Western sanctions hit Russian aviation sector | DW News

Russian airlines are still flying despite massive international sanctions imposed on the aviation sector, but their collapse seems imminent. Or have they found a workaround?
There are not a few aviation experts who are surprised that Russia's commercial airlines are still taking to the skies despite a range of biting international sanctions targeting the country's aviation sector.
Not long after the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Western countries barred their airspace to Russia's airlines; foreign airlines cut their commercial ties to them, and plane makers such as Boeing and Airbus stopped delivering crucial spare parts to Russia. According to those experts, it wouldn't take more than two weeks before commercial aviation in Russia collapsed.
Nine months into the war, however, reports about Russian aviation's imminent death are proving to be premature. Flight services for Russian passengers operate seemingly uninterrupted, at least on domestic routes. How can that be?

it would have been good to mention that all of those western-made planes russia stole are supposed to undergo standardised regular inspections and maintenance and keep a record of it, and by now they have lost pretty much all their potential resale value and their chances to be recognised as airworthy in highly regulated countries, because they have been flying without keeping the proper maintenance record to document their condition.

sure they built a stockpile before, knowing that they want to start a war, plus half of the fleet is not flying due to loss of routes, so they have more to take from. Let's say they can keep up domestic flights for 2-3yrs. But then, they'll have to buy Chinese planes with Russian or Chinese engines , as the West will not deal with them for some time. Plus I doubt they get their Western routes back, before settling somehow with the leasing companies and all others involved.

they completely shunned the question who underwrites such planes flying domestically in the RF. clearly, this cannot be a European or American agency. in case of a crash there is probably only a Russian underwriter/insurance covering a fraction of what is the international standard. The question when such a plane (airbus or boeing in RF) becomes inoperable due to a lack in software updates has not been addressed either.
