1st visit to Manchester Piccadilly on the Manchester Branch of the West Coast Main Line
Featuring services from Avanti West Coast, East Midlands Railway, Northern, Transpennine Express and Transport For Wales plus one Freighter
Manchester Piccadilly first opened back in 1842 firstly as Shore Street by the former Manchester and Birmingham Railway
It was renamed in 1847 to Manchester London Road before the Manchester, South Junction and Altrincham Railway began serving here in 1849 with a single platform which today the route which is part of the Castlefield Corridor occupied by through services on Platforms 13 and 14.
The station has been rebuilt and expanded several times since firstly in 1861 then again in 1881.
The present name of Manchester Piccadilly dates from being renamed and rebuilt in 1960 with its last major overhaul being in 2002 in time for the Commonwealth Games which were held in Manchester itself.
Platforms 1 - 13 are used by mixture of terminating services with Avanti West Coast to and from London Euston which are provided by Class 390 Pendolinos which first entered service on WCML as part of Virgin Trains in 2003 which as of filming was finishing up being refurbishment programme with it due to carry into service until 2040. Also their Class 221 Voyagers are being replaced by 5 car Class 805 Everos which entered service a few weeks after filming on June 2nd with the first 6 sets of 13 with the remainder to come later on.
The other 10 sets of 7 car Class 807 Everos will enter service later in the year still testing remains ongoing which will share services for Birmingham, Liverpool and Blackpool alongside the Class 390s to enable other Class 390 sets to work more Manchester and Scotland workings to Glasgow and Edinburgh.
CrossCountry services to and from Bournemouth as well as Paignton and Bristol Temple Meads provided by Class 220 and 221 Voyagers
Northern services mixture of diesel and electric with Electric services provided by Class 323s to and from Hadfield via Glossop, Class 331s terminate to and from Crewe via Wilmslow and Manchester Airport as well as services to and from Alderley Edge.
The DMU services provided that terminate at Manchester Piccadilly are provided to destinations such as Buxton, Hazel Grove and Rose Hill Marple
Through Electric services to and from Manchester Airport use Platform 13 and 14 to Liverpool Lime Street via Newton-le-Willows, Blackpool North via Preston and DMU services to Windermere and Barrow-in-Furness
Transport For Wales provide services to and from Carmarthen via Crewe and the Welsh Marches line via Shrewsbury to Cardiff Central, Milford Haven and Carmarthen as well as the Manchester Airport to Llandudno service via Newton-le-Willows, Warrington Bank Quay and Chester.
Class 197s and occasional loco hauled sets hauled by Class 67s as well as some Class 153s provide the services.
East Midlands Railway provide hourly services to and from Liverpool Lime Street to Nottingham, Ely and Norwich provided by Class 158 Sprinters and occasionally and only recently beginning to be provided by Class 170 Turbostars.
Transpennine Express provided by Class 185s and Class 397s as well as occasional Class 802 Novas with terminating services running to and from Hull via Huddersfield which on the day of filming were cutback to Huddersfield due engineering works on the Transpennine Route at Morley resulting reduced services diverted between Dewsbury and Leeds via Wakefield Kirkgate.
Cleethorpes services originate to and from Liverpool Lime Street operate via Warrington Central with Manchester to Scotland services via Bolton and Preston provided by Class 397s and 802s which use Platforms 14 and 15
Freight workings use the through platforms which run to and from Trafford Park to places such as London Gateway near Tilbury in Essex and Felixstowe North.
Manchester Piccadilly was originally proposed to serve HS2 however was scrapped in October 2023
The only underground platforms present is provided by the Manchester Metrolink which first began operating in 1992
Today services provided Bury, Altrincham, Rochdale, Eccles, East Didsbury with a total of 99 stops on its network making it one of the busiest light rail systems in the UK.
The trams are provided by Bombardier M5000s which replaced the original T68 and T68A sets between 2009 and 2014 which were built in Vienna, Austria and Bautsen, Germany.
Whilst its the 3rd busiest outside London behind Birmingham New Street and Leeds however congestion and delays can sometimes be inevitable whatever time of day
