I'm from Europe and having used cassette toilets I think you need to use it the right way, the chemicals are for breaking down the waste and keeping it smelling fresh. Also just buy RV toilet roll, it literally dissolves in the chemicals. Using public toilets to empty isn't an issue because with the contents broken down by the chemicals, the contents don't block up the toilet your using for disposal, as it's all liquid it goes out no different to flushing the toilet. Me and my partner certainly didn't need to empty it every 24 hours as one person has suggested. And we didn't have to allow for a full blank tanks weight if you have a huge on board tank. I wouldn't use anything else, but everybody has their own preferences. But a review on it being used as designed would have been better . Still love your channel though 😊

I feel like the whole point of having a dedicated toilet in your rig is so you can drop a deuce in relative comfort. If a cassette is only good as a big fancy piss jug, I can't imagine it being a good solution for most vanlifers.

iamchillydogg sure, but I think it speaks volumes that they've decided use it this way. They've also said they still go to dump stations for their grey water, so they haven't eliminated that from their routine. People have a natural tendency to convince themselves what they currently have is the best option for their lifestyle, even if there are objectively better solutions. Sure, they've made it work, but in reading between the lines it feels like that's what is going on here. 🤷‍♂️

Eating something that didn't agree with you or getting a bug and the cassette toilet or even composting one would be useless. I don't know, I'm not sold. spending all that money on an RV and still needing to use public restrooms or digging holes just doesn't seem right. Power to you for being able to do it.

This is a good point, also if you are going too poo outside, what is the difference in pooping in the ground and dumping the toilet into the ground? It’s all waist. I get you would have to dig a little bit of a deeper hole but for the use of using the toilet I would say worth it. I believe nature would make a national compost toilet in the the liquid would just sink as the solids would get covered by dirt. If your far out in the woods I think that it would be ok. As for the non-toxic Chemical that you add if it’s same as marine grade it should be fine. 1 last thing if you feel bad about it just know at 3nm from land ships dump there tanks. Just a thought. Enjoy your toilet. Happy trails

@@TheMacgyver3441: The difference is that many do not bury the turdles properly (deep enough, far away from water sources and sans the toilet papaer) and you end up with areas littered with poop and paper. Many a free camping area has become a pay campground due to over use. Its better to have a cassette toilet and dump it when you can.

Hi! I‘m from Germany and have the same cassette in my RV. I do not use it only for urine. If outside temperatures are high, I have to dump it every second day. For In-the-middle-of-nowhere situations we have a second cassette for change. I use chemicals, therefore I only use dumping stations, which you find very often in most parts of Europe. My first camper had a cassette toilet in it... given I wasn't in it for more than a few days at a time, I used it for everything. With proper chemicals and dissolving TP, it worked great and never smelled up the camper. The new camper has a 30 gallon black tank, which is amazing for an 18' camper.

I have a twenty-seven foot Jayco travel trailer with traditional three tank system, black, gray, and fresh water. I only put #1 liquid in the black tank. I usually find a campground washroom, outhouse, public washroom, or a portable washroom to do #2. My wife would not do that and put #2 in the black tank, but since she passed away, it has been liquids only. Even when she was here, it was only her contribution of #2 in the black tank. That made it a lot easier to dump and keep from being odiferous. Way back when the kids were young, we had popup campers using a port-a-potty. With that, I would empty it daily, but we didn’t boondock. I can see how it would be much more convenient to have a cassette toilet when boondocking. Breaking camp to dump a black water tank is not my favorite thing to do.

I rented a Hymer for 5 weeks in Europe way back in 2005. It had a basic cassette toilet. I used it more for number 2 than one and had no issues at all. For a diy van a cassette or compost toilet along with a 5 gallon jug grey tank would be the way to go I think.

Thanks for the straight poop on this. I for one was straining to get answers. All joking aside, this was an informative video for me. I can definitely see the advantages in a cassette toilet. Hi both. There are not only blackwater tanks and cassette toilets. A composting toilet would solve most of the problems: no bad smelling, no energy consumption, no chemical treatment, no waste of water. Its a very clean solution and dumping is so easy. We are using a Kildwick composting toilet in our expedition vehicle and a very very happy with this solution.

The problem is the same with all 3 major classes of camodes, they have to be emptied at some time or other. cassette contents have to be disposed of, so does composting toilets, and so does the contents of a black tank. Six in one hand, half dozen in the other, no pun intended. Those are your choices. Mishandle any one of them and you have a problem. It comes down to your preference........

Rory Roberts Yes but the least problematic toilet is definitely a composting one. But my issue is different all together afterall. It's the cleanup after your done doing the #2. How does one cleanup and dispose off the toilet paper properly, I use both toilet paper and water. And don't want to change that !

Well, I just spent two weeks RVing in Europe and all I can say is I do not like the cassette toilet. Two people using the toilet normally will fill up that thing every 24 hours, and we even used public restrooms from time to time. That added an extra layer of stress to our travel when that dreaded red light came on and we couldn't find a dump facility. While in theory you can empty it in a regular toilet, you are dumping 3.75 gallons at once, which a regular toilet is not designed to handle. The only reason they use cassette toilets in Europe is because there is no such thing as full hookups and their RVs are small, so it is a good compromise. It is the way things are done over there, so we had to adapt, and in the end it wasn't too bad. While in the USA, I'll stick to my 25 gallon black tank that can last us almost a week... but to each its own. One of the main reasons I like RVing is that I can poop in peace, in my own clean toilet. By the way, this is just my opinion, I know many people who swear by them.
@Hundert1
@Hundert1 6 жыл бұрын
Traveling Robert I agree. Cassette toilets have their place though. Also, most the typical toilets I know just keep emptying themselves pretty fast, no matter how much we fill them, as long as we keep adding stuff. That's actually the way they work. We flip the handle which allows a bunch of water from the tank to sorta push whatever's in the bowl over a hump and down the pipe. Happy RVing

Two people produced five gallons of feces and urine in 24 hours?? I don't think cassette toilets were made for a couple of literal elephants. Even the Thetford Porta-Potti Curve is 5 gallons (which is a freestanding cassette toilet).
@koningbolo4700
@koningbolo4700 6 жыл бұрын
There are many sizes of cassette toilets from a small 8 liter marine version to a 24 liter 4 person RV version. Depending on the size got stuck with you may need to empty the tank more frequently. That being said I find it rather weird that your alotted toilet was full every 24 hrs. I suspect misuse of the thing to a large extend. Even an 8 liter (roughtly 1,8 gallon) marine porta potti (cassette toilet) version should last 2 people with normal stool production at least 2-3 days if used as designed. I suspect you either flush a lot (read: over enthusiasticly, that is beyond the recommended 3-4 times pulling the plunger) , you take unbelievable large and frequent stool and pee dumps or use the thing with a platoon of family members.

You can't really overfill a regular toilet. As soon as you start dumping, it starts going down the drain. Once it starts, the vacuum created pulls everything down the drain.

Enjoyed the video. Have always thought a cassette was the way to go due to convenience. But now I'm not so sure. Convenience is about the same I now see, as with our new Sprinter van, dumping only takes about 5-10 minutes. We've only had to wait in line once in 5 years, and we seldom have to go looking for a place many parks have dump sites and we just do it on the way out. Yes if you boon dock constantly, it would be a problem. But since our gray tank is about 32 gallons vs 4.5 we can go about 7 times as long. Plus we'll have 4 of us for 3 days, so 4.5 gallons just wouldn't cut it. I agree though, depending on life style with a small camper, 1-2 people, and a lot of boon docking or few dump stations, it might work better.

Cassette toilets are the norm in Europe and they are for both liquids and solids, the biodegradable chemicals used in them break down the solids and eliminate any smell. All campsites have a place to empty them and it takes just a few minutes. Most campsite will allow you to empty your cassette even if you aren’t staying there, sometimes for a small fee. Plus you can just empty them down a normal toilet pan.

I've lived in trailers since 1986. Used my onboard tanks until I started living in four season areas where tanks and waste lines freeze if they are not insulated and/or heated. One winter I found I couldn't flush my toilet so I had to run out in the woods to take a dump. Thought about getting a portable toilet for emergencies, then I thought, 'hell, I've already got one'. I just put a 13 gallon plastic trash bag (I use TWO now as one leaked and you don't want to have to clean out the bowl by hand!). After a few dumps I knot the bag and put it in the trash. It's legal to dump waste like that if it's in a closed bag. I use a male urinal for night time pees and just dump it outside when I'm in a rural setting or in a toilet when I'm near one. I use two urinals in case on fills up. Way cheaper than all this other stuff and not nasty at all. How you two take a dump is the interesting part. Who wants to go squat out side unless you have one of those portable toilet frames or that seat you put on a five gallon bucket (hope you don't tip over while you're going!) For couples you would just change the trash bag every time, although I don't because I'm single and don't mind taking several dumps before changing the bag. I use a Fabreze spray if I think things are stinky. Most important is to NOT MIX URINE WITH FECES...that's what makes it stink. A composting toilet is my next best choice...one that doesn't require expensive bags to dump it.

Good video. One thing I would point out is that the reference to the capacity is in US gallons rather than UK which are larger. The fact that a UK gallon weighs about 10 pounds rather than 8. It's not so important here but it can cause confusion when fuel consumption is quoted. Most important of all is that if an American and a Brit offer you a pint of beer always go for the Brit. You'll get more.

I agree with many of these concerns! When I got to go number one or number two I got to go!!! There is no way I will have time to go find a private place then dig a hole... by that time I’ll have completely soiled myself! There’s no point in having a toilet if you can’t do all of your business! It’s just too bad about that cassette, it looks really too small! I don’t think I would mind if I had to dump it every day. I need my peace and quiet to do my business and I Will NOT EVER, unless I’m in an extreme survival situation or in the apocalypse, poop 💩 &/or pee in the woods! And pack your toilet paper out separately; WTF?!?!!! Oh Lord God Please SAVE Me! What’s the use of having a toilet, if you can’t use it for your business; ALL OF YOUR BUSINESS, #1 & #2????

I've been obsessed with these van life videos, watching from the comfort of my spacious house. I have a Prius wagon and have given consideration to doing some traveling in it. BUT my biggest concern by far is pooping. Forget that I gotta pee every hour. And by the way why don't some of the female travelers just get outside and squat to pee. I'd do that before even using a nasty Portapotti. No problem. Been there, done that. But back to the poop. Unlike Sheldon, I do not have a designated time for bowel release. I have little control over timing and urgency and it is not a one-time event in the course of a day. If I waited to find a facility, well, let's not go there, ok? It would not be pretty. I have yet to come up with a solution.

Sharon Hammer I agree with you! It’s not really practical to consider not using the toilet for #2, especially the older you get. I would think that as another person suggested , getting a spare cassette would be a good idea and trying to dump your main cassette every 2 days. I don’t like the idea of putting my TP IN THE GArbage. Might as well use a bucket toilet and just dump the plastic bags.

We have one in our narrowboat in the UK we use an eco friendly chemical called eslan green and can put any toilet paper down which just dissolves. Also we have a second cassette, the boat is 63ft long so no problem with space, and find it will last us about 5 days each one. Want to find out more about narrowboat look up cruising the cut.

I am glad it is working for you. The single most disgusting I have ever experience in my entire life was emptying the cassette in my boats porta potty. Never again. Dumping my rv black tank in comparison is virtually painless most of the time

The Russos offer a protocol similar to the one that we used in our travel trailer. In the long run it saves a lot of hassles. The only difference is that we used wipes instead of toilet paper. An RV toilet just isn't as easy to use as one in your own home as friends with a motorhome have found out.

If I was going to purchase a camper van anyway, I'd want the option of having a toilet... This seems practical, and great insurance for when you're in a crappy situation needing immediate attention.

Cassette toilets are very popular in Australian caravans ( think the North Americans call caravans trailers). I have a 20ft caravan with large water tanks, solar, lithium batteries, and a second Cassette so we can stop off grid for about 6 to 7 nights without having to dump or fill our water.

Guys the green elsan fluid is bio friendly, can be used in sceptic tank systems and you only need that , it serves As tank and flush , it breaks waste down and really doesn’t smell when emptied ,because it’s already doing its job and broken the waste down , also dose not as chemically strong as the traditional blue and red fluids, so one fluid also means less cost. In the UK and Europe nearly all campers , motorhomes and Caravans have used this system for decades, even the portable thetford porta potti Range which can be used in tents boats or anywhere (there are even frames for elderly or low mobility people to use in a bedroom) I think only the US and Canada build with mostly black tanks, also only use elsan toilet paper and you will be fine ,use normal toilet paper and you’re asking for problems and probably for the camp ground back waste disposal system as it causes blockages in both, the vent button makes emptying very quick, in Europe the emptying points are designed to minimise splashback, in a lot of posh Campsites are service points we are starting to see special automated emptying and cleaning machines for a small charge (they look a bit like a vending machine) for a completely hands free experience

In your videos, have I missed your daily trips to public toilets? Seems like an important part of your choices for RV life. In fact, your videos might include your ratings of the toilets you used each day.

An option if one is not able to have a black tank or if the smaller size of the cassette tank is being considered would be to have the following practice. 1. Put all toilet paper in a separate small trash can using a grocery bag as a liner. 2. Mostly just use for #1-pee water. 3. Use a large coffee pot liner or something similar, maybe heavy duty paper towels in the bowl to capture the #2-poop waste which allows for pee to drain through. Putting then these contents with your toilet/bath tissue into the small trash container, wrapping it up and disposing of the same as with baby diapers. I see this toilet as giving more options. Wonder if it's possible to have both as usable options?

First was the 8 track cassette toilet. Then the mini Cassette toilet. Then the cassette toilet. And the sony cassette toilet player. Joking aside I have used a portable Cassette for 13 years. Living in BC Canada in bear ,cougar country it is much safer to use a cassette toilet in the van at night than fumbling outside around in the dark. I named my portable cassette toilet the THUNDER BOX. After a large plywood box with a hole used for a toilet in my army reserve.days. There was lots of thunder resonating in that box.

I have a cassette toilet in my Northstar truck camper. Mine seems larger than the unit shown in the video. Even so with 2 of us, it is necessary to dump about every 2 days or a bit longer if we also use other facilities. No way would I dig a hole. I use my toilet day or night. Finding a place to empty is rarely an issue. I can usually find a convenient outhouse, flush toilet or even a dump station. Dump stations are often few and far between. Even National Park campgrounds often do not have them. Forest service and BLM campgrounds rarely have dump stations.

No they are excellent toilets, they just seem to be very twee about using it, in UK and Europe 99.5 % of campers rvs and Caravan or trailers to some use exactly this system I don’t see what the big deal about not using it is about, if you need a toilet for tent even roof tent use look at a thetford porta poti

This fact, how they are using it, may also be a commentary on the class B rv. The "thought" of stored poo just a few feet away from you, no matter where you are in the RV.... Might be a mental thing. I think a black tank is a bit more out of sight out of mind.

We use these in New Zealand they work fine for number one and two We brought an extra tank so we dump When both are full which is every 5 or 6 days with 2 people. We use chemicals in the flush water To stop the odor. Nz has many dump stations where you Can dump these, you can dump them In a regular flush toilet if nothing else Is aviable
