Great video, Brent! One small question.....in a pinch, could the 10W-30 JD Turf Gard oil be used in an automobile in a pinch when I am a half quart down and don't have any auto oil around?

Yes it could. Mixing oils is not recommended but it would get you by. Thanks for watching!

I got a question if its thicker at operating temp why is it so thin when I drain it out at operating temp and thick when it cold? Asking for a friend:)
@WesternEquipment3 жыл бұрын
I should have worded this better. It is not necessarily the actual thickness or viscosity of the oil, it is more about how the certain additives make the oil perform at different temperatures when in use. I hope this makes sense and thanks for watching!

@jakek67283 жыл бұрын
I've talked to multiple engineers that do the testing for oil viscosity and I've heard some say weight and some winter. I believe this will never be settled. Also as a engineer myself, the school curriculum contradicted itself and litterally had both as the correct answer in separate chapters
@WesternEquipment3 жыл бұрын
This is interesting. I know I have been questioned on this multiple times so it is good to hear some new perspective on the topic. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!
@FishFind30002 жыл бұрын
hell you can just say its "winter weight" now you cant be wrong since you have both!
@sammy9860 Жыл бұрын
Okay can someone explain this to me? So, a higher number means a higher viscosity, so how is the winter rating lower than the operating temp rating, because as the temperature increases, viscosity goes down, that’s the one thing I’m not managing to wrap my head around
@WesternEquipment Жыл бұрын
It all has to do with the additives in the oil and the way to additives affect the chemical composition of the oil. The different additives affect the way the oil reacts in the different temperatures.

I have an engine that comes from a Ford Expedition 2003 5.4 L and the engine cap it says to use 5w 20. should I continue to use engine oil that my car is meant for or should I change it for the area that I live in?
@michaelruiz72275 жыл бұрын
Adjust to your area. You dont want tappets or knocking to start its too expensive
@josephtennyson43485 жыл бұрын
@@michaelruiz7227 okay well how about this a mechanic changed the motor from a 4.6 L to the 5.4 L the same 5.4 L motor came from a motor of the same type of vehicle I have. that is what the used auto part store said. would that matter for the engine oil? that since the motor was changed. the motor cap from the previous one said 5w 20. no engine cap was found on the 5.4 L

So i put 5w 30 synthetic for cars in my 1025r tractor. And it blow out black smoke. I might have put 3 quarts of oil in. There was no dip stick to check it. So the tractor started up and blow black smoke and wouldnt turn off. It finally stopped after 5-8 minutes. So did the engine get ruined?

Usually just a temperature thing. Straight weight oil is intended to be used in ideal conditions where multi grade oil is engineered to adapt better to colder temperatures.

Then what does 0 mean in o w 20
@WesternEquipment5 жыл бұрын
It means it has a lower viscosity than 5W 10W and so on at 0 degrees Celsius or 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Someone correct me if I’m wrong but I haven’t heard of anything less than a 0W. So for starting cold weather engines the oil will be thinner when staring the engine but then when reaching operating temperature the second number 20 will be the thickness of the oil then.
