Your next trip you should take Rte. 60 to Fayetteville, if coming from Charleston. Or Rte 16 to Rte 60 from Fayetteville. Beautiful scenery and drive that's missed too much because everyone tends to stay on the Interstate. For one, you'll see where the New River and the Gauley River dumps into the Kanawha River. There's also waterfalls and just a beautiful drive.

One of the best times to visit New River Gorge National Park is in late October on "Bridge Day." The fall colors of the trees are beautiful.

Yes! We tried and due to increase in Covid that year, bridge day was cancelled almost last minute.

It may be the 2nd oldest river in the world with only the Nile being older I discovered when there several times. The Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad runs through the gorge and is where John Henry beat the steam hammer at Talcott, WV (not in the gorge).

Thanks, this was very interesting and helpful. We’re planning on visiting in spring 2024 with some elderly family members. So we’ll be a little limited as far as activities go. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Will definitely check out your coal mine video.

You can do some with elderly family members. Visit the bridge and the train station. Grand View is also easy to do from the parking lot and the waterfalls on the southern end of the park.

is there anywhere to swim on the river? where are the best little places to stay?
@JourneytoAllNationalParks Жыл бұрын
You can go rafting on the river, so anywhere safe (not at rapids). I don't know about places to stay. We stayed at an AirBnB. It was great but the location is too far from the main sights so I wouldn't recommend it.
@stubby2822 Жыл бұрын
There are many places to go swimming and campgrounds along the river. However, you really need to be a strong swimmer and be extra careful of undercurrents. The Indians called it the river of death for a reason. Plenty of Hotels in Beckley and surrounding area. Beckley is pretty much the central town for all of the areas of the park.

So what is your favorite and least favorite National Park?
@JourneytoAllNationalParks2 жыл бұрын
not counting the 4 I have not visited, #1 is Yellowstone. I have a few that could be least....not sure which ones. For one thing, I don't think Gateway Arch should be a "National Park". It's still fun to visit, just shouldn't be a flagship National Park.
@travis3032 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I wrote that comment long before you posted that video about your favorite national parks. That being said, I could guess that Yellowstone is your favorite. It's everybody's favorite. I guess except for mine. Screw that crowd. Maybe I put too much emphasis on crowds but that's just me. Completely ruins the experience. It has to at least be a factor, not just scenery, the entire experience has to be factored in and I don't go to national parks to be stuck in rush hour traffic like I'm in f'ing LA. If i wanted that I'd go to f'ing LA.
