Wet Prep: Trichomonas vaginalis

Trichomoniasis, caused by Trichomonas vaginalis, a protozoan parasite, as seen underneath a microscope (40x objective lens) in a wet mount.
A wet prep is a test that involves taking a swab from patient’s vagina and placing it within a tube of normal saline. The specimen is transported to the lab immediately and read underneath a microscope with 40x lens within one hour.
Reading a wet prep involves assessing for the presence of:
(1) Trichomonas vaginalis
(2) Clue cells
(3) Yeast
(4) Optional: sperm (not really important)
In order to call Trichomonas, in our lab we had a policy that you must see movement - otherwise large white blood cells could be mistaken as Trichomonas - which includes the characteristic flagella.
Treatment involves a course of the antibiotic metronidazole.
