I was born and raised in Woodbury. The Friends Meeting House has a preeminent location in the city. The Woodbury Friends’ Meeting house was built in two stages, in 1715 and 1785. The meetinghouse has served Quakers in Woodbury since its construction, and stands as a reminder of the town’s Quaker founding in 1683 by Henry Wood. For the town’s first 100 years, it existed mainly as a rural, farming community. The British, led by General Cornwallis, camped in Woodbury during the Revolutionary War and used the Meetinghouse as a barracks and a field hospital.

I've read 'The History of New Jersey' Samuel Smith, 1765, several times the last 15 years. Samuel Jennings, Lt. Governor, who signed the constitution of West New Jersey on 25 November 1681, is one of my paternal ancestors. You've done a good job & I'll be subscribing. Speaker Samuel Jennings representing both the New Jersey & New York Assemblies delivered The Remonstrance to Lord Cornbury on 8 May 1707. He concluded with- "And we cannot but be uneasy, when we find by these new methods of government, our liberties and properties so much shaken, that no man can say he is master of either, but holds as tenant by courtesy and at will, and may be stripped of them at pleasure. Liberty is too valuable a thing to be easily parted with, and when such mean inducements procure such violent endeavors to tear it from us, we must take leave to say, they have neither heads, hearts, nor souls, that are not moved by the miseries of their country, and are not forward with their utmost power, lawfully to redress them.” Smith's History of New Jersey, 1765, Chapter XV, p. 295.

According to my former MIL who was part of the Onadaga Iroquois tribe. You couldn’t trust the Leni Lenape (sometimes referred to as the Delaware) as they were the tricksters and pranksters of Native Americans. “Dickon Among the Lenspes” by M.R. Harrington gives a little insight into Leni Lenape culture through the eyes of a young man that survived a shipwreck and adopted into the tribe.

I'm from South jersey and descended from early quaker stock. This was really great to see and learn that my people really did have their own thing going and their own peaceful arrangement with the Lenape. It makes me want to read the history books and see which of those 1400 were my people. It really solidifies the difference between north and south jersey, and it's amazing to learn that south or west jersey is older than Pennsylvania or Philadelphia. We really are our own place, aren't we.

@theotherstatesofamericahis5212 Oh 100%! it's thought of as North/ South Jersey, and generally as a New York v Philadelphia divide. That's why it's so thrilling to learn that West (South) Jersey is older than Pennsylvania. But the old border follows the line between Burlington and Ocean counties, which is defacto like between North/South. Different accents, (slightly) different foods. It's mostly been washed out by later waves of migration, and sadly, you'd be hard pressed to find any Lenape around today, but there are still old 17th century Quaker descendants like myself around. And of course lots of place names and old structures are still standing. Yeah, my people were the Salem meeting house.

As someone resident and with deep ancestry on both sides of the Delaware including West Jersey I thank you for making this video. I have always believed that "New Jersey should be split along the Province Line again and the West portion must be united with southeastern Pennsylvania (Philadelphia and all surrounding counties) and the Lower Three (Delaware, or at least just New Castle County) as one culturally cohesive state. Even today the cultural divide of the Province Line is reflected in elements such as phonology, dialect, food and sports team allegiances. 🦅

The Quakers had significant influence in the birth of our nation. In the Philadelphia Metropolitan Region (which includes South Jersey), they still have a noticeable presence. Not sure why anyone would take issue with you covering them. Unfortunately, two Presidents who have primarily negative legacies, Hoover and Nixon, were Quaker.

The Penn in Pennsylvania was inserted at Charles I's insistence as a tribute to Admiral Penn, not William Penn. The Admiral is the captain of the ship that brought Charles back to England prior to the restoration. The Penn family had long & strong tie to the Stuarts - William was a fervent Jacobite, loaning large sums of money to James II for his failed attempt to retake the throne. William Penn was charged with treason and his Irish estates and his Province were confiscated by William & Mary for two years while Penn either hid out in England and/or gained enough supporters to have the charges dropped and his estates restored - or rather, his right to govern & profit from them as the land itself was not confiscated, only the right to govern was. His travels to Germany was actually a trip to find one of the Stuart girls; the proselytizing was a side show.

All of Word's God is Truth! please let us remember Our Lord 's own Words (in the case of Anne Hutchinson) as recorded in a Matthew 24:35, "Jesus declares, 'Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.' ” therefore be careful when we use the word relic when referring to the New Testament Scriptures and women are to remain silent in the Churches! why, let's think about how God made women. women mostly response/react to their emotions and men react with less emotions which is why men and women complete each other to make a whole; but, nonetheless paul preached and taught that women are not to have authority over men. to the fact, when preaching, the preacher is given the authority, by Holy Scripture, having authority over the hearers.
