It is amazing that even back in the 50's Oakland was a dumpster then, I barely remember the Hayward Station before it was torn down and the Hayward Bart Station was built there.

This is a great video. As a train lover...in 2018 I took the California Zephyr from Martinez, CA. all the way to Chicago. I had a roomette and was onboard for around 57 hrs. (3 days and 2 nights). I went solo and highly...HIGHLY recommend a roomette instead of coach.

I rode the original CZ between Chicago and Oakland. It was simply a memorable experienced on a train that will never exist again.

Wow, cats you were one lucky person. Do you remember the food in the Dining Car? It always looked delightful!

I rode it in 1962 as a 15 year old. Dining car was comparable to the 20th Century Ltd of that year. Dad was Exec VP of the NYC, so this trip was on a reciprocal pass

@@charlessmileyvideos Unfortunately, no. You see, I was from the NYC area I was accustomed to single level trains. I was mesmerized and overwhelmed by the dome cars. I think I spent more time in a dome car front seat playing engineer than I did in my coach seat. I also rode the original Denver Zephyr. Another memorable trip on a great train that will never return,

@@philhoffman3417 You must be my age . . . . but you were one very fortunate person back then. I hope all is well and the memories pleasant.

Here is the wierd observation. US transcontinental trains were half the size of Canadian transcontinental but Canada has 1/10 of the population size compared to the US. And both countries went through the same kind of changes.
