Thank you so much . Great video , loved your choice of music . Live in Rochester , NY ...... Where George Eastman was an American entrepreneur who founded the Eastman Kodak Company . Never knew about the basic process of photography and developing images . I was looking at pictures of Wyatt Earp, tinplate images. And needed to know , How Is That Done ?? Thanks again .

Nice informative video! I work with Tin Types and I have a lot of fun with the process. Just an FYI...there are several videos on You Tube explaining how to mix the chemicals. All the chemicals can be purchased on E bay. The silver nitrate tank can be made for several different sizes. I made my tank for 8X10 although I'm using a 5X7 view camera.

What's the ISO of the collodian, is it standard across different brands of chemicals? What aperture were you using and how much bellows extension factor did add?

So what exactly do I have to buy exept for the camera, lens plate, holder, dark room & black aluminum plate? The chemicals used are a bit unclear to me exept for collodium and water. Thanks for the instruction. And is it true that the tintype has a asa / din of ≈1 or a bit less?

Hello I am a subscriber to South Korea. There is no information about collodion wet plate in South Korea. So I want to ask you some questions. I am using a poeboy collodion (Cadmium bromide is not available in South Korea ) The picture is still blurry or the contrast is poor. I'm not sure if it's a silver nitrate issue or a developer issue. Collodion was definitely well made. The developer made it well by adding iron sulfate, acetic acid and ethanol. But the picture is blurry. I am doing an ambro type. Is it a problem with silver nitrate? Specific gravity is exactly 1.07. If the pH of silver nitrate is about 5~6, can the picture be blurry or the contrast is weak?

thanks for the tutorial sir ! but, can i use large format camera like chamonix 4x5 , deardroff 8x10 (or any other brands) , or this has to be special large format camera for wet plate collodion ? (same question for the lens too) thank you.
@DieterSchneider
@DieterSchneider 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks. You can use many types of large format cameras but you must convert the film holder to hold plates. Alex Timmermans has a great video on how to do this. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJ3FaHeIpLiGjKs You can use any lens that cover the size you want.
@rick_eeh
@rick_eeh 7 жыл бұрын
thanks for the response, but about the lens, why do people always use lens like "petzval" or old lenses, not like lenses people use like rodenstock, nikon, fuji or etc ?
@DieterSchneider
@DieterSchneider 7 жыл бұрын
Petzval gives that "swirly" bokeh on portraits. Many wet plate photographers like that look, but you can use any lens that cover the plate size. Keep in mind that many sellers (on Ebay etc.) say they sell Petzval lenses, but often that's not the case. Check out this article: dieter.me/wet-plate-collodion-a-guide-to-tintypes-and-ambrotypes/

Question I'm just getting into this kind of photography I've been sensitising in a Tupperware tub in safelight but my collodion goes white while doing this is this normal as I can't really see in the video
@DieterSchneider
@DieterSchneider 7 жыл бұрын
That's normal. However, it's a good ida to do the sensitising in a dark box (even though the red light probably won't affect your plate).

I have good experience with www.mamut-photo.com (Europe) and www.bostick-sullivan.com/ is also a good source but I don't know if they ship outside the US. Lund Photographics should also be ok www.lundphotographics.com There are probably a few more but these are the ones I'm familiar with.

Yakir Yahish I like the Old WorkHorse Collodion and usually make my own developer. A great way to start is to buy a kit. This would work fine: www.mamut-photo.com/eshop/en/collodion-sets/60-collodion-chemistry-set-2.html

I love this and would like to do photography using plate however is it safe to wash this away in a normal sink ie it will go into the water drains.
@DieterSchneider
@DieterSchneider 7 жыл бұрын
I would definitely stay away from the dish you use for food items etc. Connect a hose to your tap and make some sort of plastict sink etc. The best is if you can do it outside using a primitive darkbox, in a shed etc.
@_H_2023
@_H_2023 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the reply and keeping away from house hold items yes.But once the photo plate is cleaned can I put the water solution down the drain,is that a safe way to get rid of it or do you have to dispose of it another way?
@DieterSchneider
@DieterSchneider 7 жыл бұрын
I would not be concerned about pouring the solution down the drain. There are many household chemicals that are worse. There might be rules and regulations in your country/area, but for private use I don't think that will ever be a problem.

I know this vid is a year old but how do you choose a camera and lens. I understand that getting the hang of the chemicals and technic is practice.
@DieterSchneider
@DieterSchneider 8 жыл бұрын
You need a camera with a plate holder. The camera must be the size of your plate. The lens must cover the size of your plate as well. The bigger plates you want to make the harder and more expensive it is to find cameras and lenses. I build my own cameras but you can find cameras and lenses on Ebay and maybe Etsy. Here are some more information that may help you: dieter.me/wet-plate-collodion-a-guide-to-tintypes-and-ambrotypes/
