I put together an old redwood kit that had been sitting in my dads basement for 27 years. It holds water and works great. Even though modern tubs have a lot of features and are easier to maintain the feeling of a wood tub is hard to beat.

You can make one of these as modern as any self contained unit, if you have the cheese to make it happen. We’ve done, wifi, multiple pumps, ionizers, lights, massage therapy, ozone systems, hydroxyl systems, etc.

does this construction depend on the staves and base boards swelling to make a watertight joint? Even barrel makers use rushes to make a gasket. Did you use any glue?
@dairylict4 жыл бұрын
The cut for these is so precision sometimes there’s only minor dripping in the beginning until they swell and seal tight within a day. Mariners epoxy is rarely used only at the crux if there is a stubborn/persistent leak.

question: How well will this last in the weather? I assume that it'll last a long time, but what type of maintenance do you have to do on the wood itself?
@SullivanWaterworksOakland7 жыл бұрын
You only really need to make sure that dirt and debris aren't allowed to rest against the wood for prolonged periods of time, because that will start the rot process. So, keep the wood clean and clear of anything like that, making sure there's plenty of air flow around it, and don't destroy the inside with to much chlorine. That should do it. They can last up to 40 years.

Hi from Costa Rica 👋🏾 how do u keep the wood out of molding and how u maintenance the wooded bathtub?
@SullivanWaterworksOakland7 жыл бұрын
Hi! Yeah, mold is a problem in Costa Rica, but here it is really dry comparatively. As long as you make sure the installation leaves the wood with plenty of air flow, you can avoid mold for the most part. For the water maintenance, I like to install silver/copper/zinc alloy ionizers. They do the sanitizing, then just a little ph balance weekly and an oxidizer to keep the odor and slime under control. Oh, and cleaning the filter with a high pressure nozzle on a garden hose every month or so. I like to install big filters so you don't have to clean it so often.

No one but me will ever appreciate the cost and effort that took. And how the water and oxidizer/chlorine will quickly ruin the wood. And how an uninsulated pump and filter system can only be run in warm temps when you really don't want to use a hot tub.
@SullivanWaterworksOakland6 жыл бұрын
cryptocoinscafe Yeah, chlorine is bad for the wood. If you over chlorinate a wood tub it breaks the grain apart and bleached it. Looks like white hair growing inside. I like to install ionizers so you don’t need chlorine. Not sure what you mean about the pump though. It very rarely gets below freezing here, but Pentair makes some very durable pumps that should work in freezing temps. ‘Freeze control’ is key. The pump will kick on if the water gets close to freezing.
@artglick32454 жыл бұрын
No one appreciates the damage that chlorine can do to the wood except everyone that's ever sold or owned a wooden tub. Most have the sense to use a metal ionizer so that they don't have to use chlorine. Ionizers work great on acrylic spas and swimming pools, too. They are the only accepted method for eliminating chlorine, but they are the best kept secret in the industry because no one wants to give up the revenue they earn on chlorine sales.

how doesnt wthe wood spaces leak plz answer, do you just clamp them tightly our use potty between them?
@SullivanWaterworksOakland7 жыл бұрын
The trick is to get it together tightly enough to retain water (NO GAPS). Use a dead blow "mini sledge" type of hammer to tap them onto the floor piece. The wood swells up in a couple days to seal the leaks, IF you get it tight enough.
@ladyskywalker9673 жыл бұрын
I was told to avoid placing the pump/heater equipment much above the tub's foundation level, since this can lead to draining and air lock problems. How did you fix this issue?
@dairylict3 жыл бұрын
Use a a check valve, or one way valve, on the suction side. This will keep water from flowing out of the equipment and back into the tub. This is useful when servicing the filter/equipment as well. Generally, (without a check valve) if the water is draining back into the tub, it means there’s a leak at the equipment somewhere. Otherwise, the water stays in the equipment, because there is no air allowed into the system to displace the water. Like holding your finger over the top of a straw and drawing the straw out of the glass, the water will stay in the straw. But a check valve is good for servicing, so you don’t have to prime the pump every time you clean the filter. And with self priming pumps, it can still save time bleeding the system.

John Anderson there’s roughly 5 to 6 degrees on each side of each stave cut from 2x6” material, about 33 staves for a 5’D and 40 (I believe) for a 6’D. I would recommend doing the math yourself though, or getting someone to do it for you. Or you can buy a barrel kit, like I do.

No we didn’t, and generally don’t. The built cedar oil does a lot. Sometimes a tongue oil, or linseed though, if customer demands. It’s hard to work around the bands, and keep it looking good over the years that way though, because cedar is so soft and takes the oil in with inconsistent/patchy looking results.

Why doesn't the water leak out between the boards?
@SullivanWaterworksOakland7 жыл бұрын
It actually does leak a bit at first, then the wood swells and seals itself. It's the same method used for old water towers, wine barrels, etc.. The wood is kiln dried and when filled with water, can swell up to 5%
@SullivanWaterworksOakland7 жыл бұрын
Also, the wood is precision cut so that it doesn't leak so much that it won't hold water. You need it to hold enough water in order for it to swell and seal the leaks. It can be a nightmare if you do it wrong, leave gaps, etc..
@firecloud777 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I've often wondered how the heck wine barrels and wooden water towers don't leak but I never bothered to investigate it.
@Vikinatorn7 жыл бұрын
If you've ever handled a dry, older wine barrel you'd know it leaks, and it leaks for days. You would submerse it in a bath of water beforehand to saturate the wood, and this can take a long time.
