Adam Savage’s Tested

3 жыл бұрын

When Adam visited Weta Workshop early last year, he stopped by their 3D printing lab to check out their research and experiments in 3D printing full-color eyeballs for exhibition figures and effects work. Weta Workshop's Richard Taylor and 3D artist Tor Robinson show Adam examples of anatomically accurate printed eyeballs that push the limits of high tech fabrication!

Weta struck.. a pipeline where our senior lecturer at the design school funnelled talent toward his friend sir richard taylor... It helps that the design school has one of only two of this type of printer in the country. Sadly the resin is not highly scratch resistant at this time and the support material it prints with is irritant to skin, so while the method of creating eyes is well on the way, the materials will need to catch up for prostheses to be viable

I was gonna write the same. However, didn’t realize her name was Tor - Tor is a male name from Norse mythology (the one you pronounce/spell as “Thor” in English). Never seen a female with that name, it would be the equivalent of a female named “George”. However, there is a female version, “Tora”, which would be the equivalent of “Georgia” for George.

We print these eyes at my work. You should see some of the other capabilities of the J750! You can switch out the clear resin for a flexible resin, if you add different ratios of the CMYK tray materials you can specify exactly how flexible you want the print to be. Google "Hydrophytes" by Nicole Hone, it will blow your mind.
@TorstenLif
@TorstenLif 3 жыл бұрын
@@timberwolf1575 I suspect longer than you think. The reason the FDM-type 3-D printing we mere mortals can afford is not graded as medical, is because there are tiny pores between the bits of material, so bacteria can establish their little nasty colonies there. As I understood it, the droplets used here are still not 100.00% fused solid together. I guess there's some clear-coat sealant involved to make the surface so clear, but a prosthetic eye has to sit in a saline solution and survive millions of blinks, so that coating had better not wear down!

Thank you so much for making this video. Many years ago, I made acrylic eyes with the Madame Tussaud's Studio in London. Technology has come on such a long way. We would have to hand paint the striations to build up depth in many layers. The edge between the sclera and iris was made by quite a lot of grinding down and sanding before the next clear level. I can see 3D printing is the way forward in eye making, not only for accuracy but for the time it takes to make a pair. Great studio work

I was fitted with a glass prosthetic eye over 50 years ago. They need to be replaced every few years but I don't think you'd spot it if we were to meet (if I didn't tell you). But I was "lucky" in that I didn't lose my eye to any kind of accident, so it was removed under ideal conditions. Those who lose theirs through external trauma (traffic accidents etc.) often suffer additional damage to the eye cavity and the surrounding muscles, and that affects both the fit of the prosthesis and the look of that part of the face. That said, I did at one point try one of the plastic alternatives. I found it very unsatisfactory. Dull and not nearly as lifelike as the glass ones. I guess I'm fortunate to live in a country that still offers glass as a matter of course.

I agree that they should sell them in the gift shop. I'd love to see one of the foot-wide ones on my wall.

If these eyes were implemented into the "Scale of our war" exhibit .... That would be utterly incredible! Also I agree with the comments about what an incredible boss/mentor this man seems to be!

I'm glad she picked out the hazel! As someone with hazel eyes I found GREAT appreciation in the details of the color mix that just made them stand out. What fantastic prints! Tor needs to write a couple papers, for sure!

Love how this has possible application outside of FX. Gives a great opportunity for those needing a prosthetic eye to make a nearly identical match to their remaining eye.

I think you'd be surprised at how good the glass prostheses are. I've been using them for 50 years now and can count on my fingers how many have actually spotted them. The people making them are truly amazing.

The special effects companies will be knocking on the door. Robot makers will definitely need these eyes. Cameras could be mounted to the back side. This is just the start. That young lady has a very special skill.
