Tom Hanks is a classy man. When asked about the salary, the answer was so simple, so obvious, and so correct. Like if every body else thought like him - when we know that's not the case. 'Well, she worked more than me, more hours, so she should be paid more'. Simple, direct and obvious observation. Unfortunately not everybody thinks simple, direct and obvious. But I'm glad he does. It's a start.
@Picnicl7 жыл бұрын
Well can we have the same reasoning towards female tennis players who think that they should be paid the same despite not playing as many sets as men?
@JulyN787 жыл бұрын
Picnicl entertainment wise, in sports, I do think women should be paid for the attention they brought, combined with how much they work. Let me explica it. Sports need sponsorships. And this are brought depending on how many people go see or enjoy you playing. So, I do think athletes that, for whatever reason, can get more attention from the public should win more. Sponsorship is one part of it. There is the salary of the categories. That one should be equal and should be based on how many hours you play the sports. So, a man playing more tournaments should win more, for sure. In movies I guess that's the same. There should be the basic payiment, respecting the hours made, and sponsorship deeds, cause, let's face it, a Merry Streep takes a lot more people to the movies than a Gerald Butler, for exemple. So, it's only fair she makes more money than him. She produces more...
@kristianeriksson91647 жыл бұрын
I don't necessarily agree with you on their pay. There are more things one has to take into account than just hours worked. In movies like this one, the casting director does not want an actor, he/she wants Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks. So sure, their pay should be based on their screentime, but also criteria such as: how famous and how good is the actor. Now, it is not up to me to decide how famous Meryl Streep is compared to Tom Hanks, or how good Meryl is at acting compared to Tom, that is up to the movie-goers. So the casting director's job is to evaluate how much the actor is contributing to the movie and then base the salary on that. Of course I believe men and women should have equal pay, but it is important to remember that there are other factors then amount of hours spent which should determine someone's salary.
@JulyN787 жыл бұрын
Kristian Eriksson I Just considere sponsorship in my previous answer, before yours... Go read it. The point is, Merry Streep makes less money than Jack Nicholson - putting someone I think is the same caliber compared to her - and has less opportunities to work than he. Women are discarted when they get old. Men don't. That's a reality we have to face and address. Merryl alone can make mullins cause she has a fan base to keep people going to the movies. So, yeah, she should be paid more. But that is a paynment based on results, not the work it self. There should be a base per hour that should respect for both women and Men in all cathegories, and unfortunately there is none. So, the hour of a George Clooney in gravity is more valueble than Sandra Bullock's?!? Why?!? I guess there has to be some base for salary that would work for evybody, and sponsorship should be paid then after the results - money made on theatre releases.
@JulyN787 жыл бұрын
Kris Shaw By your logic a doctor should be paid the same as a house keeper... You are talking different cathegories of workers, right?!? Orelse for you it's just ok to have a kidney removed by a butcher... Should I apply that logic to you, by your comment?!? Apparently the capacity of thinking is really a rare quality from Tom Hanks alone. He should be paid more just for that, Jesus.

Those women that have to work under sexual pressure and put in situations is not new - however, we shouldn't keep knocking them down for not coming forward before. @beckypincalifornia19852 жыл бұрын
Following was Streep's statement made to Huffington Post in 2017, that I was able to find. According to the NYTimes article where I found it, she worked with Weinstein on August: Osage County and Iron Lady. I don't know when she first met him or if she worked with him on other movies. The above movies were made when Streep was, I believe, was in her 60s, after a long and storied career, and in a long, successful marriage. Thus, Weinstein probably knew that he could not get away with assaulting, let alone proposition her. Here is Ms. Streep’s full statement: The disgraceful news about Harvey Weinstein has appalled those of us whose work he championed, and those whose good and worthy causes he supported. The intrepid women who raised their voices to expose this abuse are our heroes. One thing can be clarified. Not everybody knew. Harvey supported the work fiercely, was exasperating but respectful with me in our working relationship, and with many others with whom he worked professionally. I didn’t know about these other offenses: I did not know about his financial settlements with actresses and colleagues; I did not know about his having meetings in his hotel room, his bathroom, or other inappropriate, coercive acts. And if everybody knew, I don’t believe that all the investigative reporters in the entertainment and the hard news media would have neglected for decades to write about it. The behavior is inexcusable, but the abuse of power familiar. Each brave voice that is raised, heard and credited by our watchdog media will ultimately change the game. I suggest reading the NYT article where she discusses being approached for unwanted sex in her early days and more background.

What a ridiculous thing to say. Most actors do it because they enjoy entertaining others and the joy it brings to others. Almost everyone on the planet has experienced joy, laughter, been moved or just entertained by a movie. I think it’s really horrible how critical people are of Meryl. Yes she called Harvey Weinstein “god” but it was before she knew about anything that was going on. As with the Roman Polanski thing. She is such a generous person and was simply giving out compliments. Of course she would not support Harvey Weinstein or Roman Polanski now after discovering what was actually going on so I think people should just back off and realise that she has good intentions and does care about rights for women. I hate it when the media take one comment and twist it so horribly. Also I think it was very unprofessional of the interviewer to put her on the spot like that. She seemed really uncomfortable with it. I felt really bad for her
@mollydyke23136 жыл бұрын
craisins 86 you can’t prove it. And we don’t know the half of what goes on in Hollywood. She may have been blackmailed. Like she said directors are in a position of power over the actors so will know things about them that others won’t. Weinstein may have threatened her and Polanski may have done the same. I genuinely can’t see her supporting someone like that unless she was scared or threatened. You can have your opinion however if you do not like her then I don’t understand why you are watching this video. I understand a lot of people do not like her at all but anyone who just comes up with one theory like you have just done does not have the right to criticise her. I understand that maybe she did support them but I don’t think that someone like Meryl who has very strong values and good morals would do that without being very scared or genuinely not knowing the persons capabilities. The whole “Weinstein is a god” statement was back in 2012 so I’m pretty sure she had no idea of what he was capable of back then.

@EvaSofie7 жыл бұрын
In her answer she was implying that she didn’t know, but is only getting the heat from people like you because of who she is. You can't just assume she knew, it’s very complicated. She was the one woman who gave HW credibility, so who knows how many careers she could screw over if she knew anything. And a man like HW would do anything he could to prevent her from finding anything out.
@simonwebster3687 жыл бұрын
Eva, you've 'assumed' that I've 'assumed' Meryl knew. I didn't state that. The core of my statement is that I'm glad the interviewer confronted her on the issue and asked her, especially Meryl as she seems to be hypersensitive to everything President Trump does but seems oblivious to things that her liberal mates like Roman Polanski do. Since Meryl devoted her entire Golden Globes 2017 speech to moralizing and preaching about the need for righteousness, it's only fair that she takes "heat" to detrmine if HER morals-in-action match her words. She placed herself in the hot seat.
@EvaSofie7 жыл бұрын

My take on harassment is this no one who out ranks someone else in the same work place should peruse an underling. Second if a flirtation should occur at the work place the second the word "No" is used all must stop. The most respected word we have should be "No" it is our right as human beings regardless of our gender to choose whether to start or even to continue forward with any kind of relationship. It doesn't matter what came before the word "No" (ex agreeing to a sexual relationship, or a flirtation) once it is spoken we must reset our relationships back to zero, until such time as a new agreement by both parties is reached. Not so difficult.

What's incredibly disappointing about this interview is that neither of them actually answer the question as to what, if anything, they knew about Weinstein. Streep and Hanks both evade the question with real skill, and spin their responses well away from what is required of them. If they are as morally and politically upstanding as they like to present themselves as being, the least they can do is be upfront about whatever complicity/responsibility/acquiescence they may or may not be guilty of.
@devoncars4077 жыл бұрын
I do not know what it is that some do not understand about equal pay and equal opportunity. Of course if you do equal work you should be paid the same and your way to the top of any industry should be as easy or as tough as your opposite gender, but to get to the top of any industry you have to constantly work 70/80 hours per week for 10 plus years non stop. You have to step on people and accept that someday someone may step on you. Work place that offer good careers is a battle zone and it is usually a non stop competition full of backstabbers. It is very rare for a man to have a career. Only a chosen few get that. The likelihood for a male to have career is less than 1%. The rest of us have jobs that we would not do if it wasn't for a financial reason.

During a private modelling session, he proceeded to ply the girl with alcohol and quaaludes, before raping her. In 2003, Hollywood figureheads including Meryl Streep, Jack Nicholson, Martin Scorsese and Harvey Weinstein gave the same man a standing ovation as he was awarded the Best Director Oscar. horrible set up of camera...the interviewer looks like she is interrogating Tom and Meryl. Also her questions and the way she talks so aggressive why Meryl response very calm...
@RalphTGP7 жыл бұрын
Meryl and Tom did their utmost to answer questions which were brave but disjointed and, if I may so, posed by a high pitched squeak. The interviewer should work on refining her voice with elocution lessons and do a little more prep to refine potential talent.

a good question would have been: "as liberal advocates of free expression in the Arts, and with this president in office, are you not worried about an evangelical christian backlash mandating morality through legal legislation?"

Okay so I don't know a massive amount of law, forget us law, vut what she says confuses me more: if these people are making more money (by tax deductions), why would you take the settlement & keep quiet, I'd stand up & shout, esp. if I knew there were other people who'd gone through the same stuff (okay I know you can lose to the "big evil guys" & may be shout out of future work & shunted by community etc)

Working Inge entertainment industry myself and knowing how much cover ip goes on behind the scenes, they knew. All is revealed in the industry, wether it's through talk, secrets heard, other actors having bad experiences or whatever the case is at the time. But to be honest, they would know more then they're willing to admit. I don't blame them for not admitting what they know beforehand or not. It's a fucked up industry. I've been taken advantage of too here in Australia in the industry by an industry "professional" or so I thought.... I even knew about the sexual allegations before Craig McCachlan way before his arrest in Australia weeks ago.. look him up if you're not sure who he is.. it's well known here about Craig,s actions and behaviour way before he was arrested... so in regards to Harvey, yes they know...

Did Meryl just equate Abraham Lincoln to tyrants?
@ahalpert7 жыл бұрын
Umm, what's wrong with them?...and Abe Lincoln? Great choice of tyrant/not...also, what do they really think about anything? This interview makes me realize just how apolitical and conservative actors actually are, at least publicly. They changed the subject quickly to talk about Ailes and othrs but wouldn't talk about Weinstein. They still won't throw his dirty ass under the bus bc they benefited from his power! I'm pretty disappointed in the whole interview and I'm not buying the me too movement...I think it's a tool for powerful and wealthy Hollywood elites to deny responsibility for their involvement in Harvey's power...also it was originally meant to be about black women being recognized as victims of predatory sexual behavior (invented by a black woman years ago) so it's another cultural theft but no one seems to care. Why can't these wealthy women invent their own slogan???
