I can t help thinking that practically any politician with reasonable showmanship would have beaten Trump, .She lost because she didnt take care of appearance with the email/the foundation/ the corporate donors, because she didnt inspire, because she never took any risks in the campaign and went for the PC attacks. Hell : Hillary s about to get as much vote as Obama and I dont believe for a second it was on her. It was mostly out of reject of Trump. And even among Trump voter there are plenty who really dont like some of his statements. They simply felt Hillary Clinton was completely out of touch. And that's a death kiss in politics. So I dont think there s need to pull a mary sue character like bartlett (he did get better later). Joe Biden, Bernie, etc... would have been more competitive...

***** Actually, I do know. Read it cover to cover, twice. (Except Revelations - that book is flat out fucking weird). The bible is a collection of stories and letters, written by we don't know who, or how many different authors, because we don't have *any* original copies, we don't even have original copies of the copies. Most of the book was "decided on" (by humans) and contain transcription errors or flat out changes made by copyists. What we do know is that the bible has been amended and changed thousands of times over the years. It is no more immortal than you are. Read "Misquoting Jesus" - written by a guy who loved the bible and his religion so much he learned ancient Greek, Aramaic and Latin so he could study the words in the actual language they were written in.
@Edcognito8 жыл бұрын
1) - the (alleged) most important book in the world is not meant to be read. Yeah, translating into the vernacular was the biggest mistake the monks ever made. 2) The "authorship" of many books *is* in dispute - and that is confirmed by linguists who have studied the various collections, throughout history, some books having multiple authors across time. Look up "Linguistics". 3)Textual Criticism was not "invented by liberals", you intellectual pipsqueak! Textual Criticism was invented by Monks, Priests, Rabbis and Nobel Historians, studying those tens of thousands of copies of copies of copies of copies and noticing differences between copies... And noticing differences between those written at various times and places. 4) If you want to *LEARN* what biblical Scholars (Religious and otherwise) *KNOW* about the bible, read Misquoting Jesus - but I know you won't, because you're afraid of unvarnished, objective truth. faithbibleonline.net/MiscDoctrine/TextualCriticismOfTheBible.htm Quite literally, you know not of which you speak.

For what it's worth the Martin Sheen speech is highly subjective and isolated. His references as well as the lady's he's talking to, are aimed specificly at the Jews of the time they were written, and do not pertain to Christians or even modern Jews. However, there are other passage in the New Testament which are against homosexuality. Plus this is a tv show, it's not a real live political debate. ·

Price Pittsburgh I know its not a real political debate. I do not watch the show but given that many use the arguments in the Old Testament against Christians (which I believe was implied in her character), he just gave her a taste of her medicine, regardless of how subjective the speech may have been. And to put the cherry on top...he delivers the final blow "In this building when the President stands, nobody sits."

You should watch the show. It's good all around.
@Price7010 жыл бұрын
My point is they assume the "Doctor" in such a situation would just sit there and not be able to defend herself. In real life if the Sheen character were to attack an actual Christian theologian or even just a well rounded Christian they would respond and not just sit there looking defeated, as this libreal show wants us to assume would happen if these arguments were presented to all Christians. Religion, like politics, has a defense on each side of the debate.

It has been stated that the Bible was written by God. It wasn't. It was written by MAN and edited by MAN by such things as the Counsel of Nicaea among others. All of this under the guise of being directed by the Holy Ghost or Spirit of God, the Holy Ghost itself being a notion of the Bible. So in the end we have a book that uses itself to prove itself. That is the argument of the psychotic and is perfect in form as it is designed to allow no avenue for dispute.
@valen1234569 жыл бұрын
George Miller If you imagine that religions evolve and adapt over time (and like anything created by a living thing they have too) then you could think of that type of argument as the ultimate form of "immune" response to any rational thought that might eventually undermine it. Literally a line of thought that while projecting a form of "reason-ability", is also so curled up on itself that no other form of rational or reasonable argument can get through. That does not mean that it can actually win anything, despite what those holding it can think, it is locked in a loop and will eventually die out via isolation, but not without a fight and leaving lots of collateral effects both positive and negative.

***** No one has the slightest physical evidence to support a historical Jesus; no artifacts, dwelling, works of carpentry, or self-written manuscripts. All claims about Jesus derive from writings of other people. There occurs no contemporary Roman record that shows Pontius Pilate executing a man named Jesus. Devastating to historians, there occurs not a singlecontemporary writing that mentions Jesus. All documents about Jesus came well after the life of the alleged Jesus from either: unknown authors, people who had never met an earthly Jesus, or from fraudulent, mythical or allegorical writings. Although one can argue that many of these writings come from fraud or interpolations, I will use the information and dates to show that even if these sources did not come from interpolations, they could still not serve as reliable evidence for a historical Jesus, simply because all sources about Jesus derive from hearsay accounts. Hearsay means information derived from other people rather than on a witness' own knowledge. It's all scapegoating, which is a relic of a very ignorant and superstitious past. To think that so very many in society in the 21st Century still believe that their god would not only approve of this method of relieving "sin" but actually be a "scapegoat" himself is mind-boggling.

***** Unlike Jesus, there is evidence for the existence of George Washington, Nepolian, and evolution that is independent of belief and perception since we're being honest. If the bible has to be understood in the cultural context of the times it was written how do you asses which parts are still applicable and which parts aren't? The religious always argue that religion provides clear and objective answers to moral and ethical questions and yet you have to know how to interpret the bible to fit with the relative moral climate of the times you live in. How do you know it's ok to eat shrimp now but homosexuality is still wrong? Shrimps actually get more mentions than homosexuality.
@AdvocateSpirit9 жыл бұрын
I don't think shrimps do get more mention (even if they do that's fine, just one mention of anything will do) but they definitely don't get more mention than sexuality. It is a book...all books must be understood by the writer's point of view. This writer happens to be God, we gotta have more sense than what feels common to us to understand a book claiming to be God's. (I'm not angry or anything, I'm just stressing my point) It is not that it must be understood in the cultural context of the time , it is that it must be understood; 1. Who God was speaking to 2. For what purpose was He speaking to them I'm not religious tho (and it does not change with the relative moral climate)...
@fiveredpears9 жыл бұрын
Troy Blackman Tell me what investigations I could do that could independently verify that the Bible is the word of God? What evidence have you got?
@AdvocateSpirit9 жыл бұрын
fiveredpears Is this related to anything you said or have you just been holding this in for the next Christian that crosses your path lol? You could research the fruits of it, whether the teachings that came from it were on point morally and made good changes. You can research if the claims are true, check the prophecies, they claim to know future events, check that out...see if they came to pass or if they seem to be accurate in the direction things are going in Check for what you would see as an un-bias opinion where the same account was given about an event. It is unrefuted that the bible was written over a massive span of time, so you can independently check if there are contradictions where one person agreed on something different Last but not least, spiritually check the claims that are made personally...and also check the description given of the human condition and see if that matches up to what you know I didn't quite get your questions tho ! Proof without a connection to the bible? Or just biblical things that can be verified personally by you that will show something is unique with it?

Love this. Just to clarify on one point, though a football is often referred to as a "pigskin", it was only the inner layer that was made of a pig's bladder that was used (well over 100 years ago) for it's property of holding in the air when the stem was tied off. Ever since introduction of a rubber bladder, there have been no pork products used in the manufacturing of footballs. The outer covering has always been made of cowhide. So in reality the players would hardly touch actual pigskin except where the valve stem was for inflating the ball.

The act of selectively choosing or emphasizing certain aspects of information, such as religious texts, to support pre-existing beliefs while ignoring or downplaying other parts is commonly referred to as "cherry-picking" or "confirmation bias." Confirmation bias is the tendency to favor information that confirms one's pre-existing beliefs or values. In the context of interpreting religious texts, cherry-picking occurs when individuals selectively highlight passages that align with their views while overlooking or dismissing passages that may challenge or contradict those views. This approach can be a form of cognitive bias, influencing how people perceive and interpret information to maintain consistency with their existing beliefs.

If you're going to follow what the Bible says, follow what the Bible says. Otherwise, just throw out the whole thing, cause if you can just skip out on parts you don't like, why not skip out on the whole thing?

So we can keep slaves if we like? and sell our children into slavery for money? Can we order our wives to have sex with us when ever we want- like slaves? Absolute adherence to the Bible is impossible because the bible contradicts itself both in fact and in doctrine. It was never intended to be followed literally, which is why the early church left the gospels intact and made no alterations.

Elyssia White Oh yes USA is! The founding fathers HAD TO give lip service to religious fanatics then, much as politicians do today but to a lesser degree today. There's NO WAY America could function as a christian nation. Can you imagine the logistics & fighting that would go on trying to institute the bible into the constitution etc...?!?! Stonings in the town square for unruly children & non virgin wives??? hello??? Yes there were some aspects of the bible that were used by ppl to control others like slavery etc... for money, cheap work force etc... but America certainly is NOT a fundamentalist country!
@mooncalf_45349 жыл бұрын
Sleekcartim .sleekcartim Technically you're right, of course. It just seems like America's so far behind in removing the power of religion compared to other first world countries. You only just legalized gay marriage... The good news is America's moving quite quickly at the moment, unlike shitty England.

Elyssia White The religious right are in shear desperation to force their will on us, they never get used to losing to the buzzsaw (the US constitution). They have money & an agenda that tries VERY hard to fit a round peg in square hole over & over.... Its the very definition of insanity. This sanity has a name religious hysteria, there is NO cure & NO capacity to learn. I would say theres a certain group of religious right leaders who lead their "flock" into thinking theres a chance their agenda will work...eventually, so give till it hurt$$$$! Always follow the MONEY esp in murika!

@ruths.rosenberg58908 жыл бұрын
Because it is a fairy-tale story about vengeance, child abuse, monsters and war as told by superstitious entertainers to keep their flock subjected to their religious will.
@inwalters7 жыл бұрын
There are no "versions" of the Bible. There are only very minor copying errors that crept in since it had to be hand copied for 1500 years before the invention of printing.
@troyevitt24376 жыл бұрын
Serious Answer: Intellectual Property and Copyright laws. New commentary, new concordances, new Bible study guides/devotionals and even new secular historical/archeological discoveries are what contribute to the proprietary content of "new Bibles". The King James Version has long since become a "Public Domain" publication, along with Shakespeare and the sheet music of Classical/Chamber music of that era.
@MaestroRigale5 жыл бұрын
Ivan Walters Sure there are versions of the Bible. Different denominations disagree on the inclusion or exclusion of various books of the Bible, or on the content of the same books. And I’m not just talking about minor translation differences, but on actual events, people, and stories included.

I remember when I was young, this one scene taught me so much. To truly defeat your enemy, you need to know everything about them. Every detail, every element. So every time I encountered a homophobic religion, I read their scriptures from cover to cover. Learned every rule, every passage. And when confronted by these bigots, I'd literally shove their own rules down their throats.

No....in reality this applies to anyone whom picks specific sections from the Bible to justify their personal actions, while ignoring other parts of the Bible that they disagree with. It's textbook hypocrisy. As this scene from the show clearly illustrates.

How Dr. Jacobs should have responded: 'Mr. President, with all due respect, if you would have invested 5 minutes of research time to read a decent catechism, you would have noticed that the judicial and the ceremonial laws of Israel are no longer binding under the New Covenant established by Christ. Jesus, for example, "declared all foods clean" (Mark 7,19). Eating pork or shellfish or touching a football is no longer a problem, for those laws were originally given to separate ancient Israel from its heathen neighbours until the time of the Messiah. And unlike the OT theocracy of Israel, the Church no longer is a single nation, but consists of people "from every tribe and language and people and nation" (Rev 5,9). The penal laws of OT Israel therefore bind no one today. Instead it says in the NT: "Let every person be subject to the governing authorities" (Rom 13,1). But: "The moral law doth for ever bind all, as well justified persons as others, to the obedience thereof, and that not only in regard of the matter contained in it, but also in respect of the authority of God the Creator, who gave it; neither doth Christ in the Gospel any way dissolve, but much strengthen this obligation." Befor you try to expose me next time, I recommend you to check the facts beforehand. Otherwise you will make a fool out of yourself - again!'
@TimotheosCauvin9 жыл бұрын
I didn't say that "all of Leviticus' laws are defunct". I said that the judicial and ceremonial laws no longer apply, while "the moral law doth for ever bind all". The prohibitions of practiced homosexuality, incest, beastiality etc. are part of the moral law. Therefore it says in the New Testament: " Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, *nor men who practice homosexuality*, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God" (1Cor 6,9).
@TimotheosCauvin9 жыл бұрын
I never caused a war. Nor do I hate homosexuals. I have gay brothers and sisters in Christ who live a celibate life, and I have gay friends who live in civil partnerships. I treat both groups with love and respect, even though I earnestly believe, that the first have chosen the better, more godly path. Neither do I believe myself to be any better than my homosexual fellows. It says in the NT that "* all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God*, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus" (Rom 323,24)
@mortyjames58979 жыл бұрын
TimotheosCauvin Is your only reasoning for believing that being gay is wrong because Leviticus said so? the same man who believed people should be stoned to death for working on a Sunday? I still fail to understand how your morals are logical in any way. You think being gay is wrong. ok. 2 men loving each other is a sin. fine. Joshua sacking the city of Jericho and murdering all the inhabitants regardless of age or gender. Christian hero?
@TimotheosCauvin9 жыл бұрын
The Greek word is *ἀρσενοκοῖται* (arsenokoitai) and it literally means "A man who lies (i.e. has intercourse) with men". It's a composite word Paul built from the Greek words used in the Septuagint version of Lev 18,22 and Lev 20,13. Hope that helps.
@TimotheosCauvin9 жыл бұрын
First of all, the translations differ in wording not in content or meaning. Whether we say 'fornicators' or 'the sexual immoral' or 'people who have sex outside of marriage' is a mere matter of epoch, style, and/or audience. The direction of impact of the text is clear nevertheless. The same is true for the term 'arsenokoitai'. Whether you translate it as 'sodomites', 'men who sleep with males' or 'men who practice homosexuality', the prohibition is clear: Don't have gay sex! You see, it's not a matter of translation per se, but of choice of words. But if you want to serioulsy check any translation you will have to learn the language for yourself.

I don't know how many of you are aware of this, but Aaron Sorkin wrote this scene based on the "Dr. Laura letter," which became a viral email in 2000. He didn't know who had actually written it, but used it in his script, figuring the author might come forward after it was aired. Having been the author, I did, and the result was that Lorimar Productions paid me (an undisclosed amount). To those of you who have praised the satire herein, I'm flattered, but I'm hardly the first to do this sort of thing. Clarence Darrow used the same technique to dismember William Jennings Bryan in the "Scopes monkey trial."
@inwalters7 жыл бұрын
If true: How she should have responded - In the book of Acts, the Apostles discussed the question of what parts of the Jewish law Christians had to follow. after praying they got their answer and sent out a letter to the Church that said in Acts 15: 28-29 "It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements: You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality. You will do well to avoid these things." So Christians don't have to follow ant other parts of the Jewish which might have been appropriate for their situation, but aren't for ours. So quit cherry picking and making a fool of yourself.

So do I have to burn her at the stake and bean her with stones while she burns, or can I save time and cover some rocks with tar, light them ablaze and THEN throw them at her? I could use some advice guys.
