West Burton and Kettlewell, Yorkshire Dales, UK 🇬🇧

West Burton is small village located in Bishopdale on the side valley of Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales. The village has rich history showing some evidence of Iron age settlement particularly on top of the nearby Burton Moor. Like other villages in the Yorkshire Dales, the houses in West Burton are also stone cottages decorated with plants and flowers.
From the village you can follow the sign to walk along Walden Beck to discover West Burton Falls, also known as Cauldron Falls due to the large amphitheatre like area around the falls. The famous British painter J.M.W Turner drew the falls during his Yorkshire tour in 1816, although the watercolour was never finished the sketch is now held by the Tate gallery.
One of the characteristics of the falls is the way in which the water fans out over the rocks to create a veil-like appearance, although we visited after some heavy rain therefore the water was very torrential and fast flowing. Due to the peaty soil of the surrounding area the water is often a yellowish brown colour, and this is typical of many of the rivers and becks in this area of the Yorkshire dales.
Kettlewell is a popular small village situated in Upper Wharfedale about 7 miles north of Grassington and 15 miles south of Hawes. There has been a settlement here since at least the Anglo-Saxon times however the village in it’s current form flourished over the last 200 years since the textiles and LED mining industries brought prosperity in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Today the village is a popular tourist destination due to it’s position on the Dales Way walking route and is a convenient starting point for walks up the hills of Great Whernside and Buckden Pike. Of course the beauty of the village itself is reason enough to visit and take a stroll through the pleasant streets.
