Mitch, thank you for this video. I've seen many on hand sawing techniques but you covered it all including some new tips that I haven't seen before. I also want to complement you on the previous video when you advocated using both Western and Japanese style saws. Up until then for some reason I thought one needed to commit to primarily one, possibly due to the ongoing controversy over them, similar to the Mac vs PC arguments. Definitely an "aha" moment for me.

Cheers Kris, There are pros and cons with both western and Japanese - subject for a future episode - but thankfully both are far less complicated than personal computers and their operating systems!

Nice video, Mitch. You have very well explained the handling of the western saws. You took wax, I got used to it. Turn my saws off with oil, Just as I had seen in Paul Sellers' videos.

Thanks Gunter. I wipe with oil to protect from rust, and wax for lubrication when required.

I appreciate the level of detail used in describing these saws and their applications. I attempted to follow the link to your site for more information on saws, but received a 404 error message.

How often do you sharpen your saws?
@getintowoodwork7 жыл бұрын
Slightly less often than they need is probably the honest answer! Occasionally I have some spare time and will go through all my edge tools, checking and sharpening as necessary. More often though, I will notice the performance starting to drop off, and I'll set the saw aside to do at a natural break point. In most cases I have a fall-back and don't need to sharpen immediately. Setting up to sharpen saws, sharpening, and clearing up, takes enough time to break my rhythm, whereas I'll happily strop a chisel each time I pick it from the rack.
