Todays video is getting ready for an upcoming project. These tools do not exist for evenly and controllable slide expanding. So we had to make them. I'm no real machinist by any stretch, I just play at being one. There are other ways to get same results, this is my method.
Thanks for watching.

Interesting to see I'm not the only one using an old South Bend lathe. I have the exact same machine as you have, and it serves me well.;

I love mine. I don’t know if there is anything it can’t do because it’s done everything I have ever asked it to.

Thank you for sharing, half the challenge is to imagine the steps needed to get to the result you want, the other half is the tools and skills to get there. As many tools are so expensive for my low usage, I look forward to trying to make more of them, appreciate your sharing and the inspiration!

I would like if you can make a video showing in detail how to synchronize the F# and E when neither of the two pads are closed properly. There are many videos on the internet, what to do when one of the two pads doesn't close but none if neither one close correctly. Keep up the work, your videos help us a lot!!!

I was thinking that you were going to use the taper feature on the lathe. But making it adjustable makes sense and it not an easy job either. Nice work. It is good to see the range of skills needed to be top level in this job.

Wow I'm surprised that Lathe came with a Taper cutting attachment. What is it an old South Bend? That's not turing between centers it's just regular turning with the tailstock. TBC requires a second center and a drive dog to drive the workpiece.

Do you have an videos' advice on bending sax right main keys if they're slightly pround? It's soft brass, so should be super easy to gently nudge it but just everywhere i've read says not to do it.

The far end hold down knob (nearest to the camera) on your tool holder is not engaged enough. This is causing your toolholder to rock up and down while cutting affecting the surface finish your getting

I guess I'm not very patient. It probably would have helped me to know what you were trying to achieve at the outset.

@@wesleemusicrepair9820 I believe that many aren't familiar enough with instrument repair to have an idea of what you were making from just the text description. A brief picture at the beginning of the finished product, or of a similar design would let people not familiar with machining understand and follow along more easily.

@@wesleemusicrepair9820 I assume you're talking about fabricating the stockings at the end of the inner slide tubes, but I still don't have a mental picture of how you're going to approach it! I'm working on my patience, though. I enjoy hearing your thought process at least as much as watching the physical work.

NEVER file on a lathe without a file handle on your file. Iv'e seen peaople get files driven into their hand from a file grabbing a piece of work .

I’ve never been uncomfortable with holding, but then most of the materials I work with are easy to control. But I will take this tip, next time you will see handles on my files. Always willing to listen to tips. Thanks

Thank you. Accidentally hitting the chuck will also grab the file. As an EMT I also have seen the chuck drive a file about 6 inches into a wrist.

@@PugDaddy the very thought of that makes my wrists hurt in sympathy. Lathes are magnificent and dangerous machines.

That isnt turning between centers. Turning betweem centers uses a centre drilled hole on both ends of the stock, and the headstock has a dead centre in it and a lathe dog drives the workpiece instead of a chuck, while the tailstock live center keeps it supported.
