The West Virginia Penitentiary (WV-Pen) is not on an island but it might as well be. It definitely is in another world. I know it has been featured in some major movies. Anyone who can identify any of the buildings, rooms, cells, etc. in the video please feel free to comment. Normally I work to keep my videos under 10 minutes. But this place has an extensive history and demands more time. This video represents only small portion of the footage that I collected.
At Alcatraz the cells were bigger, the food was better, and no one was ever executed. Alcatraz was closed mainly due to rising costs. West Virginia Penitentiary was closed due to inhumane conditions which included torture of some prisoners. The tour guide informed me that one of the most time-consuming tasks in preparing meals for the prisoners was clearing out the cockroaches. At WV-Pen the 5x7 cells often housed more than one inmate.
Some the areas you will see in the video include:
...The North Yard - The most violent prisoners were locked up in maximum security adjacent to the North Yard where you can see razor wire around the recreation area. The so-called death house was in this area but was torn down. Still, hangings continued and it is believed these hangings were carried out in the North Yard Wagon Gate which you will see in the video.
...The South Yard - The Chapel is in this area.
...The Administration Building - In the early years the warden was required to live in the prison and his living quarters were on the top two floors of this building. Viewing this building from the back you can see a platform with a rust/red awning. This was to allow the warden to step out onto the platform and speak to the prisoners. The area below the administration is the boiler room.
...The maximum security lockup
...The Psych Ward
...The electric chair, called Old Sparky. The black mask that you see beside the electric chair was worn by any inmate being executed.
...The Chapel
The aerial video footage was created using my Phantom 2 Vision+ drone, and for the interior I used a GoPro Silver camera.

I lived in Moundsville until 1959.As a member of the M.H S Basketball. In 53-54 team we used to go in the prison on sundays after church and play the prison basketball team. What a memory! Use to go to all their baseball games. In winter time they had musical shows. You would have to live thru the expirences like I did to appreciate them. Clarence Gorby.

It's funny. My family was just there Monday. They tried to tell us no-one was hung there. Although we questioned that. I took a picture of a trap door (well it's the 1 in the video) but it had a noose hanging out of it.. Pretty cool place to visit, I would not have wanted to stay there. They said the prison was so full the cells had 3 people in them. There was a top & bottom bunk & 1 person slept on the floor.

I have toured the facility a number of times but the MTV Fear episode really gives a lot of the history. The "Sugar Shack" located on the bottom floor was the recreation area for inmates with only one entry, which the inmates were locked into and the guards remained on the outside of the room. So a lot of brutal fights and killings happened in there. The Penitentiary offers a midnight group tour that you have to be over 21, it's from midnight to morning and you are armed with only a flashlight... I'm too much of a chicken for that one.

Some people get scratched I tried It didnt happen. The hole is good and so is the Infirmary. I get alot of spiritbox up there. Not sure if you guys have experience with bigger locations and prisons. Thank you Renee. I appreciate your comments and totally agree with you. No doubt there are silly/mindless/cheap dog & cat videos with millions of views and likes. But something educational - oh my god - forget about it. Many of my videos consume significant resources in terms of money and time. And I make no money from the commercials that KZbin slaps on my videos. So there isn't much incentive to produce a video every month. Hopefully KZbin policies will evolve.

Actually used to live in Moundsville. Lived here up until I was about 11 or 12 when we moved to Stafford for business reasons. I toured here with my Nana once when I was younger and got to check out some jail cells and stuff. Don’t remember much of it now because I was only around seven or so. They also had this cool event thing or something when I was nine or ten, where you could go in through the west gate. I don’t really remember what it was, but inside there were a few cars on display and some dude taught me how to make balloon animals. Also, fun fact: the elementary school I went to is not far from this place. The church in the back with the reddish-orange roof around 5:09 is just about a block from it.

@@happyhelperandaparakeetlov2926 YESSSSSS!!! I describe it alot in my Moundsville posts on Instagram. amberlyn_0221 But it's heavy. It honestly still feels like it's still active. It's crazy heavy. Like hard to breath and it just sits there. There are floors that go up 4 stories and the space from the cell to the rail isnt more than 5 feet. Maybe less. I honestly thought that someone was just gonna run outta the cell and push me over the rail. I would even walk through doorways and feel like someone was just gonna run up on me and punch me. I actually caught a cool EVP where I walk through the doorway and I flinch. I stop and I say I thought someone was gonna hit me so I flinched, hmm must have thought I was gonna walk into the door or something. And right before I was through the doorway I get an EVP that says " HIT HER". I caught quit a few good EVPS from here. It definitly helps that im a female. Anyway If you wanna check them out it's on my channel under BEST of 2020

I agree! super haunted. I got so much evidence from that place and let me tell you. When we got done we went to leave at around 3 in the morning. N like you said some people live directly across from the prison. Well we wanted to check out the mount which is also directly across from there. So we go to the mound and we are taking pictures and I hear this noise. Like this squeaking noise. So I just kinda ignore it and after a few minutes we decide to head back to the car. Well all of sudden this guide on a squeaky bike comes flying out of this driveway and he starts chasing us back to our car. I have no clue what he doing at 3 in the morning, but I was not taking ANY chances. Needless to say he sacred the crap outta me.

It was featured as the pilot for MTV's show Fear. I toured it a good while ago. Our guide said that a few prisoners burned another alive in his cell, and the smell still lingered in the air. We weren't taken to that area, because I was with a school group. In 1992, a few inmates tunneled their way out and caused pandemonium. It's a very interesting place.

Tiffany Harris Your comment brings up an important point. I indicated in the opening video that 94 men had been executed by the State. But that does not include the number of inmates who were killed by other inmates. My guess is that number would be significant considering the number of riots. In the video you can see the boiler room below the administration building and this is where one inmate was beheaded and dismembered.

+kezzlewerkz That hill is Grave Creek Mound, an ancient burial mound of the Adena/Hopewell people, one of the largest of its type in the country and over 2,000 years old. A museum sits at its base. Inside, you will find the history of the people who built it/are buried there, artifacts, and recreations of what life was like for these folks back in their day. It's quite interesting, a sacred, spirit-rich place; ironic tho, considering the stone monstrosity looming at its base & the atrocities housed there.

Wow, so they tore the Sculpture of the Demonic Entity down. I lived in Glen Dale, WV in 2010 and there used to be this gigantic welded metal sculpture that sat on top of the building and it looked like a Huge demon made of metal.

between 7:18 and 7:28 on mine it changes but when you go into the boiler room or whatever it is after the tanks ...there is a shadow walks in the door way and it is very clear a dark mass has legs goes ...from my left to right and stays there when it pans back you see the legs still at the right side at the door opening..at first i thought it was you let me know if it is please

+twisterdar1(dar) This was a new location for me and I was not sure what to expect. I was mainly interested in the history of the place. I am not a big believer in ghosts but I do believe in science. The first law of thermodynamics tells us that energy is conserved - it might change form but you cannot destroy energy. So while I was not expecting spirits I will admit some of those areas made me a bit nervous as I walked through alone. None of the images are re-touched. What you see is exactly what I saw. In the boiler room I did not have a light with me. I got a bit nervous when I saw that shadow walking ... and I was only moving my camera arm at the time. That was when I decided it was time to leave. Perhaps someone walked past the open doorway. Later I was told there was torture and a brutal murder in that space.

+twisterdar1(dar) After reading your comments I decided to go back and look at the original footage in hopes of getting a clearer image and perhaps some audio. If the shadow was without a head then you would have convinced me it might be a ghost. Correct me if I am wrong . . .the inmate who was murdered down there was dismembered and beheaded. I am not wanting to sound morbid - it is what it is. As the camera in my hand pans left, the shadow walks to the right. There is no sound. I remember very clearly being unsettled because I was not moving except for the camera. Perhaps one of the maintenance staff walked past the open doorway. In any case, I'll just leave it as unexplained for now.

OMG thats so crazy! Maybe you should go and try to communicate with him. I know that sometimes even when people dont pass away in a specific location they do end up back at certain ones.
