I was in this prison wen it closed. Us inmates knew the jail was closing before the guards knew cuz the state was hiding it from the CO union. This place and another prison closed suddenly and they stuffed us in a brand newly built prison. The visit room u showed first was for solitary visits and that really bad decaying block was B-side of solitary. The shop room was actually dorms until the feds shut those down in 2012. They stayed empty after that. They renamed the blocks in the late 90s. So wat u thot was D was actually B. We had tvs with cable un our cells so noone fought over the tv lol. The first block u showed was D block. Each block in the jail had 2 sides, A and B. I left from D block A side. My name should be on that first board u showed cuz i was on the last set of buses that left that jail. Neway thanks for the vid. I enjoyed it

If you ever tour something like this, be careful a door doesn't close behind you and you get locked within. And make sure your phone is charged. I was touring the Weapons Storage Area of a closed air force base. The bunker door where nuclear weapons had been stored was open. It weights 4000 pounds. Death would be assumed if someone closed it behind me.

It was only in operation for about 50 years, not all that long. When you showed the plumbing behind the cells it was wrapped with asbestos. That type of asbestos is friable and is very dangerous, when disturbed heavy asbestos dust will come off it. Very difficult to deal with in a crowded tight area, that may have been a big factor in closing.

NYS just shut down a Max A prison in upstate NY known as Comstock. There were more guards and civilians in the joint than there were convicts. So now it's abandoned. Another in NY is Oneida correctional facility ( not to mistake it wirh the oneida County correctional facility - not a prison) a few prison in NY are former physiatric hospitals turned prisons in the 80s
@jesd.57459 күн бұрын
Ogdensburg Correctional, just closed is on bordering property of State Hospital (Psychiatric Center and Sexual Offender Treatment Program (SOTP). SLPC & SOTP are both still open. The other prison, directly across the highway from Ogdensburg Correctional (now closed) is, Riverview Correctional & that is still in operation today.
@macsdaddy33838 күн бұрын
So, they are shutting Oneida in Rome down? I had read an article recently that said NYS incarcerstion numbers had been dropping for years now quite a bit. I remember the NYDOC (Back then) buliding craze that took place in Oneida County. BTW, Oneida was converted from the former Rome Developmental Center. It was not a state run psychiatric center, like Marcy Psych down the road a ways was --- and which also was converted to medium security prison facility e.g. Marcy Correctional. Rome Developmental Center was a residential facility for institutionalized severe & profound mentally retarded and developmentally disabled individuals and run by NYS OMRDD. The whole de-institutionialization movement in the late 1970's and early 1980's is what led NYS to having all this excess realestate on its hands and was hitting at the same time crime wad flourishing downstate in NYC and the state needed more medium security prisions pronto. And, yes,...certainly not to be confused with OCJ !!

The city that owns it. 90% of buildings that are abandoned in the first 5+ years will keep the power on so that the pipes don't burst and flood the property. We've explored abandoned buildings that had power on and have been closed for over 30 years. The power is still left on because its linked to another building on the property that is still in use majority of the time.

so that prison has been abandoned for 11 years, still has running power and heat and is not making money? There has to be maintenance people working that building and plans to either get it back up and running or it hasn't been abandoned that long. With the amount if Illegal Immigrants/Asylum Seekers, a place like this would be a good place to house them, and keep them contained and tracked during the time they await their hearing to see if they qualify to remain here in the US. Also, they could earn their keep by renovating and repairing the place, to make it a livable situation for them and the next group coming to join them. Also a good place to educate the new occupants in speaking English and learning a trade to make it out in the working society if they are allowed to rem in in the US. Just a thought! Would love to know where this is located. As it would be a great conversation for public leaders to consider.

@@ackerjawaka1966 Unfortunately, i’m not one of the guys who think like this. I’ve mentored at prisons and I believe America has a very flawed system with an obsession for locking people up with an excessive amount of time because they profit off people being in prison and it doesn’t rehabilitate them, it’s setup to keep them coming back. Other countries treat have much better systems that treat them like human beings with very low successful rate of return but America doesn’t care about that because of people like you who have that mindset.
