Not really mentioned, but I guess it was part of Perestroika, was Glasnost - transparency, openness. Part of that was freedom of speech, although not 100%, but it allowed people to have a discussion and to make criticism against their government. Amazing to see all of these people feeling the freedom of just being able to speak their minds for a change. 50:44 The guy at the end really hammered it home. Interesting that this documentary doesn't even mention it. But the people being interviewed say it.

Facts. “Glasnost” IS a major part of the whole “Perestroika” story. That’s why strikes happened and also allowed “the biggest strike since the Soviet Union was formed” of state factory workers.
