It is so powerful for us to see these images. I'm sure it is painful for those who see their homes burning in the video, for those who were on the wrong sides of the lines. But there are so many lines around town: fences burned where backyards are spared, the whole street burned until one point, where I've just known those are the marks of all the firefighting. Each structure saved was an engine, a team, hosing it down, making a good choice on where it could stop, staying there until the embers stopped flying. Thank you. More videos like this, if possible; we see the aftermath and it is so healing to see the work that saved so much.

Are there things that homeowners can do to prevent fire, or make your lives easier in the case of a fire? I think I heard someone say that they made good use of regular garden hoses. Would keeping them available and connected, maybe wound up in a reel, be helpful if necessary?

You can help by doing wildfire mitigation around your home. The homes that were lost during the Marshall Fire were ignited by embers, carried by the wind. Those embers landed in gutters, where there were leaves and pine needles, in wood piles near homes, on patio or deck furniture, even in plastic trash cans near structures. One of the easiest things to do is to clean your gutters. Then, look at the first five feet from your home. Clear out vegetation and mulch. We did use garden hoses at some of the homes during the Marshall Fire, so keep a hose handy would help. But the biggest thing is to do what you can to make sure your home is safe. Here's a mitigation guide: wmfpdco1.specialdistrict.org/files/630234379/Ready+Set+Go+Brochure+2022_Final+for+print+9.13.pdf
