West German Police Pistols - Walther P5, SIG Sauer P6, Heckler & Koch P7

In 1976, with criminal and terrorist activity on the rise the West German Federal Police launched a search for a new small, lightweight service pistol to replace their stocks of Walther P38/P1′s and various 7.65×17mm pistols.

The H&K P7 was an incredibly well designed pistol. This was one of the earliest pistol to use polygonal rifling and although the barrel was only 4.1 inches, it was as accurate as my Colt Python with a 6" barrel.

The P6 is best for the trigger guard alone. Much better for police wearing heavy gloves, like those walking around in cold weather or riding a motorcycle.

I'm super curious about the Mauser pistol entry. I believe there was a compact version of it as well. I'm always interested in post war Mauser firearms beyond their hunting boltaction rifles.

I own seven P5s, a pair of P6s, and a pair of P7s (M13). The P5s are my favorite by far. Three of the seven are shooters. A Lang and two 8th Variations (one in 9mm Para, and one with a 7.64 Para factory barrel that I came across on GB and purchased 😄). This allowed my Cat1062 Italian market twin barrel package to remain in unfired condition. Glad I came across that barrel before shooting a NIB +3 decades old 100% condition P5. The remaining four P5s (along with one P6 and one P7M13) are all safe queens. The P7 is a close 2nd in preference to the P5. The P6 is throughly disliked by all who fire the P5/P6/P7 back to back. We usually take three lanes when the trio come out to be shot. The P6 is QUICKLY replaced by a P5 once everyone has gotten to fire a few rounds the P6 platform. I'm currently considering having Tornado Technology add a threaded segment to the shooter 9mm Para barrel. Want to use my Rugged Obsidian can on a P5.
