My brothers introduced me to Yngwie, my mind was utterly blown. A friend from church got me into MacAlpine, 2nd album, mind utterly blown. My fav MacAlpine record is Madness. So unbelievable great and tons of different song approaches.

Hi Ben. I really doubt you remember or recognize my name , but I've been following you for a couple of years and always on the edge of my seat waiting for your next Video Tutorial. I'm getting pretty close to 60 years old and I started playing guitar when I was 11. I really wish you were teaching guitar way back then in 1976. I'm quite sure I'd be well beyond a mediocre guitarist. It's so hard to change my decades of bad habits. For example ; the way I hold my pick , the way I attack the strings with my pick , the way I sweep pick , etc. I'm sure you get it. I feel like I'm starting all over as a beginner with only a few years to feel like I'm a solid Guitarist. Back in the 80s and 90s when I was doing live gigs with various Bands , and it came time for my spotlight Solo , I would basically just focus on all Legato tricks to impress the fans because I couldn't frikn pick for shit !!!!! And believe me , there was always a few guitar players in the crowd asking me questions about it after the show. Frikn embarrassing !! Anyway , thanks for all the work you do to help wannabees like me. You must put a lot of time and effort in to these Videos. So thank you very much. And I'm really sorry I just babbled on for so long. I certainly didn't mean to. I hope you and your family are doing well and staying safe. And I hope the same for all the Musicians who are Ben fans. 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸

Great advice, and great choices. I loved EVH etc but when I heard Yngwie for the first time, I was blown away. Then Cacophony (and to a lesser extent) Racer X came along, and did it in a "band" context, I wet myself. Agree on Tony, "Maximum Security" is his best work by far, still listen to it today. Phenomenal technique with amazing bends.

Always loved high speed picking runs! Have a lot respect for Shredders! Even though I would like to play like my favorite shredders some time in the future, I see fast guitar licks as one of the many elements that really turn songs really cool! But there is so many things to input in a song besides speed that this really shouldn’t be an obsession! I really love songs with a lot sound texture! And after all, the slow parts of a song are the ones that really ignite the fire for the speedy licks! ⚔️🛡

I think George Lynch and Michael Schenker have something extra, probably that “touch” you talk about, and have such a unique sound.

Fave Shredder: Yngwie (First one I discovered) I don't think I have a favorite shred album though, I'm not heavily into instrumental shred on its own, which I guess why Yngwie is so dear to my heart, since most of his stuff has vocals on it.

Yes, that's why I love Impellitteri too. They're not albums of non stop guitar, it's songs with incredible guitar in them

Ben, what do you think of Kurt Cobain's guitar playing? (I'm a big fan). Obviously he's not a shredder but his playing is instantly recognisable, difficult to emulate and surprisingly tricky in places. Having learned some of his stuff in real detail I reckon he knew a lot more technique than he'd ever admit too.

Rather than judge his guitar playing as such, I'd say he was a musician who wrote effective, meaningful music that resonated with millions. What musician could ask for more?

@@BenHigginsOfficial oh, I totally agree on that one! Nevermind came out when I was 12, just the right age discovering music, and changed my life.

Like minded here just flipped 1......Vinnie time odyssey 2.....Becker Friedman.....SMS close call as Becker was only 17 and Friedman 18...so good for so young But Vinnies 2nd album had more diversity..so gets my top pick Agree with this entire clip

No, Jason Becker coukd had been. To me is Christian muenszner from obscura. Tony macalpine and Jason Becker reincarnated in modern form and faster.

Jason Becker, yes, he's brilliant. Marty is painful to listen to though. His technique is disgusting. No synchronisation, attack or precision at all.
