It's not a remake. It's another film version of the Broadway musical. Just like Baz Luhrman's Romeo+Juliet is not a remake of Zefirelli's Romeo and Juliet. The 1992 Dracula is not a remake of the 1931 Dracula. The "original" source being remade is not necessarily the preceding film, even though it may look like it and sound like it. A Star is Born is a remake. The Disney live-action films are remakes. That's not what this is.
@richellebrittain21273 жыл бұрын
A technicality in this case. They wrote a role specifically for Rita Moreno, Anita in the 1961 film -- and she's getting Oscar buzz for it right alongside the new Anita, Ariana DeBose. Just singing "Somewhere", the musical's most famous song, at almost 90 (the movie drops the day before her 90th birthday) may itself be worthy of another Oscar nomination.

Part of the location shooting was also done not only in NYC but also in East Los Angeles to capture a richer bi-coastal tableau of the Latino immigrant experience in America. Add these to the Latino actors portraying the Latino characters-and you get more authenticity than the ‘61 production.

Plus, the soundtrack for this one at least to me, didn't sound as good as the original up until I actually saw the film. I am glad to say that this film is as good as it was, because even the trailers are something I felt did this movie kind of wrong. I come to this review after having seen the film on its first night of release, 12/10/21. I’m 69 and saw the 1961 original within a week of its initial release. It changed my life. When I first heard Spielberg was re-making it, I thought it was a joke, something from The Onion. When I realized it was real, I was offended and determined to boycott the film, but curiosity got the better of me. I rejoice in saying I absolutely love this movie. It’s everything you say. I’ve only one tiny quibble with your review. This remake doesn’t cut a single one of the original songs. It does reorder some, but also reinstates part of the 2nd Act ballet music as underscoring for Maria’s hasty morning prep while A Boy Like That/I Have a Love is performed in full, a number the 1961 film shortens.

Dan. Really good review. I not the biggest WSS fan, particularly the original version (movie), I always disliked the actors adapting to ethnicity with make up. Also even when under 10 years old I couldn't take the "violence" inherent in gangs. And their turf wars. I also only believed in AMERICA and officer krupke. As songs. Now onto Spielberg version-he been saying since at least 1984 that remaking this was a passion project for him much as Schindler's list was. Spielberg projects are damned by critics if they work or fail, his name synonymous with hit after hit. As for the last 10 years I think Spielberg dipping in and out of projects he just likes the personal appeal of. Now back to WSS (Spielberg version) it outstanding superbly choreography, lighting and acting. America is still a showstopper and Spielberg/kushner wisely change murder weapon from knife to gun, just this tiny detail adds so much to inter racial gang fight. The violence feels imminent and the cast sell this , without labouring the point. The actors are superb across the board. A resounding success of spielberg

Living in New York in the 60s in the South Bronx it brought about a lot of memories as I remember playing stick ball in a dead end street, between several 6 story buildings and using the parked vehicle fenders and bumpers as baseball bases. The soft balls bouncing off the tall 6 story structures as we would run at full speed to catch the ball before it dropped to the floor, sometimes we would dangerously launching over obstacles to make the catch(DOM LOL) but fun. I want to give the movie a plus as there were no Spanish Captions on screen when the actors spoke in Spanish(WOW). The actors Latino NY PR cultural genre was of what I remember growing up hearing with friends and family, that almost made it feel a private joke for those in the audience like myself that spoke both English and Spanish and understood the comical language that was used at the time (60s and 70s). Saw it Friday with my 16 yo daughter in a theater with those big reclining seats. I handed her a bunch of napkins and said, "this is for the crying parts." And, oh, there are crying parts. We loved it! Smart, funny, sexy, joyous, tragic... It was visually stunning and, I think, even more relevant than ever. Ariana DeBose is the real stand-out for me, but everyone was fantastic. The songs have been on a loop in my head for three days.

I wouldn't really consider this a remake of the original film, but a second adaptation of Sondheim's Broadway stage musical.
@emb743 жыл бұрын
Odd that you call it “Sondheim's” musical. He only wrote the words. He’s a genius lyricist but the extraordinary music was Leonard Bernstein.

I hope that either Mike, Ariana, or Rachel get some type of award. All three of them were incredible. The emotion of all three of them and Ariana and Mike’s dancing was so satisfying to watch and Rachel’s vocals were off the charts.

Spielberg has said he based this on the play, not in any way based on the previous film adaptation. So, if musical numbers are omitted or if they are in a different order than the previous film that's because that wasn't his reference for this movie.

Thank you, Dan. I am an ENORMOUS fan of the original; I do think that it is a perfect film. When I heard it was being remade, I was genuinely angry. Why does everything need to be a remake? I was sure I was going to skip this one. But I admittedly think all of the trailers for it are great, and it does look good. But knowing that you - as a film and theater fan and really understanding where recent movie musicals have gone wrong - I think I’ll be taking myself on a movie date this Friday.
@MrBab12973 жыл бұрын
I was skeptical about this going in, but after finally seeing it, I think Spielberg handily outdoes the original in a variety of ways. Visually it’s on another level, and the music is incredibly composed. I also think the restructuring of the story works wonders for this film, dramatically-speaking.

Why did people doubt Spielberg still? If you look at bridge of spies and Lincoln they are more mature films than the majority of the films he made in his early career
@Weaponator183 жыл бұрын
I personally think people doubt Spielberg due to his last 3 movies (BFG is bad. The post is ok. I think ready player one is pretty good, but it wasn't the mega hit it should have been.) As well as the internet's general feeling of 'oh no, a remake of a beloved property. Its automatically terrible"
@c17sam903 жыл бұрын
@@Weaponator18 I didn’t think the BFG was that bad but the problem it has is that it’s a bit too English for its own good. The Post I remember liking but thinking that this is only going to appeal to people who like straight dramas and ready player one I enjoyed but I know it wasn’t high art it was stupid fun. I do think people think with Spielberg now if it isn’t breaking massive box office records it’s bad. And something like The Post was never going to be a massive hit and Ready Player One possibly should have been but I don’t know if the marketing sold a story. It just showed action.

I hope that a director of the stature of Speilberg making a musical and really bringing all his skill to to the endeavour, using not only top notch cinematography, but also really good choreography and most of all *performers that can SING and DANCE* as well as act will put a stop to the awful adaptations we've seen lately. I didn't think Les Mis was that bad, though it had its problems (I think Toby Hooper's direction being the biggest culprit).
@MariaVosa3 жыл бұрын
@@titanguy7316 The singing was often atrocious but not becuase of bad singers but his insistence of them doing it live (so stupid). And his unimaginative way of filning it hurt the experience. Yhat's why I'm happy a director of Spielberg's status is stepping in to raise the bar for future musical adaptations. This is how it's done! Not the Toby "I look down on musicals" Hopper way
@josephfisher4263 жыл бұрын
@@MariaVosa IMO some of the challenges with a musical Les Mis film are baked into and peculiar to *that* show. The story had to be made stagey to fit in the theater. Putting it back on film is like translating from French to English back to French. And then throw in the live performance... however, it didn't bother me nearly as much with that musical style as it would with almost anything else. The project was regarded as successful, though... The identity of the show that gets adapted matters a lot. Maybe few enough people have seen the products of the MGM musical machine that they can be profitable again?
