This kind of buildings are called slab or slate houses and unique to Rukai and Paiwan tribes in the mountainous areas but not all the indigenous people in Taiwan used to live in slate houses traditionally. The are 16 indigenous tribes in Taiwan are officially recognized so far and the number is expected to get bigger and bigger because if you were an aboriginal, you could get a lot of benefits and enter a college with relatively low performance requirements. The Tao people in Orchids island used to live in a semi burrow house to protect them from strong wind or typhoons.

Great video. Especially the view of the carved heads surrounding the aboriginal homes. A few centuries ago, before colonialism, the heads adorning these home would have been real; trophies of enemies taken from the field of battle and spiritually believed to protect that warrior's family living within the abode. Most people don't realize that Taiwan was the home of head hunters, a practice which didn't completely die out until the early 1900's.
