I am retired now, but have been privileged to work on two geologic mapping projects in and around the gorge one lasted about two years and one took three. There was limited mining very near if not actually in the park boundaries in the 1970s. I collected coal samples in those mines. Oh, I also watched the bridge being built from the beginning to the dedication!

National River was more protected than the national park we got more min wage jobs created with a higher cost of living you did not think the common folk got a raise rich got richer just saying love my home its changed our park service is awesome just the same

Born in West Virginia my grandfather had a photo album of black & white pictures of the construction of the bridge. He would periodically drive out there & snap pictures.
