Yeah, my uncle is a retired Captain from Continental Airlines on the 737. He was also one of very first pilots to get trained on the 777, when that aircraft came out. Before that he was a fighter pilot in the Air Force. He has always said that improvements to aircraft technology and automation can be a good thing or a pilot's worst nightmare. He said training these days focuses too much on learning how to "baby sit" the controls, instead of learning to manually control the aircraft. Heck, there are tons of accidents in aviation history where a pilot had to switch to manual flight, when the auto pilot disengaged. They couldn't respond to the emergency efficiently.

This was the first DC-10 crash to occur after Flight 191 (the worst single airplane crash in U.S. aviation history) which itself was one of three deadly DC-10 crashes where there were zero survivors in the 1970s. There were actually a few survivors of this crash, mainly people sitting in tail section. One of the people killed in this crash was a reporter flying to Mexico City to do a story who was scared to death of flying on DC-10's (he had covered the aftermath of flight 191 at O Hare in Chicago in May 1979, 5 months before this crash). This was the only flight he could get, and sadly his fears were realized and he died on a DC-10.

What's crazy is that if they had just attempted to land despite the vehicles on the runway, they probably would've survived with minimal injuries. They continued giving the plane power & trying to get it up even after hitting a truck, not knowing that the impact significantly damaged the aircraft & forced it to lean right, sealing their fate.
@allanbenoit83052 жыл бұрын
I was thinking that myself. What if they just didn't try to do a touch and go. Also, what if there were no vehicles on the runway? Would then they have a chance of survival? This is terribly sad! I hope they felt nothing and just went in peace.
@djm552 жыл бұрын
I think you're probably right, if they had lined up on the wrong runway and had just tried to land, perhaps more people would have been saved, notwithstanding the collision. I think the initial impact with the heavy vehicle on the runway sheared off the landing gear, which then flew back and obliterated the horizontal stabilizer. They lost directional control at that point, and were just along for the ride. How horrible it must have been in the cockpit, basically seeing yourselves flying toward a wall and knowing there's nothing you could do about it. The screams are beyond understandable.
@gervanwilliams14092 жыл бұрын
You can ask the same question about botched takeoffs at Decision speed: “why not abort the takeoff?” The answer is that what you don’t know can’t help you when making decisions. Going back into the air could potentially give them time to assess the situation and get help. Remember, when they realized it was the wrong runway, they attempted to take off again and that’s when they hit the first truck. They started to reconfigure for a go-around, so landing again wasn’t possible. These planes are not fighter jets. Reaction time on these planes are slow.

I'm sure she went quickly but being burned to death is horrific. That's why they needed her dental records it was on Halloween and her day off but she one called in sick so the airlines called her in since she was head stewardess she say close to the front behind the captain area. That was when the friar collision hit the dump truck on runway under construction most of the people towards the front of the dc9 got burned. Love you SS.

That scream is a ” death scream” how hard you try, you cannot make that sound unless you are dying. Its in our genetics. In swedish we call it ” dödsångest” wich translate to ” scared to death” and its a primal sound. Animals do the same. Have heard it three times in my life. Its a terror to hear

@@klocknerdeutz Always thought it sounded like the gear horn, but it's really hard to tell since this tape was apparently not recorded in a linear fashion. Very possible that it's the radio altimeter too, like you suggested. The NTSB's case study said the tape was very damaged and partially erased, so this audio is just the portions of the tape that were actually useful spliced together. Makes it hard to tell if that alarm tone is continuous or if it's two distinct tones as the recording seems to convey. You can tell there are lapses in continuity just by looking at the length of the recording and comparing it to the actual elapsed time between the collision and the impact as recorded by the FDR, this tape is much shorter (FDR indicates the sequence was roughly 26 seconds, and this recording is 15 seconds)

@deltaMurdoch2 жыл бұрын
This is the DC-10's gear configuration warning horn. Almost definitely went off due to the separation of the right MLG from the aircraft upon impacting the truck. You can hear the gear horn at the 25 second mark of this UAL232 CVR recording as well: kzbin.info/www/bejne/enrQlJmQasSiZ68

How was there a “first impact”? Wouldn’t that be the only impact? Unless they weren’t descending that quickly?
@Cal-Valhalla2 жыл бұрын
There was a truck accidentally parked on the runway. it was dense fog so they didn’t initially spot it. So after they collided with the truck they pulled up on the throttle and tried to ascend again, which incidentally is what led to the crash. If they had just emergency landed after hitting the truck, they most likely would’ve all survived.
@kurtstark9966 Жыл бұрын
first impact landin gear with a truck... enough force to brake the big truck to just debries, this caused to a stabalizer damage (little "wings" around the tail plane).. they werre already trying to abot the landing when they hited the truck so there was no safe way to land before that... the thrust gave the plane increasing speed but with a damaged stabilizer the plane banked and struck another truch with the tip of the wings , then it was uncontrolable this lead to the final impact and crash
