As a former hazmat tech who did multiple confined space entries, I'm very glad you guys didn't continue to push your luck. Disturbing sediment can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as H2S which is a highly deadly gas. Oxygen levels can also drop when entering different parts of a cavern and you'll have zero notice as hypoxia sets in. When we did confined space entries we always did so with a multigas meter with a PID to measure oxygen levels, VOCs, explosive levels, and various other compounds depending on the environment. We also always entered with an escape air pack and mask to give us 5 mins of fresh air to breath in case of an emergency. We also had an SCBA on standby for rescue if need be.

So many have already mentioned concerns about air quality. As a CSE expert in the sewer industry I can’t agree more. These shenanigans are taken much too lightly. Stirring up silt will release trapped gases that will quickly displace O2. Once that happens you have seconds to evac before going dark. Sewer workers have died of this in an open to the sky chamber. I advise more caution.

Yes, they use some very basic equipment for certain climbs or descents, but overall the caves they explore involve just basic spelunking, scrambling, water wading and just having the nerve to push onward, i.e. nothing too technical. This cave would require actual cave water diving (at least based on what Matt is describing), not just wading and swimming, an incredibly technical set of skills and one of the most dangerous types of exploration. Not to mention any additional variables from this man made structure being there and different added risks due to that.

I had has much anxiety as watching free climbing. A friend of a friend was cave diving as a hobby, an expert in diving for 20+years. Chasing the adrenalin of drawing a new map, he met his faith. To be honest, there are 4major risk. 1: managing oxygen including stress 2: Getting lost / no visibility from sediment / desorientation ( lifeline can fail ) 3: getting physically stuck / damage to equipment 4: depth is the most dangerous Imagine the feeling knowing that you don't manage to get out of the cave and seeing your oxygen getting low, adrenaline, panic, increased oxygen consumption and drowning. You see all of that coming...

if you look floowstones, they seem to be quite exactly level the water, is they only form in the air, not under the water . Was the cave normally filled up mutch more there probably would be less flow stones (shorter ) Regarding high methane and other non breathable gases in closed environments /gas pockets , you dont feel drunk; you just pass out after 2 breaths and will suffocate fast if the methane level is high enough , if someone try to rescue you without usinga eternal air supply they pass out also. I read about some wreck divers that came uppon a "air pocket" in a wreck ,they thought cool ! Let's go in : they surfaces in the "air bubble " but kept Using there air supply to breath to be safe . after a short time they felt someting was very wrong! The unprotected skin on there faces was hurting with a burning sensation. They feelt a powerful stench through the diving masks and the eyes was hurting bad . it was hydrogen sulfide from the petrufication processes that had collected in the gas pocket. Not air. They left eminently. To avoid the risk of somone dieing or geting in danger they then Smashed the porthole so the gases vented out . After the dive they noticed that the aluminium air tanks had some corrosion on the upper part (hydrogen sulfide is corrosive) . Imagen if they had surfacesed and eminently taken a beep breath or two of that "air" ... Anoder thing is the fact that methane may creates a "ex environment" , any electric spark ignition source can make it burn explosively. Light and electronics used should be made with / or combined with houses /covers with the proper ex classification . IP class.

By no means any sort of dive expert, but my understanding is that the concern mostly lies within chambers that are sealed off from the outside air. If you have to dive under water and go to an area that has no way for air to move into, you could potentially hit an chamber full of harmful gasses that have been trapped. You made the right call not going to an area only accessible by fully submerging yourself.
@946towguy2

With the water in the cave, anoxic bacteria can produce H2S gas which is heavier than air and will hang around for a long time unless you literally drag an air hose in there and displace it out. The moment you start tromping in the silt, the gas can get released in large volumes which can quickly be fatal. Rarified air also may have no breathable oxygen or be otherwise toxic. I've measured samples in an iron mine which were less than 1% Oxygen, about 1% CO2 and the rest almost completely dry Nitrogen, which is not poisonous but will quickly kill you from hypoxia if you don't have supplemental oxygen. A filter mask will not protect you from low oxygen. Wearing a mask with supplied air is the way to go. Inhaling that air does not create a sense of anything wrong, because our respiratory system is triggered by high CO2 and not low O2.

As plenty of others have noted, there is a concern for oxygen levels, but another thing to consider is the high potential for respiratory infections. There are creepy crawlies that have been living on the walls and ceilings, and disturbing those areas can stir up any built up excrement and mold/fungi.
