West End ~ Triplets Get Their Names! Starting To Wingercise 🐥 🐥🐥Treasure (WE2) Is On A Roll! 4.21.24

The triplets of the West End nest have all received their names! The eldest eaglet has been named Koa. From the Nest Adopter who gave this eaglet its name "WE1 is the offspring of Akecheta and Thunder. Akecheta means "fighter" in Native American language. As the eldest triplet, WE1 will carry on its father's legacy as the protector. Koa is the Hawaiian word for warrior. Koa warriors served to protect lands, natural resources, and the ruling chiefs. They were seen as brave, bold, fearless, valiant & courageous."
The middle eaglet WE2 is named Treasure. The adopter says " Well, each of these eaglets is a treasure, and, with full respect to his/her siblings, I would like this one to carry that name: Treasure."
And the youngest eaglet WE3 has been named Sterling in honor of the adopter's late father.
The triplets are six weeks old and are changing in appearance daily! Treasure is seen trying to wingercise several times but as expected at this age is still very uncoordinated and loses its balance. Koa is watching and gets some wing action in its face as Treasure is hopping around the nest. The nest is getting smaller as the eaglets are getting bigger! In a few weeks it will be a mass of wings as they all try to exercise and flap them! Thank you for watching!

Nest info: Eaglets WE1, hatch 3/9 -3am; WE2, hatch 3/9 -7pm; WE3, 3/12 hatch by 4:10am; Thunder (F) 15 yrs old; Akecheta (M) (wing tag 61) 8 yrs old.
This eagle pair is a success story, part of a bald eagle restoration program started by the Institute for Wildlife Studies in 1980. Their nest has been active since 1991 and has been streaming live since 2005.

This Nest has quite a History of positive and negative Events. Thunder(Mom)is raising her 3rd set of Triplets to fledging--2 sets with Achet and one set with former partner(Superman). Her current Mate, Chet was an Unsteady New Dad for two Nest yrs--his actions leading to two Raven Egg scavaging nest yrs. But currently(like most New Dads given a second chance by their Mate) he has become an A+ Dad, mate and family man. Thunder is a super fertile Mom for egg laying nest yrs and a super Mom in the Upbringing dept as well-- Chet being an equal partner in maintaining a No Bonk, Perigrene F or Barn owl polite nestling demeanor among the clutch Eaglets. It will be interesting to see how this clutch goes thru the coming Teen period--during which Teen Eaglets will fight anyone over food brought in by Parents ,part of which is the Parents teaching mantling skills to their Eaglets for future Eagle life beyond Fledging. Undoubtedly also, part is from the Eaglet itself being--"Just that Age" for rebelling about anything involving a Parent. Other events were: an over the nest edge fall by one of the E's 2 yrs ago,needing a Rescue by Dr. Sharp and a Premature Fledge(by oldest E) by Hovering to a distant cliff spot and a 3 day return trip as that Eaglet did not know how to take off and land properly, two vital skills eagles need & learn thru "Branching".

lh2906--Oddly, Eaglets know their way around in, and the parameters of , their nest--- in daylight or darkness. In this early am IR light(Which Eagles can't see) I watched one of them(a larger one) get up and backward step to the edge of Nest and 'Let Loose' s PS and it was still a good E step or two from edge(which is precipitous). It may count steps to edge or have a different way to tell that's ingrained into Psyche. Nature really does give Eagles, young and old, many tools to navigate their Wild KIngdom.

The nest adopter gets to pick whatever name they feel is best - we have had regular names like Sterling and then non so regular names like Miss Cat! Hopefully the person who has the honor of selecting a name will take a lot into consideration. AK - Akecheta was given his name for his fighting spirit (Means Fighter in the Sioux language). There are way too many eagles named Hope Justice Liberty Peace etc anyway!
