WET CRAWL SPACE FAQ: Why not just stop water outside the home, before it enters the crawl space?

As you already may have already wondered, I get asked nearly every single day of the week,
''Tanner, why don't you just stop the water on the outside of the home, and prevent it from entering inside the crawl space altogether?''
That's a pretty logical question. And any logical person, would logically think, that would be a pretty easy task to accomplish!
But what I am here to tell you, is that water does not think logically! And just like you have been hearing me say inside all of these wet crawl space videos I have been making for all these years, nearly every single inside perimeter crawl space french drain job, already has an outside drain system in place, before tennessee technicians ever thought about showing up to the jobsite!
Today, while inspecting this wet crawlspace for my buddy Brian, I finally got a good opportunity to show you guys some great examples of all these things I have been attempting to educate you on for all these years!
So come along with me on today's crawl space consultation, as we look at how to fix this standing water issue, and get rid of all this problematic humidity, that's causing all of these moisture problems, underneath this brand new house, that is not even finished being built yet!
Of course, in the long run, once we get control of the water inside the crawl space, we will send it all outside via our sump pump, and sump basin, and then we can begin our world famous crawl space encapsulation work, with our santa fe crawl space dehumidifier. Actually, crawl space dehumidifiers. I intend to use two compact units on this project.
I hope this wet crawl space faq video was educational for you. I hope you were able to take something away from it, that prevents you from wasting money with some local business contractor, who only claims to know about how to fix moisture problems inside a crawl space.

Hi Tanner, my husband is following your videos and installing a French drain in our crawlspace now…thank you so much for your videos! My question is does he need to put one on the outside too like this house? I think he means to anyway so that our gutters can drain somewhere away from the house, but is it necessary that every house have both an inside and outside French drain system?

Not necessarily. Most new constructions have outside perimeter drains in place.

Aah, the power of subsurface water flow and fluid dynamics.... water just wants to be level. Poor guy made a swimming pool that fills up from the bottom. If only we could waterproof continuously from below the foundations all the way up to the finished ground line.

Why is it that code still allows the pipe and gravel to be on top of the footing. I was always taught to install the drain tile system away from the footing and lower than the footing to eliminate this problem I’ve been building houses for 20 years and I’ve never had a wet basement yet

There are no gutters or downspouts. Every drop of water that falls on that roof is running off and landing in that trench along the foundation. Of course it’s going to end up under the house.
