Hes bringing boom bap to a larger audience by inserting serious trap beats with authentic trap artists mixed in with underground rappers. Shit is beautiful, im shocked so many fans arent getting it. But who cares about them, gunns the man, the art is growing. Hip hop is in a great place and the boom bap sub genre is living!!! Edit* 18 albums.

What’s blowing me about this interview is the fact that West thinks some people don’t like the album just cuz it’s not a “boom bap” or “golden era” sounding LP…. No…. West could be talking about any and everything… I don’t care if he switched to a southern style on some records or trap/drill type vibe… Or if some records are more upbeat… whatever that’s fine, ima real hip hop head so I love ALL types of styles BUT at the end of the day the records have to be GOOD.. whether a boom bap record or a turn up record… and frankly, I feel like half the tracks on this album are TRASH… And I’m blown because I’m a big Westside fan… I got off work, rolled my L, took a shot of brown, hopped in the car with my dogs and took a peaceful ride. And turned on this new west side album knowing it was just getting ready to be straight FIRE 🔥 🔥 🔥 and by the time I was done listening, I was disappointed like hell. It sounds rushed and like he barely even tried on some records… idk he’s put out so much fire so I can’t be mad.. every rapper has at least one super wack album… it’s almost inevitable… even some of the GOATS Im glad West is getting money and living life but in terms of turn up records, they just don’t sound good and the slow, offbeat, monotone flow doesn’t suite him well 🤷🏾‍♂️

idk if fantano is just meatriding or smthn but the point isnt that its bad that westside gunn is trying trap. westside gunn can do whatever tf he wants. its just that a lot of people think it sounds like shit and thats okay

Westside's charisma really on a whole nother level for me. No other rapper can rap like him unless they have that level of confidence. Kmwing Westside as an artist he will only get better with this new sound, so I'm excited for the future records coming

The problem isn’t trap beats. I was actually excited to hear a new sound, the boom bap sound has gone on wayyy to long and he has basically mastered it with hitler 8 and 10. Sounds like he’s going after that early 2010s trap sound but i think it could be done better. Lil ugly mane/SGP went back to the Memphis sound and did it very well, ASAP was really trying to bring out that screw tape sound on his first mixtape and did it well. This is an example of the same scenario with a different era that just didn’t get executed as well. I personally think he needs to lean on that LOST FOREVER sound off UTOPIA🔥🔥still boom bap but elevated. Westside is still the shit, this might be his first miss and he’s dropped 20 projects lol. Also shout out western NY!! ROC loves Griselda🙏🏼🙏🏼

i don't think the majority of fans hate him now that he didn't make a fully boom bap project, i think they mean the trap sections of the album are actually bad, from the beats to the verses where you can clearly hear Gunn struggling with his flow... just don't use the excuse of people not getting what you create, we are getting it, and it's subpar content... that's not called hating, it's called having an opinion, if the trap songs were actually good there wouldn't be this many negative comments on them... i myself appreaciate him wanting to expand and experiment over other musicalities but trap is really not for him, for now of course, there's always room for improvement

Long time West & Griselda fan, been talking to a lot of people about &TYPFM since it dropped and I'm really not sure why he's chosen it to be the sequel to PFP. Its got a totally different vibe going on, hes switched out the heavenly orchestral sounds for trap beats, and thats okay if he wants to experiment, but I dont get why hes not just released it as a seperate project? Kitchen Lights is exactly the sort of song I did expect on the album, and while I've not had long with it yet I think it could easily be his greatest ever, I dont get why he didnt keep that energy going like on PFP. I know a lot of the hardcores are disappointed by this album, especially the production, West IMO isnt at his best over trap style beats, but had the beats at least been *good* trap beats it could still have been far better. Even if this had been a mixtape or a new album series I'd have probably been happy enough getting new music from West and picking out the 4/5 songs I do like out of it, but with it being the follow-up to PFP it feels like the vision from the original got lost in the shuffle somewhere. I also think some of the features didn't bring much to the album, Giggs especially on Disgusting, which as a guy who grew up on UK grime was really disappointing. It feels like a very rare dip in form for him and I'm hoping we get a surprise 8 song B side before the end of the year that brings more of the PFP sound. Still better than Drakes album though and it should win AOTY off the fact Kitchen Lights *is* the best song released this year.

@HappyBob701 I saw West get in the Trap bag more, but I assumed he'd carry that on after &TYPFM. Feels like we've been robbed of the true PFP sequel we all expected. Its a shame too, KITCHEN LIGHTS is amazing and I think he was absolutely on the money, but then he completely abandoned it. The production feels like it would have worked far better on a Benny album and I can't help but wonder why he didn't just set Benny off to kill those beats instead of trying to force his flow onto beats that are well outside of his wheel-house. That said its growing on me a little each listen, I'm not as disappointed as I was the first day. AOTY looks well out the picture though and it should have been an easy win after a mild year of releases
