only hand tools. I have long wanted to make a planer, but I wanted it from some kind of hard wood, but in order to plan wenge or ebony, you need to grind chisels and planers at an angle of at least 40 degrees! But since thanks to you I got stones, I decided to do it! The coating is, as usual, tung oil, then after shooting it was rubbed with shellac. Thank you for watching!

Really beautiful tool, and a life time piece that will help you create. For me that feeling of picking up and working with a tool you have made yourself, it’s one of the reasons woodworking is so special. Beautifully executed, really enjoying this channel!

Nice, good chisel work, I don't like how some people cut two pieces of wood and laminate the sides.

Agreed - this is the 'proper' way in my eyes. I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with the lamination approach, it's faster and easier... I just don't like it 😂 Made a couple of planes by the shown technique, a mini shoulder with brass sole and an experimental scraper, very happy with both

Beautiful work and well made video. I want to make a wooden plane as I've inherited two Japanese blades that would do well in a plane like this. The project is intimidating but your work inspires me to give it a shot. Thanks!

Oh, too, as soon as I get a Japanese knife, I will also make a Japanese planer! Do not be afraid, the main thing is not to rush, I myself did not expect that I would succeed😉

When I was a kid in my country, our family lived next door to a carpenter who has a shop within his house. One of the things that fascinated me was to watch him use a manual wood plane to smoothen the wood.

I have worked with wenge a few times. Seems like one of those woods that if you just walk by and look at it wrong, you get nasty splinters from it..... And I mean really nasty splinters! Nice work.

I have no experience with Wenge wood and from your video it appeared to be a challenging wood to work with despite your eminent and skillful hands. It seemed very hard and somewhat brittle? 😊 The plane came out fantastic! Wish I had a beautiful plane like that in my woodshop - ten thumbs up! 😊
@MichaelIreland
@MichaelIreland Жыл бұрын
I've dabbled with Wenge, except my skill is laughable next to this guy. Wenge can be exceptionally splintery, and sometimes the grain has annoying waves (reversals) that catch & tear on a plane. This fellow has amazing skill, and impressively sharp tools. If I were to attempt replicating this project, I might switch to bloodwood which isn't as tough, but faaaaarrrr more forgiving to work with. Better for noobs like me haha 😂

Hello, thank you for the content, i had a quick question before i make a relevant comment about the video.what earphone are you using? i listen to music when woodworking also, but directly from the mobile and my wife tell it makes too much noise for the kiddies, so basically i don't work around nap times :D I was wondering how you would make a plane without special equipment like planes maker rasp and so on .. but the jigsaw blade held in the pliers trick made my day :D Amazing work yet again. I love the ambiance of your video so much, i wish i could motivate myself enough to share like you do!

Beautiful job! But you're not quite finished yet. You will want to grab a letter and number stamp kit and stamp your initials and date. I like to just to month and year. Even more fun in the long run is to also make up your own "maker's mark" stamp along with the date. Then 32 years from now you can look at your work and like I can do with my first plane that it's been around since 1991 and well used.
