My memories of the few games i attended in the 70s are of pretty hopeless policing. Also sometimes the incredible crushes on the terraces..leaving west broms ground with the away support ,the push to leave was scary. 'We are evil' chants from the back as the crowd pushed into a bottle neck.feet literally off the ground.

I and my mates went in the Chicken Run that day because it was one of times I went with my dad and we struggled to get into the South Bank owing to the queues. I remember the ground being packed to the rafters. There was an unbelievable atmosphere in the air that made these sort of games so addictive. The tension was heightened because of the number of Man U supporters there and showing their colours. Most of their fans were squashed into the corner of the South Bank nearest to us. We got news it went off outside the entrance & they were being followed in by West Ham fans. At no time did that corner settle and it was swaying to & throw from top to bottom & to side to side. You just knew it would be a matter of time before it would kick off! If I remember rightly it seemed to start from the middle entrance behind the goal were most of the West Ham fans stood and then there was an almighty surge forward from the back of the stand, above the Manchester fans. The fighting followed on and that's when a lot of the Mancs spilt onto the pitch. Only problem was they had nowhere to go because all the home fans wouldn't let them. The police had to make their way into the South Bank to make room for the fans to return. It seemed like there were West Ham everywhere. But my main memory was watching a spinning can full of beer, hit a copper right in the face. It hurt me then seeing that and it hurts me now thinking about it.

There was no ban on man united fans at this game. There was however tube strikes/disruptions that may have prevented a few more fans from coming. Although OB ordered turnstiles to shut about 2.30 with just under 39,000 inside. Upton Park capacity back then was 42,000. After this fixture, Man utd at Upton Park became all ticket.

I was 19 at the time - in the South Bank but at the other corner. The Police were targeting the United fans - anyone wearing a united scarf were being thrown out even if they were not involved. To avoid being chucked out we put our scarfs inside our jackets. At the final whistle we made our way out only to be confronted by fellow United fans, who had been chucked out earlier, out for revenge attacking W Ham fans. There were pockets of fights all the way back to Upton Pk station but we made it back. I don't recall any trouble whilst on the tube.

Policing, segregation and reporting was a joke that day. Firstly, there was no segregation. Reds fans were split up, by the police, and ended up in three or four sections of the ground. The main section was along the side where the players came out. I was in the end where most of the trouble was, but, luckily, in the left-hand corner. It was the more heavily populated (by Reds) right-hand corner that seen most of the trouble. There were 1,000 - 1,500 reds in that corner that were being constantly attacked from behind by, at least 3,000, West Ham fans . The police did nothing. The United fans had no option but to escape by going on the pitch - they were getting battered! They DID NOT invade the pitch - they had no choice because of crap segregation and policing. The newspapers carried large headlines of United fans invading the pitch - which just wasn't true. Later in the week, when the truth came out, there were much smaller stories confirming what had REALLY happened.
