“Mourn, and Divorce the Old Man” should be this sermon’s title. For many years I have heard it preached to (only) renounce or “divorce” the old man/flesh (which became works for me) , but I don’t remember anyone saying “mourn”. What mourning means to me is not mourning my old sin nature, but rather mourning my efforts; my “works unto becoming right with God”. It is offensive to my mind that I cannot obtain right-standing with God the Father through my actions, because I was raised in a household in which one was measured by their accomplishments - and I wasn’t enough. I did not possess the value in just being me to be accepted (actually, was rejected for just being me, and have spent most of my life trying to not be me and resenting that I am me). But God! Jesus was very pleased to take up residence in my heart, and to feed not upon my “God works”, but upon the Father’s grace. Today I received this grace, but it still does offend me: I’m offended that I cannot balance my own ledger; I’m offended that God the Father would exchange His Holy nature with mine - simply because He wants me. He has pursued me relentlessly for all of my 62-9/10 years - just so He can be with me and me with Him. I am mourning the loss of living a life of striving to obtain who I could not be, when I should have allowed Jesus to live through me as the man He designed me to be. If the Father is now okay with the new creation that I have become, then I am also. Thank you, Wesley, for sharing this message from your heart.
