Bravissima ! I also take care of my westie, like this... but I didn't know about the nail filer, and I thank you for showing it to me. I immediately buy it because the spur often gets too long, even between one toilet and another. A thousand thanks !! kisses (also to Sami, especially to Sami, who is nice and patient!) bye Allegra

Awwww….Sami does look like a cute, little teddy bear. You did a great job, and Sami is so well-behaved!🥰 From my days as a nurse, I have medical scissors that have a flat end with a rounded guard if anyone doesn’t feel comfortable trimming around their Westie’s eyes. I’ve used it on Sophie between a grooming. I’m definitely going to have to get the nail file…didn’t even know those were available, as no pet store here in the US sales anything but nail clippers, which are scary to use, plus, sharp edges are left anyway. 😱 You truly are a wonderful mommy to Sami, and it shows from the mutual trust and love shown between y’all!😍 One of the reasons I love watching your videos!💕
@WestieVibes2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for your kind words! ❤🥰 The rounded guard sounds like a good idea for scissors, I didn't know those existed. Dog scissors should come with something like this 🙂 Yes, these electric nail grinders are usually not in pet shops, just online. See the link in the description for the one I use, it's really good! 🤗

@@WestieVibes I just looked on Amazon, and they do sell the scissors I mentioned. If you’re interested, or anyone else is, look under “medical scissors.” They sell different sizes. I used mine to cut dressings off of patients back in my nursing days!😊💕

Unfortunately, I waited until my dogs nails needed trimming, or I would have gone slowly in getting him used to the idea. But I got my Westie to tolerate filing by smearing a big plate with peanut butter and while he licked it, I did his back nails, not touching his front nails. Soon we progressed to doing a little filing of all the nails and getting intermittent treats. He’s absolutely fine with it now if I start with back feet first, otherwise, I get a little bit of resistance.

Sami did such a fantastic job of sitting still for you. Duncan (my Westie) will allow me to brush him for hours. I have the same comb as you (larger gaps on one side than the other). Like Sami, he'll go to sleep while I'm doing it. I also groom his private areas (as you say, it's really a must). I do not yet trust myself with the eyes. He is still too much of a wiggle worm... maybe when he turns two. For now, we'll let the professionals take care of that; he gets groomed every 4 - 6 weeks, like Sami. Thank you for sharing this video... I will definitely be purchasing the dog wipes and the nail tool. 😊
@WestieVibes2 жыл бұрын
Ah you are right, puppy Duncan is not to be trusted with the eyes yet 🥰 I think I also started trimming him around the eyes later, when he was already an adult (he is almost 4 now). I am so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you 🧡

Hi. How do you keep Sami’s beard from getting the brown that comes from saliva? Our girl, Razzle is so beautiful, but I am not sure what to do about the brown on the beard. Thanks for your videos. I am a subscriber and enjoy watching you and Sammi. Marian

This is very instructive, thanks a million! Was Sami always so calm? My Westie Trasto is 5 month old and although he’s used to be groomed, he moves much more than Sami
@WestieVibes2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, I'm so so happy to hear this! 😍 No, Sami was very hyperactive when he was a puppy too, but we did a lot of obedience training with him to encourage him to be calm and patient. You can try exercises that get him to focus on you (look at you when he does something like walking), try getting him to sit for a few seconds more each time and then reward... All this helps to make them more calm, but it comes with time and practice. Sami became like this around the age of 2, so don't worry, Trasto is a completely normal puppy 😅

Thanks so much! 💛 Yes, I didn't mention that in the video, I'm lucky that Sami has pink and white nails. Most Westies have them black too, like your dachshund, so it's harder to know when to stop. Do you also use a regular nail file like I used to? 😅 Not easy haha! Yes, look into the nail grinder, see the link in description for the one I have, it shortens the time and it's super practical!

@@uxkatya Oh, there's so much to share there! It's on my list but I keep postponing because it's been a lot and don't know where to start 😅 but I definitely will do it soon. It wasn't easy, the first year I powered through but I had many days when I thought it was all for nothing 🤣🤣 So I feel you. He was so stubborn and distracted I thought sometimes he was doing it on purpose 😂 but I kept up the training and had rules at home, so it all paid off eventually 🥳💪

@@WestieVibes oh, thank you for that! I have a 6 months old westie teen who is questioning my every word in spite of all the training and seeing Sami being such a good boy made me think that I’m a bad dog parent. I’m especially concerned with picking up things on the street as it’s his direct health hazard. So stressful, thank god he is so westie-cute, at least some compensation 😏 love him to death still
@WestieVibes2 жыл бұрын
@@uxkatya Teenagers 🙄😅😅 Honestly, if you knew the times I felt like a bad Westie mom during that teenage period. Looking at Sami now you couldn't tell, but he was like that too. The trick is to not let him "win" :)) Always be more stubborn than him. It's work, but it will be worth it. About picking things up, you just need to keep an eye on him all the time and when he does it, take out whatever he has in his mouth and say "leave it" (this command is always useful to teach with toys at home too). He will still do it, but if you always catch him and say leave it, he will at least know it's wrong. Sami used to stop on walks and look up at me innocently (mouth closed). Whenever he did this, I knew he had his mouth full of some gross thing he picked up on the street and I would open his mouth and take it all out 🤣 (one time he had a huge beef bone). It was his tell. He knew it was wrong picking things and he would still do it, but look up to me for permission. It was very cute 😅

Hi, I’m glad I found you, new subscriber here. I enjoyed watching how you groom Sami - he’s soooo cute! I have a Westie too. I groom him myself as he doesn’t like to go to the groomers. He’s quite good and lets me groom him all over, the nails can be a challenge 😂 I use the nail file too but it takes so long! I’ve never taken my Westie to be hand stripped as I can’t find anyone near me that offers that service, so he looks fluffy like a sheep most of the time. Can you tell me does the hand stripping remove the fluffy under coat? If so, wouldn’t the dog need that for winter weather? I’m off to watch your other videos now 😊
