The only thing that would've made it better would've been having preserved North Staffordshire Railway locos up and running or on display. We only have one static steam engine and the battery loco, which haven't run in decades.

@LMM, @FoxfieldRailwayOfficial Thank you so much for braving the liquid sunshine and putting this event together! Thank you to all of the staff and volunteers who work to preserve this history. My 2nd cousin 4x removed Geroge James Crosbie Dawson was chief engineer fo the North Staffordshire Railway from 1886-1914. It means a great deal to see some of his work preserved. Work done by the many hands he supervised. Thanks for the great video that helps me to get an idea of the engineering and operation of the line. I'm doing more research in order to do a small model of the NSR during George's time as chief engineer.

On closer inspection, the windows of the "Wagons Lits" coach are painted on. Is that just a GUV painted to look like a passenger coach? On another topic, the round section connecting rods of the wee blue Kerr Stuart look rather dainty compared to the chunky rectangular section connecting rods of the other engines.

Coal bunkers... Lawrie, I'd like an opinion about what is easier to shovel. On a tank locomotive, coal is easier to shovel when it's next to the boiler or behind the cab? John British Columbia, Canada p.s. 26:16 To me, any time in the locomotive or brake van would be considered First Class.
@lmm Жыл бұрын
Depends entirely on what the engine is. A bigger tank engine where you can swing, and you have a bigger box you need to launch it into, behind is better. For this engines that it's just placing coal, there often isn't room to swing the shovel round if it was behind you!
@ewanrollo55626 ай бұрын
Are there any front cab/footplate steam engines out there? You could call it a backwards steam engine. Im just wondering if there's a reason for having the boiler out in front where its blocking the drivers view. They work in both directions. So why not design one where the driver gets a better view of the track ahead if the engine doesn't need a tender that is

She would need a complete, very expensive overhaul to put her in museum condition let alone fully working.. Mallard will be running by the time NSR N° 2 will be considered for overhaul
@bentullett6068 Жыл бұрын
@therailtourer when I visited the Great Gathering someone asked one of the museum staff if Mallard will run again and the person said probably not as it isn't in great condition even though it looks stunning. After its record run it started having many mechanical faults occur which were never repaired properly since then and during the war it got even less attention as it was only maintained to keep it running. Then in the BR era its work started getting reduced when the Deltic diesel was brought out and replaced Mallard and her other A class express services. The North Staffs tank has a better chance at being revived back to life as its a smaller locomotive and in the current future of heritage railways, smaller steam locomotives are more economical to run over the larger express locomotives.
