A common discussed aspect of Scream in 1996 is the friendship/relationship between Billy Loomis & Stu Macher. The discussion has been somewhat mixed in subtext. Kevin Williamson shared his thoughts on the notion that the pair were romantically linked last year. In today's video, I assess what Kevin Williamson said and anaylse the first Scream movie and give you guys my interpretation on the dynamic between the pair.

I would like to reiterate, Kevin Williamson who wrote Scream (1996) has confirmed that Billy & Stu were based off two homoexual serial killers. This isn't a theory any more. They were, for the most part, based off of two gay men.

YES, this also applies to Richie and Amber, every scream movie that was trying to recreate the original in some way, either as a remake or a requel, the killers are revealed to be in a romantic relationship, and they always have somewhat similar personalities to billy and stu. For example, Jill = Billy, Charlie = Stu, and Richie = Billy, and Amber = Stu

I don’t think they were gay exactly. I don’t think they were particularly defined in their sexuality either way. Stu seemed like he could go either way.. maybe more bisexual or pansexual but I think Billy was just a genuine psychopath that used his sexuality as a manipulation tool. Sure, Stu could have loved Billy and been happy to kill for him, but that doesn't mean that that love had a sexual component. I can see Stu being infatuated with Billy. The cool, confident, bad guy, everyone fancies or wants to hang out with and he chose him - Stu, the class clown - as a friend. So he was probably desperate to please him and keep him as a friend. The lines then easily blurred between wanting to be like Billy and wanting to be with Billy.

I think Stu's lines were blurred between bestfriend and crush. Personally, I think Stu might've not known what he himself was feeling, he couldn't see the lines. Billy knew this and used it to manipulate him and basically carry out the murders while he played them with the voice, the calls and taunting them like that. In short, I think Stu might've been inlove with Billy, and Billy took advantage of that.

The third act scene where they stab each other so intimately and with specific instruction has GOT to be an allegory for sexual penetration. Also, think about who was under the mask during the attacks. Sidney attacked by Stu twice and Tatum killed by Billy. They went after each other's girlfriends in an act of sacrifice to their budding homoerotic relationship... or at least that's how Stu may have saw it.

I think that stu most likely had slight feelings for billy, it shows in some scenes where stu might look at billy in a certain way. I don't believe billy had feeling's for Stu I'd say he would've manipulated Stu's feelings and mental health to convince him to help him commit the murders

Billy obviously used Stu, but I don't think it was his attraction, cause wouldn't he have admitted that to Sydney on the phone during the finale, instead of just simply saying peer pressure? I think the writer wrote them to be similar to the gay killers, in the sense that they're two close men killing others. Why else is Stu solely into women like Casey, Tatum, and even Sydney? Stu's relationship with Billy is more like Gaston and LeFou to me, since Stu wants to be a cool guy like Billy, so he let's himself be peer pressured into killing, since it could make him into a famous victim.

I am of the LGBTQ community and I have to say… It very well could’ve been but they are ultimately still friends. If anything though, if it was so, it would be on Stu’s part and he is bisexual but more straight. Billy would act on it to use that against him. They were crazy enough to kill. They may easily have cheated on their girlfriends with each other which Stu hard a softer spot for him to go along with him on the murder spree. Them stabbing each other in front of Sidney can seem to symbolize something else too especially when she is like “you sick fucks, you’ve seen one too many movies”. Sidney also asked Stu of his motive and that secrecy that loomed when you had a lover in secret, he deflects by saying peer pressure…. Instead of saying he’s in love with Billy. Gay men can clearly see that in sexuality who is pitcher-catcher in their union if it was so. Lol Due to it being hard being gay in the 90s still. You can even see the hint of underground attitude underneath how sadistic Billy stabs Stu. It almost symbolizes the shame he reluctantly feels in his feelings towards Stu. Two other things, Tatum seemed to wear the pants in the relationship with Stu. He didn’t seem to care as much when she was killed… and by that time, there was so much build up tension from Billy towards Tatum and the hint of jealousy on his part for Tatum being Stu’s girlfriend was icing on the cake after he overheard the insults she would tell Sidney about him. That vicious Stu-Sidney fight almost brings out a raging jealousy from Stu’s perspective as she is Billy’s girlfriend and he has been jealous of her the entire time, yet attracted to her too. Stu has always spawned those eccentric characters like Mickey, Charlie and Amber later on…. The elements where there to make it seem that way, and if anything, it’s more on Stu’s part for bisexuality and Billy would use it to manipulate. IT WOULD DEFINITELY MAKE SENSE and can be used in a scream later for confirmation as much as the puzzle fits! They may have sleep together once… but they are predominantly two straight male teens on a murder spree.

Well...Seeing as we know Billy is Sam's Dad...I dunno that I would say he is Gay. I would say Bisexual, Pansexual...or just generally liked the feeling of power associated with Sex. Billy liked to be in control, he was shown flirting with almost everyone at school in the first movie. I could see Billy using some kind of flirtation to manipulate and control Stu if Stu had feelings for him. That wouldn't shock me at all. I think, as a non-straight cis-man that it falls between friends and lovers. I don’t think it’s real love, but more or so two guys who may have bisexual or any other type of m/m romantic/sexual feelings, but there is something there. A good comparison I want to make is the 2003 movie Thirteen. It stars two young middle schoolers, one who actually help write the movie and in the movie they kiss each other. Now the movie is about two girls who have this very toxic and intense relationship that honestly is ver emotional and very strong. So the actresses actually addressed them maybe being gay and while I don’t think they discouraged the notion they could have had romantic feelings, they said it was more or so a big passionate relationship that was something that kind of transcended love and friendship and was just something that showed how you can be so obsessed with your friend as a friend that you feel similar to maybe being in a relationship. So taking that Logic to Billy and Stu, I think this need for blood and violence and their close friendship likely had some kind of sick relationship that could be like love, but maybe wasn’t it exactly. I mean I had a friend in high school who was a girl and literally everyone thought I was dating her, because we hung out so much and we’re so close, and while I’ll admit I did feel something between us wasn’t just friend like we didn’t really like each other sexually and not much romantically (I don’t like submissive people, which she was and she had many likes I didn’t fit either). I mean we slept together in bed after our Junior prom, even though my mom and stepdad were in the room, the only action I got was getting hit by her arm.

I just can't with this video. First off I am gay and nearly 50. My payday is pretty good. I've had years of practice and look for clues the casual observer would not notice. Personally, I never got the feeling that Stu or Billy were in love, or that Stu had feelings for Billy. Even after reading the original script for Scream, which at the time was titled 'Scary Movie', there was a scene in there where Billy was talking about raising Stu's self esteem. So I suppose that could be seen as Stu being easy to manipulate and Billy just used that. I've seen the movie multiple times, and other than that look Stu gives Billy before the final confrontation, I just don't think there was anything there besides two murderous psychopaths. I've seen a lot of people talking about this, but to me it just doesn't carry the same weight that people are saying it does.

I don’t think they were lovers but here’s the closest thing that could come to it imo….. Maybe Stu was confused or questioning his sexuality so to speak (not sure if he liked guys or girls or both). Maybe he might have had feelings for Billy and Billy might have sensed it. Billy is very manipulative so maybe he used Stu’s crush on him to his advantage (getting Stu to do what he wants). Plus I think that it’s most likely Billy might have hated Casey Becker because it is cannon that Casey and Stu dated. Like if Stu had a crush on Billy but then Casey comes along and Stu maybe does end up liking her (which threatens Billy’s control of Stu) that gives Billy a motive to hate Casey. Plus we all heard she dumped Stu for Steve but what if Casey dumped Stu because of his toxic friendship with Billy (or that was a huge part of why she left Stu). Plus everyone thinks Stu killed Casey (he had motive) but Tatum said that he was with her that night…. Which means it had to have been Billy who killed Casey (and Casey did seem to know who it was when she pulled off the mask). Plus ghostface chokes Casey and before stabbing her had the knife up to the air….. Billy does the same thing with Sidney later on so that’s another possibility that it was Billy who killed Casey. Plus it’s also ironic that Billy killer Tatum (another girlfriend of Stu). Just a thought, just my opinion and it’s not cannon 😁.

I still contend no because while he may have based the characters off of gay killers, Stu and Billy have so little interaction outside of the climax, you have to wonder what conversations happened. It sounds like Williamson had his own idea while writing the characters but the plot is a little murky; when asked why Stu went along, his only response is peer pressure, but that could mean anything. I think the moment when Billy is answering Sid about their motive and how he lists characters with no motive, I think that contributed to how he may have manipulated. But in the end, some things are unnecessary to know.

In the script the afternoon before the party Stu and Billy actually have a talk just for a brief moment making sure everything was set for the party later that evening and it showed that Billy was the dominant and Stu was submissive (nothing sexual) but it showed the puppet and puppet master

I understand that a lot of people were pushing for the false sense that they were gay but in reality I don’t think they were, I think it’s because they were both guys who were just insane, but it came off as looking like a slight gay relationship, but no way does any signs point to them as having a secret relationship.

I think Stu is a sociopath, he doesn’t have lovey dovey feelings for Billy, but like, if their killing spree was successful I could see Stu putting the moves on Billy after the dust settles out of bloodlust, like, I’ve seen that some killers get aroused after and so they’d both possibly express that lent up energy with each other, I don’t think they’d date and be out together, but if they were successful and Scream 2 was about their friend group instead of Sids there would be gay jokes aplenty I don’t think Stu loved Casey or Tatum, his ego was hurt when she left him for a football player, and Tatum was just an alibi + a way to get close to Sidney I personally think Stu was pulling the strings more than Billy, I think Roman showed Billy the stuff about his mom and then Billy went and found Stu, then once Stu knew the general idea he started coming up with specific plans Like, I think Roman set the stage but Stu was calling the shots after he got the plot synopsis if that makes sense, and then Billy is just be subtly and not so subtly manipulated into doing this or that I think Billy was used to doing what his mother told him so when she left he became someone else’s soldier for chaos, Romans, then Stu’s

I don't know if it was like a relationship in a consistent or traditional way but it definitely felt like stu was incredibly enamored with billy almost charmed in a way where stu would probably do whatever billy asks him there might have been some sexual attraction on Stu's half but I have trouble believing someone like billy could really care for anyone in that capacity they probably had a bond but I'm sure at least for billy it was on a very superficial level

I never really thought about it but Dimension Films and the Weinsteins did make Scary Movie where a lot of Inspiration from the concepts or theories of concepts of Scream alone (forget about the other movies parodied and their inspiration) were certainly used for that. The gay undertones and Doofy being the killer for one.

As a gay man who in my youth was manipulated by a pretty straight boy, trust me when I say, we are stupid and aren't fully thinking things through. We just wanna do whatever to spend more time and develop those feelings more because we believe any Man showing us kindness is him flirting cause again we were stupid gay teenagers lol Granted this is a far cry from serial killing but I digress. It's easy for us queer people to identify with Horror tropes as homosexuality was often paired with things like body gore and other taboo things. Maybe Billy was heteroflexible. Meaning he was mostly straight but was sometimes attracted to/open to a gay relationship. So he'd be with mostly girls but Stu would be one of the very few guys he'd be with.
