The solder cant exceed the melting point of the item itself or one will melt the item before the solder. In this case pewter has a very low melting point between 170-230°C, which is easily melted by a torch. Suspended metal also melts easier.

No saftey glasses. No gloves, especially when using caustic powders buffing. No masks when soldering or buffing. No eye protection. Only the first worker had on safety devices, glasses and mask. Wonder how soon after retirement these folks croak!

You dont wear gloves while buffing ask any number of people with less than 10 fingers and two hands.
