2:58 - Related to "Sinks". From my understanding of geographic features a sink is sort of like a lake (in this case probably a natural basin where excess rain water collects when the river is high. What makes it a sink is that is sort of literally is like a sink in a kitchen, not sure which is named after which lol. But basically usually water erosion almost always causes basins to drain away above ground but in limestone rocks it can sometimes drain down into the bedrock instead of on the surface, essentially that's the "drain of the sink". Essentially a sink hole is literally that, the hole of the sink because there isn't any water collected or it has drained. I think this is what it's talking about but I could be wrong and it's named for an entirely different reason. Side note the channel "Casual Earth" has a video from 2 years ago called "A Hole Where You'll Freeze to Death" that looks at the limestone basin geographic formations and why/how they form. It looks at parts of Europe but also North America. Very interesting and informative video.

I would like to say one thing all through the world there is stories of 10 to 12 ft tall red-haired giants with six toes on each foot and six fingers on each hand usually with a double row of teeth. I have trouble believing that so many countries many of whom have had no contact with each other all described the same thing. I think there must have been a time when it existed. Not the giant of Kandahar they said it was 12 to 15 ft tall now it was probably a fake story but again we got the red hair that goes from continent to continent nation-to-nation. Usually in criminal cases and other things if you have multiple people that had no contact with each other in describing the same criminal it's enough to put him in jail. I feel to see the difference there are multiple countries multiple continents all describing the same thing.

Oral tradition is such an easily dismissed but valuable source of history. The history of Finno-Ugric peoples, just like that of the native Americans, has mostly been lost due to Russians committing what is essentially manifest destiny on us. Everywhere from Moscow to Siberia to Arkhangelsk to Viipuri the lands of Finno-Ugrians have been stolen. However, thanks to our oral traditions and archeology confirming its claims, that history can be reconstructed. For example: an ancient Finnish legend claimed that the chieftain of Vesilahti called Tohni was deposed by the christian Matti Kurki and escaped up north where he built a great totem for his "un-God." We then realise there's a place called "Tuhnu mountain" some hundreds of kms north of Vesilahti, and on top of that mountain we dig and find 800 year old remains of a wooden statue. Never underrestimate the value of oral tradition. It's the only tool left for indigenous peoples in the Americas AND Eurasia to reclaim our pasts.

So what about vikings? Red hair was somewhat common, as was the description of being large/sturdy. The whole point of going out was to plunder, explore and find new land. There's a big group that claim Norsemen came to the Americas. If so, then I'd say the description of "red haired barbarians" would be pretty fitting. It might also explain some of the other stories from different indigenous peoples.

Nevada is a far away place from the Atlantic coast. I find it severely unlikely to be Vikings. And while Vikings plundered; they traveled by boat. Nevada is a land locked desert state. The Great Basin even more so as none of its rivers drain into the ocean.

This is the most in depth look at the story of the 'red haired giants' of Lovelock cave i've run into. First heard of the story of the 'giants' trapped by the Paiute in a cave near Lovelock, NV while living in Reno. Ya, tall, with red hair, seems pretty solid data, 'giants' maybe more of a stretch. One local account said most of the remains found in the cave were eventually shipped to the Smithsonian (which reportedly has a record of having received them but no idea where they are now). With one exception. Supposedly there is one remaining skull from the cave kept in the collection of a very small museum in Winnemucca, further east of Lovelock along I80. There is something of a mystery in the archaeological records from the area of north central NV. There's an abundance of large projectile points from the area, the sort that would be used in the hunting of big game (at least in the early days of the stone age in N America), while there is a marked paucity of any records of any such game ever being available in the area. Archaeologists these days are pretty good with understanding stone tools and it's unlikely they're mistaking a short-hafted stone blade used as a knife or scraper or maybe a digging tool for a 'large projectile point'. Only thing making sense to me on that is a long history of conflict between groups of humans in the area, likely largely over some pretty limited resources, that these projectile points were being used against other humans on a regular basis. Alternative - they were using their equivalent of a 'bear gun' on rabbits. Who these red haired, tall people from Paiute history were remains a really interesting question, 'giants' or no.

I believe it was a cherokee legend (could be wrong about the tribe) that I heard that goes: thousands of years ago big, pale red headed people came from the sea. They gave the cherokee a weapon as a show of good will initially. I've always wondered because the ancient celts were always sea farring people if they landed deliberately or had become lost and landed in the Americas and became stranded. The ancient celts were also head hunters as part of their religion and the heads were seen as trophies but also had spiritual significance. I wonder if that could be seen as cannibalism (not saying they didnt also try to eat people lol).

@Thekoryosmenstribepodcast Жыл бұрын
If you ger a chance, Robert Sepehr has a good video about the red haired people of the americas, dna puts them here as early as 30,000 years ago. He also connects them to the tocharian mummies of china with red hair. They are tied to the celts, there are other tribes in America who talk about "pale skin red haired tall people wirh tattoos on their faces. These tribes were spread throughout north america, this is hidden stuff no one talks about. There are even ruins on the east coast that were built by these mound builders with red hair. The kicker of it all is, i am related to the Pictish of Scotland. No one really knows where they came from. They were known for mound building, red hair, and their faces and bodies adorned with tattoos. They were very tribal, and good fighters..........Well in the documentary they found pictish writing in the united states, as deep as colorado at mesa verde. And another thing they found was a serpent mound on the east coast, well there are serpents that look identical in stone in Scotland where the pictish lived. So my theory is, these red haired people were the ancient ancestors of the pictish of scotland, who are also my ancestors. There are other accounts by Europeans when they came to america of running into large white, red haired, and long red bearded men with spears, who drank deer milk, and lived in two story dwellings in what we call South carolina today. They were called the duhare tribe. They were said to be very hospitable, and nice. But covered in tattoos, on the face and whole body. We have been lied to about our history. These people were everywhere.

Your analysis seems to be hitting the right points. Translations can be misleading because we tend to look for words that mean the same as our words when actually semantic domains can differ widely. What translates as "giant" may not carry our understanding of what "giant" means. I don't know all of the typical physical characteristics of this group of indigenous people, but many indigenous people were a little shorter than many of the Europeans they came in contact with. A tall European may have seemed particularly tall to the Si-Te-Cah. Additionally, basic colors that we have words for today were not all represented in many older or ancient tongues. What translated as "red" may not have been the red we understand. It could have been brown or yellow (brunette or blonde). Without digging into the language, I can't tell, but I'm not going to assume that it means the color of a rose and not the color of a sunflower or of tree bark.
@eyetrollin710 Жыл бұрын
Very well stated, Even in our recorded history we have discrepancies in regards to meaning and how certain things are perceived, hence the false notion that ancient people didn't know what blue was, because they referenced things in different ways.
@kingtachalla6181 Жыл бұрын
(literally says they fought against literal man eating giants) "ok but like erm how do you know they meant actual man eating giants it could just be a metaphor or mistranslation"-🤓
@jimpemberton Жыл бұрын
@@kingtachalla6181 Well, the "literal" is what we are trying to determine, isn't it? It's not a metaphor or a mistranslation, but the point is that meanings get shifted in translation. These sorts of things may not lend themselves to adequate translations. So many words in English carry connotations outside of the normal denotations. "Giant" is one of these. We get certain images in our head when we see that word that may not make it a great translation. Such words as "gGiant," "tall," or "short," require a context. What does "short" mean, except by some comparison? What does "giant" mean if everyone is a giant? So here "giant" is a noun instead of an adjective. However, we have no single noun for "person who is taller than normal" in the English language, so we use "giant". We don't say, "There is a tall who is eating people." That would be a weird translation. We just have to understand that "giant" in the original language entails otherwise normal people who are taller than normal. It's the same kind of thing for colors. Different cultures perceive color differently because of the kinds of colors they encounter normally. Modern Western culture has developed an extensive production of pigments and dyes and we encounter colors in our culture in ways that less-developed cultures have not. So we have also developed a larger vocabulary to reference these colors in our communication.

Knowing there have been like 9 different species of human so far, and how different they are from one another based on location of development, and knowing that at one point there was likely a species of human that averaged 3.5 feet tall, I think it's safe to say theres a good change that what they did was wipe put the remaining faction of an independently developed human species that originated on this continent long before the natives crossed the land bridge, and that species likely just evolved to be really tall. Theres myths from the other side of the country in the north east about blue skinned, red haired giants, and theres a similar story about a tribe of them living in the Kandahar mountains in Afghanistan. We know blue skin is physically possibly, and is a result of extreme inbreeding, so it's highly possible that before the natives, there could have been a species of human here with an average hight range of 6.5-7.5 feet tall, and that remaining tribe could have become cannibalistic due to a famine or something like that, and turned cannibalism into a regular part of their culture. Yeah, seems totally plausible
