Texas pastor explains why he wants Gateway Church to tell the truth about Robert Morris' allegations

A former pastor at the Gateway Church in Southlake said he believes past church leaders knew of disgraced founder Robert Morris' alleged sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl and assisted in covering it up.
Stephen LeBlanc, who is now senior pastor of the Sherman Bible Church, said he feels betrayed by Morris and doesn't believe Gateway is taking responsibility for its now-former leader's alleged actions.
Morris resigned from Gateway last month after Cindy Clemishire said he had sexually assaulted her for years, beginning when she was 12 years old in the 1980s.
In a statement Wednesday night, a Gateway spokesperson said: "The sexual abuse of Cindy as a child by Robert Morris is unfathomable."
"The elders are committed to finding the truth and holding people accountable," the spokesperson said. "Regrettably, prior to June 14, the current elders did not have all the facts."
LeBlanc, who said he had known Morris since the late 80s and accepted a job as a pastor at Gateway in 2011, said he had no idea the details of Morris' alleged sexual assault, despite Morris' frequent invocation of his past "immorality."
"It never in a thousand years would’ve crossed my mind to say 'Let me ask you, Robert, what was the age of this person?'" LeBlanc said. "It was always framed as indiscretion with a young lady. And when I hear young lady, I don’t think 12-year-old. I don’t think anybody does."

@@BlestinTexas24 I'm glad he is speaking out in support of Ms Clemishire. The elders at Gateway and Shady Grove Church post 1986-1987 will face a question besides being asked what they knew and when they knew it. They will be asked , what they tried to find out in terms of details if indeed Morris had disclosed to them that he had a moral failing in his past. (his term and not mine) The elders had a right and responsibility to ask hard questions in that situation. Elders have a supervisory role in terms of church affairs and officials. I should note that to the best of my knowledge, none of the elders have been charged with a crime ; and don't have a civil judgement against them in this situation. Gateway is not now defending Robert Morris from a moral standpoint per their second statement on Clemishire's claims of abuse issued on or around June 18, 2024. They have accepted the resignation of Morris as their Pastor., (though he has not been charged with a crime) and apologized to Clemishire for what she endured.

Knowledge from the Bible can also save life. The first Bible writer, Moses, stated: “It is no valueless word for you, but it means your life, and by this word you may lengthen your days.” (Deuteronomy 32:47) Can the Bible really lengthen our days? In what way does it mean our life?

It was one of the things I heard about 8 years ago when I first listened to a Robert Morris message - I stopped listening to him after that. While I give and have given at least 10% to my current church, Morris's compulsion around giving (which clearly contradicts scripture - "...not under compulsion...for God loves a cheerful giver...") was my issue with his preaching.

It seems that Satan infiltrated the church from the start, creating a hierarchical structure that set the perfect stage for this kind of abuse, squelching the work of the Holy Spirit, as well as destroying the priesthood of believers who can preach the gospel, baptize people, pray with them as they receive the gift of tongues, lay hands on the sick to heal them, cast out demons, etc. Why does the church look so different from what Jesus said it would look like? It could be argued that 😢it started seriously with institutionalization of the church.

I want to say something about the personal experience i have had with the man speaking in this video, Pastor LeBlanc. * But first, I'll briefly tell you how we crossed paths... I was on staff and volunteered at Gateway in a few different departments for over a decade. I always worked at the café or within the childrens department on weekends (as well as throughought the week), which worked well for me because I didnt mind missing the weekend sermons. When listening to former Pastor Robert Morris speak, I would get a feeling in my gut that I am familiar with. And so I never got anything out of his sermons. 🙏Then Pastor Stephen LeBlanc came on staff and preached every Tuesday night to a group mostly comprised of 18 to 30 years old. God bless this man. I attented every Tuesday while he was there. He is so passionate about being a vessel for God, and his whole face lights up when he talks about the Lord, and of course his wife and kids. He has a way of bringing scripture to life and when appropriate, he knows how to sprinkle in his sense of humor in certain messages. This is a man of integrity, a kind man, one who really puts aalot of thought and prayer into his decisions, and I wholeheartedly trust him and it it makes me sad to see the hurt in his eyes. I hate that anyone has send any negativity his way, but he did this knowing that would happen. I doubt he will see this, but if my some off chance he does: Pastor LeBlanc, I want to thank you for being the safe space I needed for a time to learn how to grow my relationship deeper with God, and for all the laughs, wisdom, and hope you and your wife provided during yourr brief time there. And thankyou for what you said in this interview. I was SA'd when I was 5-6, and you were correct in saying it alters the trajectory of your life. I have PTSD and still need therapy thirty years later. So THANKYOU for speaking up for all children who arent able to themselves.

One of the worst things to happen in my family was my dad being abused by a “pastor “….leaving a ripple effect to this day through our family. I’m so thankful for this pastor’s understanding of the issues involved and his advocacy for survivors. If he’s exhausted after two weeks of fighting for victim rights in this case, imagine what it’s like for those of us who have gone through this alone in silence with the perpetrator never admitting his crime, the church believing the pastor instead of the victim, and the victim being shunned by the church. Churches often are so concerned about ministering to the perpetrators and their families that they minister so poorly victims and their families. But God has always cherished the oppressed, the victimized, the powerless and the weak. And He sees and hears and knows all. God has begun cleaning out the temple and restoring His Church. Praise Him for that!

I started GW it's opening weekend in Southlake, became a member and attended until 2013. I'm frustrated with myself for having stayed so long as I literally sat in the new church so many times feeling something wasn't right. I would often hear RM tell a story and think to myself, "I wonder if he's making that up." Something was off. I didn't trust the elders who used to walk around and shake our hands. I distanced myself from GW & RM in 2013 and found out how wrong his teaching and theology was. Now? I realize what that "off" feeling was. The church was founded with this lie. I would like my tithe money back, Robert Morris. You know, all the money you guilted us to give even asked us to sign a contract at the beginning of the year what we would tithe, and when I couldn't give a few months, I received a letter reminding me of my contract?

Really appreciate this pastor"s straightforwardness and righteous indignation about the way Gateway has handled this situation so poorly. "integrity is not hard to prove if you have integrity". No lament for this sad situation by church leadership. Thank you, Pastor, for speaking the truth and protecting the innocent, encouraging people to find a church that does not have heroes but a church that has a high view of God which means they have a high view of Scripture. This message is so encouraging to me and I hope to the Body of Christ ❤✝️

Finally, someone that says what needs to be said. Thank you for "speaking the truth in love." It is evident that his perspective is deeply rooted in scripture. And yes, if you know Anyone who has had this happen to them, call the police. Again, call the police, because it is the surest first step in healing. To Not call the police, tells the victim, "It's not really that bad, just deal with it." As long as adults around them hide the assault and don't call it what it is, they are protecting the sin and the sinner, not the victim. Blessings!👏

99% of churches preach the mandatory tithe. I have been a Christian for 42 years and have lived in many places and attended numerous churches and every single one preaches the tithe. I’m not a theologian but I know we are to give according to what is on our hearts and our income. It’s just that simple. Yet I have been shamed shunned and persecuted for this belief and I don’t care because I have peace with the Lord and I am free to give or not to give.

Let me say a few things.... Forgive those who trespass against us. According to the Bible, Jesus says in Matthew 6:14-15 that if you forgive others their sins, God will also forgive you: "If you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses" "For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you" Go ahead folks...cast that stone....im sure youve been perfect ALL YOUR LIFE.

Its not often you hear a Pastor talking about tithing the way this Pastor does. So many Christians are guilted into giving money to church. We are not talking about the mandated 10% here; we mean those envelopes that are collected at every Sunday service. How are they different to the sale of indulgences in the Catholic Church in middle ages? We all know what all that led to in the history of the church.
