I am from West Virginia but from Clarksburg in North Central West Virginia.But McDowell County where Welch West Virginia is had a population of around 100,000 in 1950 which is now down to around 17,000 due to the decline of Coal mining,that's why you see so many abandoned buildings there. The opioid epidemic hit that area hard.

You nailed it. I have family who was born and raised in McDowell County, and my uncle mentioned that there are many struggling communities along Highway 52.

I was born in Fairmont W.V., and all I can remember as a young kid, 7-8 old years are how backwoods, small thinking, racist the people were. Sadly, that's the Memory that I was left with of Fairmont W.V. But a big shout out to my parents for moving us away. I'm well past the age mentioned, and it saddens me that this is the only memory I have. Thank you for sharing this!
