This interesting recording was uploaded by Purge1212 (bit.ly/2TqHoJ9). They're hella underrated so by all means check 'em out.
Thanks to Honest Anthems: / channel for helping me translate!
Wenn Die Soldaten is a traditional German military march. This version emerged during the DDR and has heavy anti-west themes, with references to nuclear holocaust and fighting to the death against the United States.
I do not own any of the audio or footage used in this video, all content belongs to their respective owners.
These songs are for educational purposes and do not reflect my beliefs or are meant to further a political agenda.

@@lordcawdorofmordor2549 there wasn't any more of a fascist threat then an imperial threat from any other country. At the time the right of conquest was legal. It was just to settle a score against germany. It could have been reduced to a regional war rather then a world war however the allies insisted on war against germany as both the germans and soviets violated the allied guaranteed sovereignty of poland but the allies didn't declare war on the soviets. Multiple peace offers were extended by germany all were shot down by the allies. The standards and international law of the time was very different then modern times which many forget when looking back at historical events.

@Homo Erectus ...but the DDR aped old Prussian militarism in style. That was one way to show that the DDR really was German, to contrast with the Americanized Bundeswehr, and perhaps to give people with conservative values an outlet in the "National People's Army". The DDR did not want to be seen as aping the Red Army. So even if the army of the DDR served the defense of "socialism" it could offer continuity of old German traditions (Nazism of course rejected).
@yottadrive

@@paulbrower4265 Tradition was not important for Soviet Union, unless for political aplications. East Germany was soo poor that they needed to use old Nazi uniforms. @hoxhacat8195
@hoxhacat8195 2 жыл бұрын
@@TonyBustaroni "Didn't want Germany communist", he wanted the world to be communist as we are internationalists and Communism is a global, international idea. Communism involves a stateless, classless, moneyless society with the means of production held in common. The nations which you would most likely classify as having featured or established "Communism" were only Socialist, most of the time, State-Socialist, Marxist-Leninist nations which were merely in the transitory stage between Capitalism and Communism. Socialism has done many good things such as improve literacy, healthcare, education, housing, standards of living, qualities of life, increased lifespan such as in China, turned feudal backwaters into economic superpowers, won the Second World War, industrialized nations, increased rights for minorities and women, improved democracy, etc. According to the study from 1986 by S Ceresto and H Waitzkin PhD called "Capitalism, Socialism, and the Physical Quality of Life" given equal levels of economic development, Socialist nations on average had higher standards of living than Capitalist nations, also, according to that same study, given equal levels of economic development, Socialist nations had higher levels of caloric intake, meaning contrary to popular belief, people in socialist nations actually eat more food than capitalist ones. Socialism has evidently greatly increased prosperity. We live in a society where greed is heavily related to and influenced by the mode of production and property relations, human nature changes, changes all the time due to certain material conditions. People are greedy under capitalism because capitalism makes you have to, you have to outcompete your competitors if you're a business owner, you have to outcompete your co-workers if you're a worker, etc. If you went back in the feudal time period and told them about capitalism they most likely would've laughed at you, so of course you laugh at me telling you about one of the next stages of societal development after socialism, how do I know capitalism isn't the last stage and that socialism and eventually communism WILL replace it, well due to contradictions within capitalist society whether they are class or otherwise, we analyse these contradictions through what is known as dialectical materialism. History is primarily influenced by class struggle, class divide, and conflict between these classes bourgeois or proletarian. "The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles" - Karl Marx

I don't know how people find a song like this that talked about the reality of nuclear war worse than the original, which was an upbeat song celebrating the same German soldiers who rushed off to ultimately die for nothing in two world wars. Maybe it's because they're people living in comfortable homes who love the aesthetics and music of war but have never had to know what the reality looked like firsthand, unlike Busch and millions of other Europeans east and west who lived through it. So they don't completely understand the dissonance of 'happy' war songs.

Based on the production of this song I don't believe this is an official East German version of Wenn die Soldaten for 2 major reasons. For one, it gravely contradicts the tone of other East German military songs which were usually not "protesty" like this song is. They were usually Nationalistic in tone and didn't make reference to Western nations. 2. The male vocals sound like they belong to Ernst Busch. A Communist singer/actor who usually made songs independently from the state. He wrote and covered protest songs as well as singing his own versions of Communist anthems. My guess is that this is a version he made in protest to Western aggression during the Cold War, rather than a state sanctioned song.

1. The intended audience may have been NATO countries through communist or fellow-traveler 'peace' movements. It sounds as if a warning to peoples in NATO countries, including the Bundesrepublik, that their governments were intent on invading the Warsaw Pact countries with resulting mass death that could escalate into nuclear war. 2. Ernst Busch was a regime toady. The propaganda exploits children (and propaganda from totalitarian regimes usually do) who will do anything to curry favor with teachers, parents, etc.

This song is so fucking creepy... down to the instrumentation with that weird clarinet melody before every verse, and the suspended, descending notes in the kids choir singing the opening. It really reflects a time when people truly feared that total annihilation could come at any moment. The happy tone of the song combined with the grim lyrics, with words like ‘Ami-Panzer’, a childish-sounding slang word for (enemy) American tanks. It’s just so creepy.

According to Russian Wikipedia, this is anti-war song, where all terrors, caused by the war, are shown. There is no intentional anti-west propaganda. Here is the English translation of this information: "In the German Democratic Republic there was an anti-war version of this song performed by Ernst Bush with the words: “When soldiers walk around the city, they bring death and misfortune.”" So, the information in bio is not entirely true.
