I think there are a number of reasons with Arsenal's problems: Arsene Wenger has for some time advocated a philosophy of buying young talent and rearing them to play in the first team. The problem with this however is that you risk having players lacking a strong mentalities/ personalities. This highlights a further problem in that to be successful with this philosophy, there needs to be a good transitional phase between one generation of players and another. This means you need to have a number of players that are peaking or reaching maturity whilst at the same time bringing new young talent. So in bringing in Bellerin, Gibbs, Jenkinson, the likes of Van Persie, Fabregas, Walcott who are all mature players should be the leaders of the team guiding the younger players. What's happened however is that a lot of them have left. Part of the reason for this is the Real Madrid style philosophy that has affected the Premier League. It's chief representatives are Chelsea and City. It's always going to be a tall order to compete with clubs like this who are able to buy two world-class players for every position in a team. So there are wider cultural issues that are the cause of this. This is also evident with Man U who like Arsenal have reared a lot of young talent. But by bringing in Mourinho, it was clear that they abandoned this philosophy. More specific to Arsenal, I do think Wenger might be a bit of a control freak. A lot of this is to do with the broad and their conservative approach: favouring business over success. This has made Wenger overly controlling and blind to his football philosophy. I've always been surprised and suspicious that none of his older players are working for/ with him- i.e. that Veira is coaching Man City's second team rather than Arsenal's (compare this with Phil Neville and Giggs who worked under Van Gaal and Moyes). I think Wenger doesn't like to work with anyone who can challenge him. This is ultimately though the reason why his current team have no leaders. So I suppose he's brought about his own undoing. So a lot of this is more than a few fans being aggrieved. There are major cultural issues at play also.

Wenger looks like an intelligent but quiet and passive man. In a situation Arsenal are in now with no real leaders on the pitch he's left too much to do and simply cannot motivate his players. I used to laugh at comparisons with Sir Alex. In his last season he took an aging, some would say average side, and made them champions through his management and sheer will to win. No one wants to talk about the fact that we got 75 points that season, which is really impressive given the quality of several other teams in the league at the time. In other seasons that could be enough for a thrid or second place, but fans were just a bit tired of wenger that they didn't look at the context of the situation. It was probably his time to go, but we were quite an impressive team that year, and were even challenging for the title up until the game against Watford.

The thing is Wenger was an inspiration the first ten years at Arsenal from 1996 to 2006. However he started to lose his way after that. When he stated that top four was like winning a trophy and Selling Van Persie to Man United in 2012 that was it for me. He should have stood down when he and Arsenal won their first Major honour in nine years in 2014 when Arsenal won the FA Cup. And Qualified for the Champions League.
