So much for the 'but he played on mediocre teams' argument. How can you be one of the Top 5-10 ever when you were often not even clearly the best on your own team? We guys with the 'calculators' drive uber-fans of Ryan's crazy, as if walks don't matter. So, let's move to managers. What did the managers of the time think of him? 8 All-Star teams and 9 Opening Day starts, out of ~20-21 qualifying seasons. Very good, but not among the very greatest. In retrospect, even if he had lost more and more range, the Yankees would have been better off (tough to say considering they still won a lot), to put Arod at SS and get a real 3B. Jeter was essentially a good hitting defensive-specialist, who skipped the defensive-specialist part. Meaning he was just a good hitter with light power. Some teams, some years would take that as a DH even... but the Yankees could have picked up a 30HR .300 Avg guy to play 3rd base. Cause they're the evil empire and have infinite money.

Ripken's second half of his career is not that great, but in his 20's he was amazing. He legitimately won two MVP awards, as in it wasn't just one of those vote for the best player on the best team votes. If you value WAR, he put up over 10 in his MVP seasons, and was good for 7 WAR a year for a ten-year stretch, which pretty much matches Jeter's WAR in 19 years. But more generally, at his very best, he was one of the best hitters in all of baseball, and he was also one of the best defensive SS in all of baseball.
@kpk33xАй бұрын
I would have given the 1983 MVP to Murray. Granted SS is a more crucial defensive position, but Murray was the top defensive 1B in the league AND protected Ripken in the lineup, hitting .306/33/111. In the absolutely stupid 1984 MVP vote, Ripken somehow finishes 25th after nearly putting up the same #'s? He also didn't deserve finishing 3rd in 1989 but his 1991 season was transcendent offensively...imagine how much better it could have been with some help. Ripken may have had only 3.5 great offensive seasons (83, 84, 91, and 99 when he only played 86 games) but also had 9 more good to very good offensive seasons and 3 more close to avg...when combined with superior defense every year and never missing games you would take that combo from a SS anytime especially pre 1993 when maybe 2 or 3 guys hit 20 on a team at most so I don't get their take. (I do think WAR outsizes value for SS)

Rivera is overrated lol, he was a failed starter just like 99 percent of all relievers, had a 5.94 ERA as a starter before the Yankees forced him into the bullpen. I guarantee you if he pitched his entire career as a starter you would never even know his name. Relief pitching is way easier than starting as you don’t have to face the lineup multiple times, don’t have to deal with fatigue, and can get away with 1-2 pitches like Rivera did. I think Rivera probably should be in the hall cuz he was best in his role and holds the all time record in saves, but non of the other relievers like Hoffman or lee smith deserve to be in, Rivera also didn’t deserve to be in at 100% but the sheep writers voted for him anyway.
