Dry rot doesn't just attack wood. One year the scouts came back from camp and stored the slightly damp canvas tents in a small, unventilated room in the church crypt. The boilers were next door and kept the place at a steady 13ç. When they opened up the room several months later dry rot had fetched off a fair bit of lime plaster and was making the sandstone underneath friable. We emptied the room and fetched off the plaster and raked out a lot of the mortar and thoroughly treated and dried the room out. Personally I'd be nervous tanking over it because it cannot be inspected.

It is a wood fungus... Dry rot differs from other types of wood rot because it will spread over and through other damp materials or masonry to the rest of the house far beyond the initial infestation site, whereas wet rot will remain localised to the source of moisture.

Just a heads up you said your going to remove the “skirting board” twice, but it’s actually a floor board 👍🏼

Hi There! Great video! I have some mild dry rot in my back room that has eaten three joists. My question: how much 'surrounding plaster' needs to be removed from where you see the roots and around where the affected wood is that should be treated? Can we also keep wood that is not affected, as long as its effectively treated with the wash? I'm just mindful I don't want to take away more plaster than needed!

Good thorough walk round mate! Going to keep you busy… I was going to ask what’s causing the damp on the exterior wall… then you mentioned it right at the end… I’m stabbing a guess at cement render full of cracks which once that starts happening damp will find it’s way through as you’ve found. Take it easy mate and see you on the next video!

Very informative video, thank you. Question; I would have thought spraying it would be a lot more effective as it would penetrate the porous parts better. You insisted to brush it on. Why?

Prefer a brush you can scrub it in . Thanks

@@PaintingandDecorating Great video, thanks for the short sharp points. i would agree that a brush would scrub it in, but there is nothing wrong with a sprayer though, once all safety precautions are taken though. Question, what is your opinion on using a dehumidifier to get rid of any damp in the room first?

Great video. Do you know if it ever came back or did that product do the trick?

why can't you put it in a spray? I need to spray I can't get anywhere with a brush, I've had some leakage in the roof and the eaves are rotten in places I can't get there, and now today part of the ceilings has collapse and have noticed the problem. what's the best treatment I can use? I know I have woodworm as well have noticed that before. what about treating it with bleach first? what's the best solution that can be sprayed? you say that stuff is toxic, I am living here with a disabled person, I wouldn't be in direct contact I can cover it up with some polythene for the time after spraying, but doesn't sound like it's good to breathe in. what about lignum pro but I think thats a gel not a liquid? I've heard boron supposed to be good, again it's a paint thick gel I don't know if you should water it. any suggestions would be good thanks

That’s not dry rot that’s Coniophora puteana its type of brown rot fungus commonly called also the "cellar" fungus. No need for any of that treatment to the wall.
