Night fishing for sea trout is perhaps the most exciting way to catch this most enigmatic of fish. Sea trout, often known as peal in the Westcountry, are basically brown trout that decide to go out to sea to live much of their lives. There are a number of theories on why some trout decide to do this and research is ongoing in an attempt to better understand this fish. What we do know is that they can put on weight fast and return as bars of silver muscle either as sea trout proper, fish of 2lb or more that have been out to sea for somewhile (or in and out repeatedly), or as schoolies. Schoolies, often known as School Peal, are young fish that headed out to see around April time and return in the same year anytime from June at a size of anything between 3/4lb to 2lb. Further info on fishing for Peal can be found at www.westcountryangling.com/sea_trout_fishing_info.php, with important safety information atwww.westcountryangling.com/ind....
These virtual fishing guides, know as iGhillie guides, provide some invaluable insider tips to some of the beats available on our Westcountry Angling Passport scheme. Dave Chapman, Angling Development Officer at the Westcountry Rivers Trust, says, “We have created 10 short film clips with each film following a ghillie around a beat. The ghillie will discuss how best to approach the beat in question, the best techniques to use and the main areas to concentrate on. The aim is to give prospective anglers the feel for a beat and some confidence in how to get the best of the fishing available."

Fantastic instructive video on what can be a tricky and dangerous pursuit if you are not prepared as he correctly pointed out.I loved the simplicity and the mild mannered way in which this priceless information was conveyed.I would love to fish the Torridge again but it's quite a distance from my home in Scotland!!Great video well done.

My thoughts exactly, but a read of Sea Trout Fishing by Hugh Falkus might help to put a few more fish in his bag.

Tom Harries Well in a way I think he was right. Or was he? Some nights just a small flash of light can mess up the fishing for the night,or even longer. And there again the best nights fishing I had was on a cloudy night and full moon. Every time the cloud cleared and the moon came out ,I caught a fish best one that night 16pounds

Great video. Wish we could fish at night. I've heard that salmon and trout feed in rivers at night?

Interesting what you say about rods, but I have been told seatrout have softer mouths, secondly the modern faster stiffer actioned rods are not really suited blind night fishing. What would you recommend because trying to find a good middle to tip rod is few and far between as every one seems hooked casting to the horizon on still water, trying to emulate what they see and read in magazines.Great video.

neil mason I have been night fishing for seatrout for 50 years now. I use an 11 ft rod with a very soft action. The rod was made for me, it will cast a 4 to 7 line Works fantastic with a sink tip 6. Yes the softer the rod, the more fish you hook. Also my reel is mounted the correct way round for a right hander cast, not the same as the video ( you can always tell a converted still water fisherman,by the way he mount's his reel.

Yes, you do need a softer rod than most on offer today. I have Orvis Helios ten footers in weights 4-7, but they're far too fast for sewin. Sharpes' offerings are more medium actioned, or I bought a cheap Shakespeare rod that's just like an old glass rod, dead slow. Forty quid well spent!

You're reel's round the wrong way for a right hand cast. This is a good way to detect a still water fisherman

I've never bought into that, and neither have the Americans. Forty years of fishing that way, with no problems- why would you want to swap hands to reel in??

@@barlow2976 Nor have the canadians, or anyone else including the spinning reel industry. You cast with your right and reel with your left if your right handed. Reeling is the least important job and you use your dominant right to cast with... Ive never seen anyone else fishing that way unless its there first trips to the river

@@MichaelPhillips-jw4bj up to you. But the traditional way is to be able to control the reel (on the rim) With the right hand. Also when casting the loose line is able to pass across the back of the reel without catching the handle. That's the reason that most fly reels From good English manufacturers came set up like that. The introduction of still water trout Changed a lot of things. Spinning is another type Of sport. I have fished for sea trout , sewin, for over 50.years, in a west country river, and things Change, but I must say the old school seem to still have more success than the still water fisherman, who is trying to graduate to the very Cream of fishing.

Probable reason why it's best not chasing round after ones shown is that you've disturbed it and moved it of its lie..as for hugh Faulkes personal a lot of his books nonsense put it in the bin
