Instead of being frightened by new nuclear threats from Russia, the West has begun to openly laugh at Putin. German Defense Minister Pistorius responded with a bold and ironic tone during his visit to Vilniuson the changes to the nuclear doctrine announced by Russia, which Putin read from a piece of paper in front of his Security Council. Pistorius responded dismissively to a question about Putin's nuclear threats, saying his words were not even worth commenting on. Well-known Russian economic analyst and blogger Anatoly Nesmiyan emphasizes that leading politicians in the West are already beginning to openly laugh at Putin and his threats. According to him, laughing at an opponent is the most painful thing for Putin, since his words are no longer taken seriously by his opponents.

Earlier, Putin decided to make changes to the Russian nuclear doctrine due to the war in Ukraine. Putin has for the first time voiced proposals to change the Russian nuclear doctrine, which look like an attempt to justify the possible use of nuclear weapons in a war with Ukraine. Thus, the updated draft expands the category of countries and military alliances in relation to which the Kremlin intends to implement nuclear deterrence. Nuclear weapons may be used in response to information about a massive launch of air and space attack weapons against the Russian Federation, including drones and cruise missiles. A condition for a nuclear response will also be a "critical threat to Russia's sovereignty." What is meant by "critical threat" is not explained. In addition, the Russian Federation may use nuclear weapons in the event of aggression against Belarus.

There are multiple things to consider regarding Russian "nukes". Firstly, I have an observation, that a week without Russia threatening to nuke some country is seemingly a week lost. I've heard various Russian threats so many times that I guess I just desensitized myself to them. Secondly, Russia is not the only country with nukes. And using nukes to attack a country, which can retaliate (or its allies can retaliate, also with nukes) while your army is currently slowly bleeding out on an endless and pointless war and your country is far from being able to conduct military operations on more than one front (as we already saw) is... well, we can start from "pointless" and then just go further. Thirdly, Russia has conducted 4 rocket tests since start of this year and from all I know, all of them ended up in rockets exploding in the silos and reducing test sites to huge craters. This leads me to seriously thinking, if Russia: a) really has these nukes; b) if so, whether these nukes really work; c) whether they have a way of delivering those nukes to the target location without being destroyed (or spontaneously exploding) on the way there and d) is this delivery method reliable enough not to cause the missile to fall at a random spot and hit a different target or - even worse - your own territory. Knowing the extent of Russian propaganda I am honestly ready to believe, that those "missiles" carried during parades on 20+ wheeler trucks are simply huge, empty steel pipes painted olive. I have no proof for that of course, but I reached a point when I no longer consider such scenario completely impossible. I have hard time thinking why the hell Putin started this war in the first place. I reckon, there is no scenario in which Russia actually "wins", so to say. OK, let's assume for a moment that Ukraine will fall. Then Russia is left with more land, but also dying economy, a huge number of partisans ready to enter the former "mainland" and wreak havoc, a lot of their oil processing facilities has burnt down, economy is on the verge of collapse, sanctions most likely would be kept until Russia gets out of Ukraine and pay reparations and Russia wouldn't have enough firepower to enforce lifting sanctions other than threatening other countries with (theoretical) nukes, which - as we see - doesn't really work. This is a recipe for disaster.
